2000 lexus gs 300/400 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. It will cruise all day at speeds that are not at all socially acceptable. It is an extremely stable car in fast, sweeping turns that instills confidence in the driver. Quality is excellent. The gs looks like no other lexus. Whether parked or whipping down the road, this car silences critics who say lexus cars have no soul. lineuptwo models are available: gs 300 37,605); gs 400 46,005).  gs 300 shares its high-output 220-horsepower 3. 0-liter inline-6 with the lexus sc 300 coupe. The wickedly fun gs 400 comes with a 4. 0-liter double overhead-cam v8 that produces 300 horsepower. From the side, it presents a dramatically sloping nose with a cab-forward placement of the lower edge of the windshield. A thin, graceful roofline arches back to a stubby rear deck. A chrome strip surrounds the side windows and accents the shape of the glass. This strikes an interesting contrast with the flat black window posts. For engineering reasons, the rear side glass is divided into a third window, which breaks up an otherwise graceful sweep of glass.  unique football-shaped headlights sweep up and back into the fender. Large multi-lens taillights wrap around to the sides, making a strong design statement from the rear. Small, separate brake lights adorn the rear. The bottom of the rear fascia has a gentle race car-like curl between the twin tailpipes for improved aerodynamics. An optional rear spoiler heightens the car's appearance as a high-performance sedan. Five-spoke aluminum wheels that say this car means business. Some critics have charged that lexus cars, though nearly flawless, are lacking in character. Clearly, this is not the case with the gs series. interiorlots of leather, thick carpeting and tasteful design provide a pleasant environment inside the gs 400. It manages to feel roomy and cozy at the same time. The gs 400 instrument panel and dashboard is a refreshing departure from other designs from japan. Turn on the ignition and a black panel illuminates to reveal gauges with black markings on white faces lighted from the rear. The intensity of the backlighting automatically varies with ambient light. The gauges are a handsome, creative design and are easy to read.  audio and climate controls are logically laid out and easy to use with separate heating and cooling controls for driver and passenger. A hydrocarbon air pollution sensor automatically switches to the recirculation mode when contamination is detected.  an optional navigation system fills the center of the dash, moving stereo and climate controls to the top and bottom of an information screen. The navigation system package 7,065) is an expensive, but comprehensive set of options that includes the aforementioned premium package, leather trim package, and adds the lexus navigation system, heated front seats, heated mirrors and the excellent high-intensity discharge headlamps.  opening and closing power windows and moonroof are a one-touch operation. A sensor stops the window or moonroof and warns the driver when anything -- such as the head of a child or pet -- is blocking its path. The supplied keyless remote can be used to operate the windows and moonroof automatically, depending on the season. A hidden electric garage door opener can be programmed for nearly all frequencies.  the view out the front of the gs 400 is excellent, but the rear view is restricted somewhat by the rear headrests and wide c-pillars. Lexus gs models come standard with seat-mounted side-impact air bags.  the trunk lid raises a full 90 degrees and the lift-over height is low for easier loading and unloading. At 14. 8 cubic feet, the cargo capacity is comparable to other cars this size. driving impressionthe gs 400 can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 6 seconds, putting it in a league with some of the world's best sports cars and sports sedans. Variable valve timing allows the engine to deliver strong torque at low engine speeds, while providing healthy horsepower at higher speeds -- often mutually exclusive benefits. The engine produces 300 horsepower and 310 foot-pounds of torque. Most of that torque (80 percent) is available at just 1800 rpm, giving the gs 400 lots of around town cruising power and allowing it to sprint away from intersections. In spite of its impressive acceleration performance, the gs 400 nets an epa-rated 24 mpg on the highway.  lexus gs 300 uses a 3. 0-liter, 220-horsepower inline 6-cylinder engine. It can make the run to 60 mph in a quick 7. 6 seconds, which is quicker than the e320. Yet the gs 300 boasts a 25-mpg epa highway rating. Its top speed is electronically governed at 144 mph, while the gs 400 is governed at 149 mph. The gs 300 doesn't have all the features of the gs 400 and it certainly isn't as fast, but its price is $8,400 less.  all lexus gs sedans come with a five-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with a console shifter. The transmission is designed to be shifted manually as well. The top half of the shift gate has the familiar prnd markings. To the left of drive is m for manual. Pulling the shifter toward the left permits manually downshifting and upshifting using the shift lever. This can also be accomplished by using the formula 1 racing-inspired buttons on the front and back of the steering wheel. Pushing the button on the front of the steering wheel downshifts one gear. Pushing the button behind the wheel upshifts one gear. A readout at the bottom of the speedometer displays the selected gear. Electronics prevent downshifting above the engine's redline.  like all true high-performance cars, the lexus gs is rear-wheel drive. With all that horsepower, right-foot gratification is instantaneous and substantial. In fact, drivers inexperienced with high horsepower ratings may find themselves intimidated the first few times they apply full throttle. The gs 400 practically leaps off the road when given full throttle. There is plenty of engine noise, but it is a high-tech mechanical sound rather than the angry noise of a corvette's v8. However, the force pushing the driver back into the seat is very corvette like.  under normal driving conditions, however, the gs 400 is a perfect gentleman. It is sedate and effortless with just the right amount of steering effort to instill a firm feeling of control often missing in luxury cars. The ride quality more like a bmw than a cadillac - firm, but not harsh. The suspension absorbs road variations, while providing reassurance in tight turns and fast sweepers.  stellar acceleration performance is backed up by big high-performance brakes. The gs 400 stops quickly and without drama. Anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic traction control and vehicle skid control (vsc) are standard. New for 2000 is the brake assist system, which comes standard. Brake assist interprets a quick push of the brake pedal as emergency braking and, if the driver has not stepped hard enough on the brake pedal, the system supplements the applied braking power. It's an excellent safety feature as many of us do not always full use the potential stopping power in an emergency situation. Vsc can be switched off using the console mounted button.  handling is excellent on winding roads. The all-new lexus gs 400 delivers awe-inspiring performance and a head-turning exterior design. 2003 nissan xterra review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Supercharged performance and so much cool. introductionnissan xterra is cool. It's cool to have a mountain-bike rack inside the cargo bay. It's cool to be rugged. It's cool to be retro and a trendsetter at the same time. And it's especially cool to be supercharged.  there's even more cool for 2003. The naturally aspirated (non-supercharged) v6 is stronger this year. Electronic brake distribution (ebd) is now standard. Traction control, skid control, and a tire-pressure monitoring system are now available. Eye-catching new colors are available, including atomic orange and camouflage.  with its unusual blend of style and function, xterra has been a huge success ever since nissan launched this compact sport-utility in 2000. Xterra has prevailed beyond nissan's expectations and hopes. It's still cool.  . lineupnissan xterra comes in two trim levels: xe and se. Standard equipment includes a tubular roof rack with removable gear basket, air conditioning, a 100-watt audio system with a cd player, anti-lock brakes and a full-size spare tire.  xe v6 20,399) comes with a 3. 3-liter, single overhead-cam v6 that now produces 180 horsepower (10 more than last year) and 202 pounds-feet of torque. For 2003, xe v6 also comes with 16-inch alloy wheels, tubular step rails, and a driver's seat that adjusts for height and lumbar support. A five-speed manual transmission is standard on the v6 xe. Also included are upgraded seats; fog lamps; cruise control; first aid kit; leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls; power windows, locks and mirrors; variable intermittent wipers; tilt steering wheel; remote keyless entry and, coolest of all, a 300-watt rockford fosgate eight-speaker audio system with subwoofer and in-dash 6-cd changer.  a supercharged v6 engine that produces 210 horsepower and 246 pound-feet of torque is available with se trim only. A new rugged leather package 999) for se models includes leather seats and suede-like fabric inserts for the inner doors. A pop-up sunroof with sunshade 349) is available on se models. New for 2003 is the dynamic control package 549), which includes traction and skid control functions, plus a tire-pressure monitoring system. Skull protection is cool.  . walkaroundnissan xterra boasts rugged, distinctive styling. It doesn't look like a girly girl suv, though that doesn't mean women won't find it appealing. Men and women find it appealing. Its front end received a major facelift last year (2002), including round headlights (in place of square square ones), a new front fascia that gives it a more muscular look, and a raised hood with a power bulge.  the rugged aura is carried through with a thick tubular aluminum roof rack terminating in a black airfoil. Step rails match the roof rack, and stout fender flares frame handsome alloy wheels. The beefy grille and front bumper house big radiator vents and recessed halogen fog lights. Vertical handles on the trailing edge of the rear doors add to xterra's functional appearance, though functionally they're not the best. The two-tiered roof and a tall, square back add to the rugged, utilitarian look. A bulge in the tailgate contains a first aid kit. Nissan says the pathfinder is similar, and nobody ever complained. The instrument cluster features a three-pod cockpit motif. Xe gets gray gauges while se's are bluish. A big new console is outfitted with map pocket, power ports and push-out cup holders. The glove box grew by 25 percent, and heating, ventilation and air-conditioning controls were revised.  the long-criticized, dash-mounted, pull-and-twist parking brake was replaced with a foot-operated pedal. This is a big improvement, though we'd prefer a proper hand-brake lever. The manual shift lever is on the tall size.  the front bucket seats are comfortable and supportive. They fit well and provide good lumbar support. A cd changer holds six cds, which can be selected with the six radio station buttons. Three big retro-looking rotary knobs with wings control the heater. Auxiliary dc outlets are provided front and rear, in addition to the cigarette lighter.  se models have cruise control and radio controls located on the leather-wrapped steering wheel, with wide spokes positioned at 3, 9, 5 and 7 o'clock. The whole padded center is the horn, the best and safest operation because of quick access. The horn is tinny but strong, a no-frills statement.  we took the xterra windsurfing, and were wishing for the accessory seat covers made of wetsuit material. Other nice available cabin details include the side window demisters and rear heat ducts, smart storage crannies, as many as 10 cargo hooks on floor and ceiling, and a strap on the tailgate to close it from the inside.  rear seating is not the most comfortable. There's not much side support. Rear passengers can slide their feet under the front seats, but it's a little tight, an inch less than in the smaller toyota rav4. There's lots of headroom, though. The roof is raised over the rear seats to allow them to be positioned higher than the front seats, providing a theater view through the windshield.  because the xterra is built on the frontier pickup truck platform, nissan engineers must have been challenged to squeeze everything in, while providing lots of good cargo space (65. 6 cubic feet with the seats folded down, 44. 5 cubic feet with the seats up).  the 50-50 rear seatbacks fold down fairly flat, but the seat bottoms must be removed. Nissan has also added metal ceiling tie-down clips in the cargo area.  . driving impressionnissan xterra feels tight, smooth, and refined, in a utilitarian sort of way. Thanks to high-tech sound insulation in places not normally insulated, the xterra is quiet at freeway speeds. And the luggage rack hisses in the wind.  xterra sways with gusts and leans in curves, not surprising given its height and boxy shape. That big vertical rear window provides excellent visibility, but it gathers dust and dirt like crazy; fortunately, a rear wiper/washer is now standard on all xterra models.  xterra is nimble at slower speeds, feeling lighter than its 4046 pounds. The steering is very nice. The suspension does a great job on washboard gravel roads. Power steering is by recirculating ball. The body rides on the backs of 10 individually tuned dual-rate rubber chassis mounts, so there's no harshness there at all. The xterra rides much better than the frontier pickup, while sharing the frontier's strong ladder-type frame.  the naturally aspirated, 180-horsepower 3. 3-liter v6 is challenged to smartly drag the 4wd xterra's body weight of 4046 pounds. Stand on it, and the v6 roa.

2003 mercury mountaineer review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Refined, convenient and comfortable. introductionmercury mountaineer presents a bold, expressive design. Its innovative chassis and suspension offer a smooth ride. Completely re-engineered for 2002, mountaineer boasts a new frame, a new independent rear suspension, a new front suspension, new steering, new seating formats, and a raft of new standard and optional features.  mechanically, the mountaineer shares its structure and most of its major components with the ford explorer. It's the mountaineer's adventurous, architectural look that sets it apart. While the explorer almost seems designed to blend into the suburban wallpaper, the mountaineer demands more attention. The premier package now includes a power moonroof and safety canopy airbags. Each is available with a 4. 0-liter v6 or a 4. 6-liter v8 800).  all mountaineers come with a wide-ratio five-speed automatic transmission. All have seating for seven, using a third seat that folds completely flat to make room at the rear for large cargo.  all mountaineers are built to a relatively high specification, with power windows, mirrors and locks, anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution, and a class ii receiver hitch for towing. All have the securilock passive anti-theft system and remote keyless entry, and approach lamps on the bottoms of the side mirrors that illuminate the sides of the vehicle when the key fob button is pressed. Power adjustable pedals are now standard as well. A standard battery saver turns off the dome light and approach lamps after five minutes. P245/70 tires are mounted on 16-inch machined aluminum wheels.  the luxury preferred equipment package 2670) adds leather upholstery, heated front seats, power for the passenger seat, memory for the driver's seat and pedals a message center, dual automatic temperature control, audiophile stereo with a six-cd changer, steering-wheel mounted climate and audio controls, electrochromic heated mirrors, painted running boards and 245/65r17 all-terrain tires.  the premier package 4570) includes all that, plus a monochromatic exterior with satin aluminum trim, safety canopy air bags, a reverse-sensing system and a power moonroof. The moonroof is available as a stand-alone option 800).  the rear seat entertainment system 1100) is a new option for 2003 that includes an overhead dvd player and a pull-down seven-inch color screen. The system comes with two wireless headphones, remote control and a universal jack.  . walkaroundmercury mountaineer's expressive design is refreshing in a sea of comparatively faceless suvs. The exterior graphics are all straightforward, businesslike block letters. That the mountaineer is attractive is a good thing because it is expected to represent the design direction mercury is taking with its future products.  we especially liked the big over-or-under door handles than can be operated easily with gloved hands. Optional running boards are convenient for passengers of small stature trying to enter and exit gracefully.  . interiormountaineer uses trendy matte-aluminum trim on the door panels, steering wheel, instrument panel and dashboard and it looks terrific. The aluminum trim extends to the main gauges, the tachometer and speedometer, which are done in black-on-white graphics that turn orange-and-white when the lights are on. It takes only a couple of rides to be able to find everything quickly and easily. Optional seat heaters warm the seats quickly, but the buttons are mounted on the side of the seat and can be difficult to find, as they are grouped with the seatback recliner handle, the power seat switch for fore/aft and the lumbar pump switch.  third-row seats are a bit cramped for 6-foot, 4-inch testers, but the second row is accommodating.  the second and third row seats are very easy to stow. Folding them away reveals a huge 81 cubic-foot cargo bay. The seats are easy to restore to their upright and locked positions.  . driving impressionthe 2003 mercury mountaineer hovers near the top of the class of mid-size suvs. It works well with the five-speed automatic transmission to move this 4500-pound machine effortlessly over flat territory. Throttle response lacks some verve in hilly terrain. The 4. 0-liter v6 with overhead cams and aluminum heads was revised last year with a new intake system for increased performance and aluminum main bearings for improved durability. It is rated at 210 horsepower and 254 pounds-feet of torque at 3700 rpm.  a sophisticated all-wheel-drive system is available with either engine and differentiates the mountaineer with the ford explorer. All-wheel drive contributes to the mountaineer's handling characteristics because it sends torque to the front and rear tires during normal operation. The mountaineer's system biases torque 35 percent to the front and 65 percent to the rear to minimize understeer. (understeer is when the front tires slip before the rear tires, causing the vehicle to push toward the outside of a turn.) it relies on an open differential with a viscous coupling. A clutch pack distributes power between the front and rear wheels based on traction needs. There are no switches or levers the driver needs to operate. There's no low range for serious off-road driving, but the mountaineer's system easily handles snow, rain, mud, wet leaves, ice, and gravel.  mountaineer's rigid frame lets its fully independent suspension soak up bumps, potholes and tar strips. As a bonus, the independent rear suspension makes room for a bigger, flatter load floor and the third seat.  body roll, or lean, is controlled well in fast corners. It's very stable and inspires confidence. Mountaineer's rack-and-pinion steering minimizes wandering on the highway.  . summarymercury mountaineer combines convenience and versatility with luxurious accommodations. It's comfortable on long trips. Its features and ergonomics make living with it a very pleasant experience. Its available all-wheel-drive system makes it a confident vehicle in nasty weather. The v6 engine is more than adequate for most families, but the v8 gives it more power for hilly terrain, high altitudes, and towing. model lineup2wd 29,235); awd 31,265). assembled inlouisville, kentucky; st. 2004 audi a4 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Excellent line of sports sedans adds even more models. introductionthe audi a4 represents a line of fantastic sports sedans. They deliver crisp handling, a firm ride, and a well-controlled suspension that make for a precise, high-quality driving experience. The a4 feels like it's on rails around fast sweepers, especially when equipped with audi's quattro all-wheel-drive system, one of the world's best. The v6 engine that comes on 3. 0 models is wonderfully smooth and quite strong, and it works very well when paired with the optional automatic. The v8-powered s4 delivers awesome performance and serious enthusiasts love it, but its suspension may be too firm for most drivers.  the a4 was completely redesigned for 2002. Last year, the cabriolet (convertible) and avant (wagon) models joined the lineup. The a4 1. 8t sedan 25,250) comes standard with cloth upholstery, a five-speed manual gearbox, and front-wheel drive. Standard amenities include dual-zone climate control and a 150-watt, 10-speaker stereo with six-cd in-dash changer. The 1. 8t is also available with front-wheel drive and a continuously variable transmission, a stepless automatic transmission 26,400). The 1. 8t quattro is available with a six-speed manual 27,450) or a five-speed tiptronic automatic 28,500). The a4 1. 8t avant quattro comes with the six-speed manual 28,450) or the tiptronic automatic 29,500). A4 1. 8t cabriolet 35,250) shares the wagon's power seats and is available only with the cvt and front-wheel drive. It also comes with a more powerful 180-watt stereo.  the a4 3. 0 features a 3. 0-liter v6. The a4 3. 0 front-drive sedan 31,150) comes standard with the cvt, 12-way power driver's seat, leather upholstery, an upgraded stereo, driver information display, and other luxury and trim items, in addition to the v6 engine. Quattro sedans add a 12-way power passenger's seat and are offered with a choice of six-speed manual 32,940) or tiptronic 33,990). The a4 3. 0 avant comes only with quattro, and with the six-speed manual 33,940) or tiptronic 34,990). The a4 3. 0 cabriolet is offered with either the cvt and front-wheel drive 41,800), or quattro and tiptronic 43,550).  the s4 is a high-performance variant that shares the same three bodies, but is powered by a 4. 2-liter v8 rated at 340 horsepower. The s4 is available as a sedan with six-speed manual 45,650) or six-speed tiptronic 46,800) transmission; avant with six-speed manual 46,650) or six-speed tiptronic 47,800); or as cabriolet with the same transmission choices.  options include a 215-watt bose sound system for front-drive sedans 900), the same system with a choice of sirius or xm satellite radio for quattro models 1,000), a navigation system for 3. 0 and s4 1,350), and onstar 750). walkaroundthe audi a4 is a handsome car, shaped in the signature bauhaus style established by the larger a6. The a4 takes styling cues from both the tt roadster and the a6, including its high beltline, prominent chrome-trimmed grille, and notched-in flush taillights. Headlights, bumpers, and door handles are integrated into the body. Few adornments detract from the a4's basic shape, and there is little chrome. On sedans, antennae for the radio, telematics and navigation systems are embedded into the rear glass.  the avant is sporty looking wagon with a steeply sloped rear hatch that sacrifices some cargo room for a slick, up-market profile. Overall, the avant is the same length as the sedan. Its rear hatch can open at two different heights, to allow extra clearance for taller owners. It also features a dual-loading cargo floor, a rakish roof-mounted antenna and unique window trim: black on 1. 8t, brushed aluminum on 3. 0 and s4.  cabriolet models share the sedan's basic lines and clean, taut surfaces in a two-door convertible body style. The wide arc of the soft top accentuates the a4's pure proportions and subtle wedge shape. Cabriolets come with unique features. Among them: brushed aluminum trim around the windscreen and waist. The cabrio's body-colored air dam, especially in the lighter paint colors, accentuates the openings under the front bumper more than the dark-colored air dam on the sedan and avant.  s4 models are distinguished by fully painted bumpers, xenon headlights with contrasting titanium-colored inner housings, aluminum-finish exterior mirrors, and a trunk-mounted rear spoiler. The s4 avant is further distinguished by its aluminum-colored roof rails.  safety features that come standard on all a4/s4 models include antilock brakes, brake assist, and electronic brake force distribution (ebd); an electronic stability program (esp); dual front airbags that deploy at different rates depending on the severity of a crash, front side-impact airbags, and three-point seat belts at all five locations with pre-tensioners and force limiters in front. Sedans and avants also have curtain-style head-protection airbags for front and rear-seat passengers, while the cabriolet's seat-mounted side-impact airbags are designed to provide head protection. The cabriolet features an active rollover protection system located in the double rear bulkhead. Should the car roll, electronic sensors trigger two protective hoops that pop up from behind the rear seats in less than a second. Together with the extremely rigid windscreen frame, these hoops help to maintain an intact survival zone designed to protect all occupants. Rear side-impact airbags are optional 350) on all models except the cabriolet. interiorthe interior theme of the audi a4 is cool and efficient, as it is in audi's other sedans, and not deliberately snazzy in the fashion of the tt. Materials look and feel richer than those in many other cars in this price range, and the trim matches flawlessly. The cabin beltline is trimmed with aluminum in the 1. 8t and real wood in the 3. 0. The light-colored wood is used to good effect. It's a handsome interior. The interior of the s4 is handsome. The seats are comfortable and supportive in nearly all circumstances. We thought more side bolstering would have been an improvement, though, to hold driver and passenger firmly when cornering. Leather upholstery is available on the 1. 8t sedan and avant as part of a premium package 2000) that also includes a power moonroof, power seats, homelink transmitter and driver information display. A thick, grippy, leather-covered steering wheel and shift lever are standard. The s4 comes with 12-way power recaro sport seats that are firm, supportive, and comfortable. The small, sculpted side mirrors are stylish and aerodynamic, but from the driver's seat they offer a limited viewing range. We would sacrifice the look for wider coverage.  some of the switches could be larger, yet those most frequently adjusted, including stereo volume, are large enough. After a bit of familiarization, everything in the a4 is easy to find with minimal distraction. The radial sunroof switch works well; turn it a quarter, half or full turn and the roof opens a corresponding distance. With the premium package for 3. 0 models 1,525-$2,300), nearly all temperature, ventilation and stereo adjustments can be made using buttons on the steering wheel hub.  audi's red and white gauge lighting, its warning lights and leds, are among the sharpest, most readable going. Flow-control switches on each dash vent are illuminated. In the s4, gray-faced gauges feature the s4 logo.  attention to detail and thoughtful features are everywhere. The wipers make another final sweep several seconds after the washer is used, cleaning those remaining droplets that were blown up the windshield. We love the lock buttons with the little red led to signal when the doors are locked. Power central locking is executed well, with a central switch to lock all doors. Dealers can program the doors to lock automatically at 8 mph. The remote fob is designed to operate at up to 150 feet away.  rear passengers should find adequate legroom in the sedan or avant, as the a4's design makes great use of the floor space. There's room in back for three, with three-point harnesses at all positions, but it's comfortable with two.  trunk space in the a4 sedan is among the largest in the class (13. 4 cubic feet, compared to just 10. 7 in the bmw 3 series and 12. 2 in the mercedes c-class). Moreover, the lid swings high and back for easy access. Anti-lock Brakes✔ Power Seats✔ Climate Control✔ Sunroof/Moonroof✔ Navigation System

2000 dodge dakota review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. This truck is just right. introductiongoldilocks would have liked the dodge dakota. Some people find large, full-sized pickups too big, and smaller, compact trucks too small. Club cabs are only available with two doors.  choose from three trim levels: base, sport and slt. Base regular cab 2wd retails for $13,555; sport regular cab 2wd goes for $14,860; and slt regular cab sells for $16,975. Sport trim adds better seats and interior trim and upgrades to the exterior. The 4. 7-liter is new to the dakota line this year. New color choices: dark garnet, red pearl coat, sierra bronze pearl coat, amber fire pearl coat, and patriot blue pearl coat.  limited-production r/t models come with a high-performance version of the 5. 9-liter v8. Available on 2wd regular or club cabs, the dakota r/t sport group includes aggressive (255/55r17) tires mounted on 17-inch aluminum wheels, heavy-duty stabilizer bars, and a limited-slip rear differential. The r/t is lowered 1 inch. The package adds bucket seats, fog lights, special trim and a long list of convenience items. It adds $2,410 to a club cab and $2,370 to a regular cab. walkarounddakota features the freightliner styling of the bigger dodge ram. Bold lines give it a big, burley look, like it's ready to take on anything that comes its way.  regular and club cabs have a 6-ft. 6-in. Bed - a good size for a compact truck. The quad cab, on the other hand, has a 5-ft. 3-in. According to dodge, people seldom need the full length of the longer bed. Those who need more cargo space can consider an optional bed extender -an aluminum cage that flips over the lowered tailgate to extend the bed by 18 inches. It adds utility, but it isn't like having a full-sized bed. The driver sits high and there are no obvious blind spots. Optional 6x9-inch mirrors improve visibility rearward.  the quad cab is roomy and comfortable. The front seat is 40/20/40 split. The wide console dodge has been using in ram and dakota pickups works well for storage area, but it gets in the way when fastening seat belts. A pullout cup holder at the foot of the center section is a nice touch. Children and smaller adults should be happy back there, but taller folk will find the space confining. A better use for this space is to fold the rear 60/40 split bench seats entirely out of the way for a nice, secure storage area. It also features a trip computer and odometer that reports fuel economy and fuel tank range. There was a considerable amount of wind noise, which was overpowered by that wonderful sound system. Once in the owens valley we hooked up with a couple of fly fishers and headed for the river.  the driver and front seat passenger had tons of legroom. The rear doors are fairly wide - about 37 inches. That, coupled with the fact that there is no cutout in them for the rear wheel-well (like there is in many suvs), makes getting in and out of the rear seat relatively easy. It also means the rear windows roll all the way down.  the floor-mounted transfer case lever (dodge doesn't offer push-button 4wd on the dakota) is easy to reach and operate. We hit one particularly sandy section and slipped easily into 4wd without dropping speed. Later, on a steep hill, we pulled the transfer case into 4wd-low and easily walked up a hill that had a good 15-degree grade.  on washboard sections of hard-packed dirt roads in 2wd, the backend had a tendency to fishtail - common in unloaded pickups. It exhibited similar tendencies in radical transient maneuvers on dry pavement. The brakes delivered straight and true stopping power. We were impressed with the quad cab's turning radius. For a truck its length, it makes relatively tight turns.  dodge claims its new 4. 7-liter v8 590), designed from a clean sheet of paper, is the most refined v8 ever offered on a dodge truck. It's a powerful little devil, rated at 235 horsepower and 295 foot-pounds of torque. This transmission was designed in tandem with the 4. 7-liter engine and they are precisely calibrated to each other. Its onboard computer continuously adjusts the shift pattern to match the way the truck is driven. A tall first gear ratio gives the driver better initial acceleration. It selects one of two second-gear ratios based on load and driver input. Its reverse gear uses a ratio equal to the first gear, beneficial when backing up with a heavy trailer. summarydodge dakota is a solid, well-built truck i found fun to drive. 2001 hyundai santa fe review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. An attractive package with looks to match. introductionthe questioner, an airport shuttle driver, had just spied the 2001 hyundai santa fe parked outside the hotel's entrance. 'that's a hyundai?' he was favorably impressed. Even without an up-close-and-personal examination, he allowed as how he'd take a close look at the santa fe if he were in shopping mode.  we were in southern california, where automotive observation has achieved post-graduate degree status. On a lengthy drive the following day, everyday folk echoed the shuttle driver's reaction. From blue-haired teens to elderly blue hairs, the response was the same: 'what's that?' 'a hyundai.' finnbar o'neill, president and chief executive officer of hyundai motor america, said the santa fe recorded a 'very high gawk factor' whenever he drove one on los angeles freeways. These initial reactions give hope for hyundai officials as the company launches its first sport-utility in the world's toughest automotive market.  while we didn't gawk, we liked what we saw. And for the most part, we liked how the santa fe drove, both on and off paved roads. lineupthe 2001 hyundai santa fe comes in three versions. They range from $18,299 to $21,999. Traction control, for instance, and abs. Also hyundai's full-time 4wd system. And automatic climate control. And the power-adjustable driver's seat and heated front seats. Hyundai has never designed a vehicle like this before, so it wasn't constrained with a sport-utility image, or that of an xuv for cross-over utility vehicle, an huv for hybrid utility vehicle, or even a cute-ute.  overall, santa fe's proportions are nicely balanced. The friendly front end blends smoothly into gentle flanks that suggest sufficient robustness to promise an off-road capability beyond that which most owners will expect or explore. Large wheel arches reinforce this robustness. The glasshouse is adequately sized. The nifty, pistol-grip latch handle makes opening the gas-strutted liftgate a one-handed cinch, while the inside-mounted pull-down grip make closing it easy. When open, the liftgate easily clears six-footers.  being new to the genre, hyundai didn't have any mistakes to undo. And rear seat passengers don't need to turn their feet sideways to clear the door jamb.  once in, the interior is mostly touch-friendly. Human-hand sized controls for the stereo and climate control system offer easy adjustment. Climate controls felt and looked plasticky, though.  seats are quite comfortable. Space-wise, the santa fe is competitive with or betters the competition. Only the ford escape beats the santa fe by more than a half-inch in front-seat headroom or hiproom.  the santa fe's rear-seat headroom equals or beats all but the suzuki grand vitara. Santa fe legroom equals or beats the competition. Rear-seat passengers get head restraints and three-point seatbelts only on the outer positions, none for the center position. The shoulder belt anchor loops are fixed, not adjustable. The restraining loops for rear-seat belt buckles don't seem very durable. Rear-seat cupholders are molded into the door-mounted map pockets.  cargo-wise, the ford escape is the only competitor significantly bettering the santa fe. For hauling cargo-type stuff, the santa fe is a nirvana of tie-down loops, boasting as many as nine, depending on the seating configuration. That's good power when compared against the v6-powered ford escape and suzuki grand vitara. Indeed, only the ford escape and mazda tribute, which come with a 200-horsepower 3. 0-liter v6, offer more power in this class. Still, we were a bit disappointed. Responsiveness was a bit sluggish. Downshifts were prompt and smooth, but somewhat less than fulfilling. Acceleration from a stoplight was, well, ok. We don't doubt the rated towing capacity, but we suspect it will be less than exhilarating.  handling, though, was excellent with minimal top-heaviness in corners. The gls proved to be much, much more fun and more responsive, no doubt the benefit of subtracting the 331 pounds the 4wd system adds. A couple of sections were challenging, but the santa fe's full-time 4wd system was more than up to the test, even without the traction control system. It's a dynamic, viscous system. Though the torque split wasn't available, we jacked up the back tires and stood on the accelerator and it raced across the room. So the system appears to do a good job of sending the torque where it's needed: to the tires with the most grip. summaryhyundai's first sport-utility looks good. It's fun to drive, particularly the front-wheel-drive gls. Power Locks✔ AM/FM✔ Climate Control✔ Air Conditioning

2004 volvo s60 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The s60 combines excellent performance and a great shape with volvo's outstanding safety features. It feels like a tight european sedan, with a smooth ride.  for 2004, there's a new engine option and a new rack-and-pinion steering system, improving on its already good acceleration and precise handling.  the s60 fills the middle range in volvo's lineup: it's larger than the s40, but not quite as large as the premium-luxury s80. Not surprisingly, the s60 also fits between those models in price. lineupno less than five 2004 models are available: s60 2. 4 26,960), s60 2. 5t 29,610), s60 2. 5t awd 31,385), s60 t5 33,285) and s60r 37,250).  s60 2. 4 comes with a 2. 4-liter, five-cylinder engine that produces 168 horsepower and 166 pounds-feet of torque. (a 165-horsepower, super-low-emissions, or sulev, version is sold only in california.) a five-speed manual transmission is standard. A five-speed automatic transmission is optional 1,000). A sport package 795) adds fog lights and 16-inch alloy wheels. The premium package 2,995) adds leather upholstery, wood trim, electronic climate control, a trip computer, a moonroof, and a power driver's seat with adjustable lumbar support and memory.  the 2. 5t gets a turbocharged 2. 5-liter engine for 2004 that produces 208 horsepower and 236 foot-pounds of torque. The 2. 5t comes standard with the equipment included the s60 2. 4 model's sport and premium packages. The 2. 5t sport package 795) adds sport seats, geartronic auto-stick control for the transmission, 17-inch thor wheels with 235/45r17 tires. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, with the geartronic automatic optional 1,200). The t5 gets the same equipment and package options as the 2. 5t, and adds dynamic stability traction control, or dstc, or as standard equipment.  new to the lineup is the ultra high-performance s60r, which boasts 300 horsepower and 295 foot-pounds of torque beginning at just 1950 rpm. It comes with a choice of a new volvo-built six-speed close-ratio gearbox or five-speed automatic with a manual mode, and high-performance brakes.  convenience features common to every s60 include air conditioning with a pollen filter; power windows, trunk release and door locks; illuminated visor mirrors; a trunk light; a tilt/telescopic steering wheel wrapped in leather; headlight wipers; power folding headrests; 60/40 split-folding rear seat; cupholders front and rear, steering-wheel controls for the audio system; and remote keyless entry. The climate package 495) includes rainsensor wipers, which automatically adjust wiper speed based on the amount of water on the windshield. A dolby pro logic surround sound stereo 1,200) is available on 2. 4t, 2. 5t awd, and t5. Volvo's new on call plus telematics/mobile phone 835) is available for all models.  volvo is a leader in safety and all s60 models get a raft of safety and security items: front, side and head airbags up front; five head restraints; seats that move on impact to reduce whiplash injuries; an immobilizer and an alarm; a safe approach and home safe lighting system; and anti-lock disc brakes with electronic brake distribution. walkaroundthe volvo s60 looks like a smaller version of the big s80 luxury sedan. It's handsome in a lars-in-a-cable-knit sweater kind of way. Not a remnant remains of the 'boxy but safe' styling that volvo championed so doggedly for decades.  volvo says the s60 represents 'the essence of contemporary scandinavian design. The s60 seems compact at first glance, and there's a hunched-shoulder look to the rear flanks, suggesting a hockey player ready to lead a charge up the ice.  the s60r is distinguished by a smoother, longer nose; a smaller, lower grille; and a larger air dam with bigger intake openings for the big turbo and twin intercoolers. interioroverall, the volvo s60 interior is handsome and comfortable. The leather looks and feels like quality. There's good interior space up front, more than in the bmw 3 series or mercedes c-class.  the dashboard flows in a pleasant shape. The quality of the material used to cover other surfaces is good. The gauges are attractive, with their flat gray background, and easy to read, while the switches are intuitive and easy to use. The heating, ventilation and air conditioning controls are well designed and easy to operate, with big buttons that use volvo's clever metaphoric design to direct the airflow. Electric window buttons with auto-down are conveniently mounted on the door. Inside door handles are easy to grab.  the innovative radio controls take some familiarization to master. Changing preset channels involves turning a knob, rather than pressing a button, for example. Once understood, however, it works very well. The leather-wrapped steering wheel features controls for the audio system that makes operating it easier while driving.  the center console storage is positioned rearward, so it's harder to reach. The cup holders, mounted just forward of the console, are covered with a flimsy lid. There's another mini cup holder on the center of the dash. The manual shift lever has a silver-colored plastic cover at its base that looks like silver-colored plastic. A traditional leather boot would better complement the s60's luxurious leather upholstery.  getting into the back seat requires a duck of the head. An average-sized male will be short of legroom, however. The trunk itself is roomy and deep; it'll hold a lot of small bags, but big hard-sided bags might be a challenge. The rear seats are split 60/40 and fold down to carry long items. Driven hard around turns, it almost seems like a '90s version of a '60s muscle car. The relatively long throw of the five-speed gearbox adds to the retro feel.  the s60 doesn't offer the razor-edge handling of the bmw 330i. Pushed through bumpy, high-speed corners, the s60's steering can't keep up. The suspension is tuned for comfort, not hard cornering, so the body leans in the chase. But the ride is excellent, even over nasty bumps, even with the optional 17-inch wheels fitted with pirelli p6 all-season 235/45hr17 radials.  the s60 is front-wheel-drive, and torque steer rears its head, especially with the more powerful t5. Volvo's turbocharged engines get great gas mileage. With the five-speed manual transmission the t5 gets 21/27 mpg.  the brakes were on the soft side, but the abs was very smooth. We didn't feel thrown forward in the seat under hard braking, as we have with other sports sedans, including the bmw 330i.  the steering is slightly heavier in the s60 awd, because of the weight of the all-wheel-drive system. (volvo prefers to say it has a more 'on-center feel,' which is fair enough.) the ride also is firmer on the all-wheel-drive version, using stiffer shocks to handle the weight. We think it's a worthwhile tradeoff to get the awd's improved traction and handling in the rain and snow.  we drove over gravel roads in the s60 awd, and the directional stability on this loose surface was excellent. Power in the s60 awd is distributed between the front and rear wheels using a wet multi-plate clutch controlled by electronics, and the distribution varies according to conditions. With a steady throttle on dry pavement, about 95 percent of the drive is transmitted to the front wheels; but up to 70 percent can go to the rear wheels when required. The balance changes instantaneously. When one wheel slips 15 degrees, far less than any human can detect, the balance of power shifts away from that wheel, thus replacing the slip with grip. In other words, it's just more secure and better stuck to the road when the weather gets nasty.  the s60r is another. 2001 ford mustang review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. First and still foremost. introductionthe ford mustang has remained true to the traits that made an instant classic of the 1964-1/2 original, even as it is entering the third year of its fifth generation. It's still relatively big for a sporty car, with plenty of available options, and small-block v8 power.  with the latter, there's plenty of torque. It won't be mistaken for anything else. It makes a statement. The mustang has only two true competitors, the chevrolet camaro and the pontiac firebird. For 2001, the ford has added a value-leader v6 coupe in standard 16,805) trim. That makes nine different price points, and we haven't even mentioned the super high-performance cobra; the cobra is again offered in coupe and convertible styles, in one trim level.  the mustang v6 is a 3. 8-lliter overhead-valve unit producing 190 horsepower. The 4. 6-liter overhead-cam v8 produces 260 horsepower, and mustangs that have it are called gts. The rear fender air intake, for example, has sharp corners and pronounced lines; but the rocker panels curve out, and the fenders have pronounced front and rear wheel well arches. The front end features wraparound complex reflector headlamps with integrated side marker lamps, combined with a square-edged honeycomb grille and a chrome pony. Tricolor front fender badges recall the good old days, as does the prominent but non-functional hood scoop.  for 2001, gt models get unique hood and side-scoop treatments, along with fog lights and a rear spoiler.  the mustang's arched roofline is pretty modern, but around back it's 1965 again with vertical, three-element taillamps. Wheels are available in 15-, 16- or 17-inch sizes, depending on model, but each features a flat-spoke design to complement the sharp corners of the body shell. interiorthe current-generation mustang has better seats than ever before, with longer travel, and seatbelts are attached to the seat frames so they move with them. All models feature reclining bucket seats. Leather upholstery is standard in the premium gt, optional in some other models. Running horses embossed on the upper portions of the seat backrests recall the deluxe 'pony' interior of the mid-sixties. The instrument panel, center console and headliner are color-keyed.  for 2001, ford has redesigned the center console, repositioned the front cupholder, made the rear cupholder larger, while adding a tissue holder and a power outlet. An electric rear window defroster, previously optional, is now standard on all mustangs.  the coupe interior is cozy, with enough seat-track length to accommodate tall drivers and just enough elbowroom to keep from feeling cramped. The mustang's back seat is small, with only enough room for small objects or kids. The trunk is small with an even smaller opening. A split fold-down rear seat is standard on all models and handy for hauling cargo.  an 80-watt premium sound system with both cd and cassette capability comes standard on all models. Serious sound fans can opt for the 230-watt, 10-speaker mach 460 system, which comes standard in premium-trim mustangs and mustang gts, and is a $550 option in deluxe models. For 2001, it can be ordered with an in-dash, six-cd changer. driving impressionperformance is what the mustang gt is all about. Its 4. 6-liter, sohc modular v8 produces 260 horsepower at 5250 rpm, with 302 pounds-feet of torque at 4000 rpm. And it sounds great, whether cruising or at full throttle. Last year, the gt engine benefited from revised camshafts and intake manifold runners, and larger valves for improved airflow above 3000 rpm. A new coil-on-plug ignition system replaced the previous ignition for higher-energy sparks.  mustang's 3. 8-liter split-port v6 engine develops 190 horsepower at 5250 rpm, with 220 foot-pounds of torque at 2750 rpm. All models, regardless of engine or transmission, have a 3. 27:1 rear axle ratio.  the flexibility of both the v8 and v6 engines make them good mates for the transmissions, which have sufficient strength to take high-rpm shifts for the life of the car. Both transmissions shift smoothly. The bosch system works at all speeds: whenever wheelspin is detected, the system retards ignition timing, cuts fuel flow, and activates the brakes at one or both drive wheels, in that order. The car involves the driver. Most of the raw edges and choppiness of the previous generation have been smoothed out. The current-generation mustang was engineered for improved rear-suspension compliance, with longer wheel travel, which reduces ride harshness. A revised boost curve gives the steering a more linear response and better on-center feel than in pre-1999 mustangs. And the turning circle of this latest mustang has been reduced by three feet through changes to the steering rack, the lower control arms and front stabilizer bars.  the braking system was re-engineered for 1999, also, with new aluminum twin-piston front calipers to reduce unsprung weight by a significant 10 pounds. The new calipers also contribute to greatly improved brake pedal feel, while the new master cylinder that arrived at the same time improved not only modulation but also the ratio of brake pedal travel to braking action. Abs, like traction control, is standard on premium v6s and all v8s. It can be ordered as a $730 package with traction control on all other mustangs except base-level, manual-transmission coupes. Abs helps the driver to maintain steering control under hard braking, a useful, though not necessarily advisable, feat in the mustang. summarythe camaro and firebird are slightly more powerful than the mustang gt. The mustang gt is also less expensive than either of the gm pony cars, by several thousand dollars. For now, however, the mustang is merely the best. model lineupcoupe: standard 16,805), deluxe 17,370), premium 18,600), gt deluxe 22,440), gt premium 23,590), cobra (na)convertible: deluxe 22,220), premium 24,785), gt deluxe 26,695), gt premium 27,845), cobra (na). assembled indearborn, michigan. model testedmustang gt premium 23,590). 2001 dodge dakota review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The baby bear would love this one. introductiondodge dakota takes the middle ground in terms of size. Some people find full-size pickups too big, and smaller, compact trucks too small. For them, the dakota seems just right. The dakota is larger than the ford ranger, chevy s-10, gmc sonoma, toyota tacoma and other so-called compact pickups, but it's not quite as big as a ford f-150 or chevy silverado.  for 2001, the biggest news is a redesigned interior with a more car-like feel. lineupdodge dakota is available in three cab configurations: regular cab, club cab, and quad cab. Club cabs are only available with two doors.  choose from three trim levels: base, sport and slt. Base regular cab 2wd retails for $13,910; sport regular cab 2wd goes for $14,695; and slt regular cab sells for $16,810. Sport trim adds better seats and interior trim and upgrades to the exterior. The 4. 7-liter was new to the dakota line last year. It adds $2,420 to a club cab and $2,380 to a regular cab. walkarounddakota shares its freightliner styling with the full-size dodge ram. Bold lines give it a big, burley look, like it's ready to take on anything that comes its way.  regular and club cabs have a 6-foot 6-inch bed - a good size for a compact truck. The quad cab, on the other hand, has a 5-foot 3-inch bed. According to dodge, people seldom need the full length of the longer bed. Those who need more cargo space can consider an optional bed extender -an aluminum cage that flips over the lowered tailgate to extend the bed by 18 inches. Sometimes the bed extender works great, but a lowered tailgate with a mesh opening won't hold dirt back like longer bed with a solid tailgate. The instrument panel is easier to reach and easier to use, and almost all of the switchgear has changed. One example is the new rotary dial for the electronic transfer case, replacing the lever used previously. Door trim and carpeting are updated, as are the center and overhead consoles. Leather is now optional on quad cab. The driver sits high and there are no obvious blind spots. Optional 6x9-inch mirrors improve visibility rearward. The quad cab is roomy and comfortable. The front seat is a 40/20/40 split. The wide console works well as a storage area for miscellaneous junk, but it gets in the way when fastening seat belts. A pullout cup holder at the foot of the center section is a nice touch. Getting in and out of the rear seat is aided by the fact that there is no cutout for the rear wheels (like there is in many sport-utilities). There's good knee room, but not a lot of foot space for stretching legs. Like most of the smaller crew cab pickups, the rear seat back is bolt upright, and not very comfortable. There's plenty of headroom in the rear seats, however. Children and smaller adults should be happy back there, but taller folk will find the space confining. Unlike some suvs, the rear windows on the quad cab roll all the way down.  a better use for the rear of the quad cab is to fold the rear 60/40 split bench seats entirely out of the way for a nice, secure storage area. Not all compact trucks allow the seats to be folded out of the way like these on the dodge. It also features a trip computer and odometer that reports fuel economy and fuel tank range. The console is part of the overhead convenience group 1160) and includes compartments for sunglasses and garage door openers, auto-dimming rearview mirror and map lights. driving impressionthe dodge dakota sport 4x4 quad cab is smooth and comfortable. Wind noise is a companion at higher speeds.  the rotary dial for transfer case is easy to reach and operate. We hit one particularly sandy section and switched easily into 4wd without dropping speed. Later, on a steep hill, we switched into 4wd-low and easily walked up a hill that had a good 15-degree grade.  on washboard sections of hard-packed dirt roads in 2wd, the back end has a tendency to lose grip at speed - common in unloaded pickups. We were impressed with the quad cab's turning radius. For a truck its length, it makes relatively tight turns.  the brakes deliver straight and true stopping power. It's a powerful little devil, rated at 235 horsepower and 295 foot-pounds of torque. The 4. 7-liter engine can be paired with a five-speed manual or dodge's new 'multi-speed' automatic transmission. Its reverse gear uses a ratio equal to the first gear, beneficial when backing up with a heavy trailer. summarydodge dakota is a solid, well-built truck that can be fun to drive. 2001 dodge ram 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A heavy-duty full-size with everyday comfort. introductionthough it's now the oldest design among current full-size pickups, the dodge ram may still be the best-looking truck on the market. Clearly, it's the most stylish.  it drives and rides well with quick steering and excellent brakes. Five engines are offered: 3. 9-liter v6, 5. 2-liter v8, 5. 9-liter v8, 8. 0-liter v10 and two cummins 5. 9-liter diesel inline-6 choices. Every engine comes with a choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Short and long beds are available.  the 5. 2-liter v8 produces 230 horsepower, while the 5. 9-liter v8 generates 245 horsepower and an impressive 335 pounds-feet of torque. The basic cummins diesel produces 235 horsepower and 460 pounds-feet of torque, while the new-for-2001 high-output version cranks out 245 horsepower and a stump-pulling 505 pounds-feet of torque.  standard, club cab and quad cab bodies are available in lt, laramie slt, and sst trim levels. The bold design with broad-shouldered front fenders is reminiscent of big freightliners steaming down the road with a full load of logs. It remains the best-looking pickup on the market. To improve structural rigidity, dodge designed a beam that runs laterally under the truck, and reinforced both the a and c pillars. Side door guard beams were also added to improve protection from side impacts.  the optional sport package comes with a body-colored grille and front and rear bumpers, decals, fog lamps, outline white letter tires, and cast aluminum wheels. The absence of a b-pillar makes it much easier to get in or out of the rear seat; it also makes it much easier to stick something behind the front seats. This includes a new steering wheel design, a big storage compartment, an extra power point, and new cupholders designed to handle any commercially available drink container. Other recent improvements include a keyless remote entry system, an upgraded base sound system, a cassette and cd sound system option and a new center console. The instrument pod features vacuum-fluorescent odometer and trip odometer that are tamperproof, and there are driver-programmable keyless entry key fobs. Other interior features include heated power mirrors, illuminated power door locks and window switches, and an optional security alarm system.  the front seat in all rams is divided 40/20/40, with a huge fold-down center section that doubles as armrest and writing table. When no one is sitting in it, the center position provides a large storage box, with divided spaces for coins, cassettes, maps or a laptop computer. The front seat belts are integrated into the seats themselves, which gets rid of messy hanging belts -- a particularly nice improvement for the wide-open quad cab doorway.  the quad cab rear seat is the same one used in other extended cab versions. It's handy for children, pets and petite adults, but it is not very comfortable for adults on long trips. The bench portion of the seat flips up out of the way effortlessly from either side for hauling tools or cargo. The power window option comes with an express-down switch on the driver's side. Steering wheel mounted radio controls are optional. There are two new overhead console designs; one with and one without trip computer. This engine has a ton of torque and a broad power band, which makes it a great deal of fun to drive. Passing is effortless. The manual transmission can add flexibility in off-road situations, but we recommend the automatic for street use. Rear suspension is a conventional live axle with leaf springs designed to carry heavy loads. The dodge v8 pickup truck has for years had a special kind of presence on the street, and the ram backs up that presence with excellent street manners and ride.  steering revisions that were new last year make steering much more precise than earlier models. Steering in the earlier rams was light and quick, but had a lot of dead space on-center and seemed to require constant left-right adjustments.  braking, with discs in front, drums in rear, is exemplary. The ram stops quickly with superb straight-line stability. Recent improvements to the instrumentation, powertrain and body combinations have made it an all-around better truck.

2001 ford expedition review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Flexible seating arrangements give families versatility. The third row is cramped for all but smaller children. Expedition's soft suspension filters out unwanted road vibration, and softens potholes, driveway entrances and other bumps. Its 5. 4-liter v8 delivers responsive acceleration performance, while the automatic transmission provides impressively smooth shifting. Power steering is over-assisted to ease maneuvering in crowded parking lots, and a reverse warning system reduces the chance of backing into something. lineuptwo trim levels, xlt and eddie bauer, make up the expedition model range. With little demand for plain, entry-level vehicles in this class, ford equips the xlt well and the eddie bauer even better. Standard equipment for both models includes antilock brakes, third-row seating, and remote keyless entry. Visual differences between xlt and eddie bauer versions are confined to paint and trim. The expedition derives much of its chassis and mechanical hardware from ford's f-150 pickup.  xlt comes standard with a 232-horsepower 4. 6-liter v8.  stepping up to the eddie bauer 4x4 model brings a larger, more powerful 5. 4-liter v8 that produces 260 horsepower. Eddie bauer also adds a power moonroof, leather-wrapped steering wheel, a 290-watt mach am/fm cassette audio system, a 6-cd changer in the center console, and automatic climate control. A tv/vhs rear-seat entertainment system is a new option for the top-level expedition. walkaroundexpedition borrows the best styling elements from the f-150. From nose to windshield, the expedition shares sheet metal with the ford's best-selling pickup.  even though the expedition debuted in 1997, it has aged well. It's still handsome, with a sloping hoodline and rounded front end that reflect attention to aerodynamics. It's a design that pays off with improved fuel efficiency and reduced wind noise. As a matter of necessity, the sides and back are shaped more for utility than style, which look similar to the 2001 explorer. Clever use of trim and rounded corners add eye appeal.  stretching more than 17 feet from nose to tail, the expedition is big. Twisting it counterclockwise opens the rear liftgate for better access and bigger load jobs. The load height is a bit high on the expedition, however. A windstar minivan is far better in this regard.  lights on the running boards make climbing aboard easier on dark and stormy nights. Hefty front tow hooks facilitate yanking for those who stray too far into the muck. interiorexpedition's interior is big and comfortable. Climbing in and out is a chore, however, with the tall ride height. Women wearing nice dresses often struggle to climb up, something that's impossible to do gracefully. Expedition can carry up to nine people, when equipped with bench seats at all three locations. A more comfortable arrangement is six passengers, two in each row.  optional captain's chairs in the second row 795), give rear-seat passengers a more luxurious experience. The downside is that the space between them is still there when the third-row bench is removed and the rear seats are folded down; this can present a hazard for a big dog because it can step or fall into the well between the seats, so it's better to have the center seats folded up for this situation.  the available third-row bench provides seating for two more passengers, but it's cramped back there. Once back there, there's no headroom and legroom is cramped. It's best reserved for children who have grown out of booster seats, but haven't grown to adult heights.  the third-row bench can be folded up: flip the lever, fold the seatback down, grab the floor lever and lift up. A kickstand secures it in the up position. This is a good solution when carrying cargo, but it isn't a friendly place for a dog because of all the hardware sticking out of the exposed seat bottom.  a better option is to yank the third row out and wheel it into the garage. It's quite heavy though, so dropping it to the ground won't help a bad back. Once on the pavement, it can be wheeled to the garage. Lifting it back into the vehicle requires some heft when doing it alone, another back-strainer, but once it's in, it pops right into place.  front seats offer a myriad of power adjustments, but i had trouble finding a comfortable setting. Lots of legroom and headroom adds to the comfort of center-seat passengers on long trips.  first- and second-row occupants get separate heating, ventilation and air conditioning controls; a third set of controls for the third seat is optional.  a curved dashboard houses instruments and controls where they can easily be reached. The eddie bauer version comes with an overhead console with a digital display that provides compass headings, date and time and average fuel economy; a switch operates power swing-out rear quarter windows. Nicely designed cruise controls are mounted on the steering wheel. The wiring around the rear-view mirror is untidy.  attractive and durable materials are used throughout the expedition's cabin. Soft-touch coverings are applied to switches and door panels. The window switches are lighted internally at night, a nice touch that not all vehicles carry. Optional adjustable pedals allow the driver to adjust the pedal cluster at the touch of a dashboard-mounted switch. Speed-sensitive variable-assist power steering works in the driver's favor by keeping steering effort low.  lots of large windows, along with big mirrors, make it easy to see in all directions. Extra care and attention is required when maneuvering in close-quarters, however, because the expedition sits tall with tall fenders. It felt far more comfortable than most pickup trucks and sport-utilities and even on many sedans when traversing the rough, cobblestone streets in the historic fan district in richmond, virginia. Vibration can be felt through the steering wheel, acceptable for a truck like this one, but not a luxury car. An advantage of the expedition's long wheelbase is a resistance to pitching over freeway expansion joints and other irregularities. When driven on back roads, the expedition does not lean unduly in corners, nor does the front end dive excessively under hard braking. Brake pedal feel is light, yet precise. The over-assisted power steering does require frequent corrections on the highway, which keeps the expedition driver busy.  an optional load-leveling system 815) uses compressed air to compensate for varying loads while improving ride quality. Built into the system is a one-inch increase in ride height, as if the expedition wasn't tall enough. AM/FM✔ Anti-lock Brakes✔ Climate Control✔ CD Changer✔ Air Conditioning✔ Sunroof/Moonroof

2001 toyota sienna review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A quality minivan through-and-through. introductiontoyota's sienna makes a good argument against buying an suv. It delivers an excellent ride, and comes with a smooth and powerful v6 engine and smooth-shifting automatic. The sienna also comes with toyota quality and it has earned top-notch government crash test scores. lineupthree trim levels are available: ce 23,905), le 25,755), xle 28,436). All are the same length, and all come with dual sliding rear doors. An optional power sliding door on the right is available for le and xle models 395).  of the three trim levels, the ce is basic: cruise control, and power windows, locks and mirrors are all optional.  mid-line le comes with all the popular features. It comes standard with dual-temperature air conditioning with separate controls for the rear, power windows, locks and mirrors, cruise control, privacy glass and better quality cloth. The xle upgrade package #1 1,610) provides leather trim and a premium audio system with radio, cassette, and cd changer. Also available for sienna is a huge power moonroof and a towing package.  new features for 2001 include an optional entertainment system (with a roof-mounted flip-down tv screen, vcr, and av outlets for video game systems), a restyled exterior, redesigned audio and climate control systems, and optional side airbags and (on the xle) electronic stability control. walkaroundwith its clean, conventional looks, the sienna is a classic minivan with subtle touches of sport-utility styling. The long, sloping nose is unmistakably minivan, but square lines elsewhere -- particularly when viewed from the rear -- recall a sport-utility vehicle. Where many minivans display vast sweeps of metal, the sienna has a relatively even proportion of glass to metal, another suv characteristic.  sienna uses a stretched version of the camry platform. It is built on the same georgetown, kentucky, assembly line as the camry. Basing the sienna on the camry results in nice road manners. These savings allow toyota to bring the price of the sienna closer to the norm for the class.  sitting in the driveway, the sienna looks neat and compact. Its just-right size fits in between the chrysler town & country and voyager. The sienna is 6 inches narrower inside than the chrysler minivans. interiordespite its moderate length, the inside of the sienna is roomy. Three-row seating is standard, and the rear cargo area is an accommodating 18 inches deep from hatch opening to seatback. The seats can be removed with the seat backs folded flat, which make them easier to handle. The seat latches are superbly executed; they release easily and are simple to re-install.  getting in and out of the sienna is easy. Dual sliding doors are now standard and ensure passengers get in and out in a hurry and minimize running around to the far side of the vehicle to grab a kid. Child-safety door locks defeat the inside door handles on all sliding doors. At the full-open position, an interlock stopper prevents sliding doors from sliding closed when parked on a downhill grade. A half-door stopper prevents the left-side sliding door from fully opening when the fuel lid is opened to prevent the door from making contact with the fueling area.  the optional right-side power sliding door can be opened by pressing buttons on the dash, keyless remote or b-pillar, or by pulling on the inside or outside latches. A switch next to the steering wheel allows the driver to override these buttons so that the power sliding door cannot be opened. The power sliding door feature works without having the key in the ignition. The power sliding door can be opened like a normal door when the power switch is turned off. The power sliding door senses when an obstacle is in its path and automatically retracts.  step-in height is much lower than that of an suv, making getting in and out much easier for shorter people, older people and everyone else. Once in, the driver enjoys an expansive view of the road, though the seating position is not as high as in many sport-utility vehicles. Visibility is excellent in all directions, thanks to all the glass. Big mirrors (power on le and xle models) offer a good view to the rear. Instruments are big, bright and easy to read.  all seating positions are very comfortable. Though the rear two rows of seats don't offer as much room as the bigger honda odyssey, dodge grand caravan or chrysler town & country, they provide enough room to comfortably seat six people. Little nets attached to the sides of the front seats are great for storing toll tickets, sunglasses or wallets. Fold-down cupholders next to the storage net secure drinks but flip up out of the way when not in use; they don't look like they'd hold tall drinks well, but securely held my venti-sized paper cappuccino cup.  the second row can be equipped with either captain's chairs or a two-place bench seat. The seatbacks fold down to provide a flat surface for food and games and cupholders. Molded into the doors are round holders suitable for one-liter bottles. Cupholders, up to 14 of them, are everywhere. The radio is now located higher in the da. driving impressionthe fact that the sienna is based on the camry is a good thing. So the sienna benefits from a lot of proven technology.  the result is a minivan with a ride as good as any comparable model. A big, tall box will never ride and handle as well as a low, sleek sedan, but the sienna is pretty good. The steering isn't as sharp, and the transient response isn't as crisp as some of the other minivans; it leans in the corners, and seems a bit mushy in transient maneuvers. But overall, the sienna handles well and its soft suspension makes up for any handling deficiencies with its smooth ride quality and solid stability on the highway.  toyota's v6 is easy to live with. It's smooth, reliable, and economical. It generates 210 horsepower, more than either the chrysler 3. 3-liter v6 or ford 3. 8-liter v6. Passing other vehicles on hills is easy: punch it and the sienna takes off, quickly putting the slower vehicle away. On turnpikes and interstates in pennsylvania, new jersey, delaware and maryland, the sienna offered excellent high-speed stability. Power was never an issue. Toyota recommends premium fuel. It always chooses the right gear, forming a team with the v6. Shifts are so smooth when cruising that they are nearly seamless; under hard acceleration the transmission provides positive shifts at the redline. Also in the sienna's favor is toyota's reputation for quality, durability and reliability, along with high resale value. model lineupce 23,905); le 25,775); xle 28,436). assembled ingeorgetown, kentucky. options as testedxle luxury package 3,285) includes leather-seating surfaces, second-row captain's chairs, leather-wrapped steering wheel, six-way power driver's seat, premium am/fm/cassette/cd with six-disc in-dash changer and eight lbl speakers; cargo net 45). model testedxle 28,436).
