2004 toyota sienna review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The new class leader?. introductionthe toyota sienna is all new for 2004. Bigger and better than last year's model, it's the first in a parade of redesigned minivans and may be the new class leader. It's considerably larger than last year's model, and about $1,000 cheaper. Its v6 engine has been bored out for more power and now produces 230 horsepower, while a new five-speed automatic improves response and fuel economy. All come with the new v6 engine and the new five-speed automatic transmission. All are equipped with anti-lock brakes (abs) with electronic brake distribution and brake assist, which help the driver stop quickly and maintain control. The all-wheel-drive xle has a base msrp of $36,930.  numerous option packages are available for all grades.  safety features: a new latch system (lower anchor with tether for children) is used in all second-row seating positions to accommodate new-design child seats. Front side and side curtain srs airbags covering all three seat rows are standard on the xle limited, optional on all other grades. Before designing the new sienna, chief engineer yuji yokoya drove the previous sienna all over north america, through mexico, canada, and the u. S., through every state, every province, some 53,000 miles. A short, slight japanese man, yokoya-san was often accompanied by program manager john jula, a tall, burly american. An odd couple, they couldn't have been more different in stature, appearance, and temperament. But they shared a seriousness of purpose, a devotion to designing the best minivan ever created, and a strong sense of humor. Working with designers and engineers from around the world, they ferreted every weakness and shortcoming of the old (1998-2003) sienna and addressed it with this new sienna.  the biggest shortcoming of the old sienna was its lack of interior roominess. Yokoya saw families buried under luggage. He also determined it needed to be quieter so families could more easily converse on long drives. He wanted better seats. And he wanted to improve stability at high speeds, especially in cross winds and on crowned roads.  the all-new 2004 toyota sienna is substantially larger, wider, taller than the previous-generation model. Its wheelbase is 5 inches longer and the track is 4 inches wider than last year's model. Stretching 200 inches over a 119-inch wheelbase, the new sienna is the same size as the biggest minivans on the market: the honda odyssey, dodge grand caravan, chrysler town & country, ford windstar, and the long-wheelbase versions of the chevrolet venture and pontiac montana.  everything on the sienna is big and bold: big headlamps and big taillamps light up the night and give the sienna presence in the dark. Black pillars, instead of body-colored pillars, make the new sienna look even larger than its considerable dimensions. A big windshield, big wipers, and wiper-mounted washer nozzles designed for snow belt improve driver visibility.  the sienna presents a sleek appearance by minivan standards, enhanced by its steeply raked windshield and the black pillars. The slot for the sliding doors is cleverly hidden, offering a cleaner look. There's lots of room for passengers and cargo. Fold the second- and third-row seats flat and the sienna can carry 4x8 sheets of plywood.  getting in and out of the sienna is easy. The power sliding doors are smooth and quiet and move more quickly than in the past, helpful for impatient passengers. Manual sliding doors and manual rear hatch on the le and ce models have a quality feel as well.  the rear side windows lower partly, though not below the center of gravity of a toddler, and feature anti-pinch protection designed to reduce chance of injuries to small hands and fingers. A nice feature is the availability of sunshades for the second- and third-row seats, which filters strong sunlight better than privacy glass.  up front the driver sits before a smooth, organic dash. Toyota says it splurged on the seats, which are designed to offer comfort for a variety of body shapes over long periods of time. The steering wheel tilts and telescopes. The ce comes with a nice cloth interior, though the door inserts are plain. Le features nicer cloth, nicer door inserts, and other trim. Two glove boxes are provided and a big center console holds 12 cds. Armrest compartments can each hold six cds and there's a spot for a small cell phone just to the right of the shifter. The dry cleaning hooks look big enough to accomodate a load of dry cleaning. In back are hooks for holding grocery bags. There's comparably good legroom and it feels roomy and airy with good room next to the passenger's head. That's impressive given that the sienna is fitted with side-curtain type airbags; they do not intrude into rear headroom as much as other designs. When not needed, the second-row seats tumble forward, presenting a friendly seat bottom to cargo or pets. The second-row seats are easy to remove and reinstall, though the captain's chairs weigh 49 pounds each.  seven. 2001 land rover range rover review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Despite their wild location, they sport formal dinner attire and enjoy fine china, crystal, and silver. At a separate, somewhat rickety table, a single, forlorn hunter dines alone in his shirtsleeves. 'pity about carruthers,' comments one of the better-dressed men, 'losing his dinner jacket like that.'  range rover is all about bringing civility to unlikely places. Few, if any, vehicles can match its combination of rock-climbing ability, refined british luxury and on-road performance. Two models are still available, but both now share the larger, 222-horsepower, 4. 6-liter v8. (the previously standard 4. 0-liter v8 is no longer available in the range rover.)  so now the 4. 6 se 62,000) and 4. 6 hse 68,000) are separated mainly by their level of standard equipment and available options. Hse comes with 18-inch wheels in place of the se's 16-inch wheels. It looks purposeful, yet says class in understated british fashion. Even the expensive lexus lx 470 cannot match the range rover's subtle aesthetics.  both range rover models received a mild exterior makeover for 2000. So for 2001, the company has turned its attention to the interior of the high-line hse, adding even more wood accents and leather trim. Color-coordinated carpets and seat piping, a $750 extra in 2000, have been made a no-cost option for 2001. Last year's optional navigation system returns in a more sophisticated form and is now standard on hse, optional still on se. interiorrange rover's quiet and comforting cabin is adorned with sumptuous leather and burled walnut trim. The high seating position and low waistline add up to excellent outward visibility. Passengers in the back seats enjoy gracious legroom. Dual front airbags are standard, along with side airbags built into the front seats. The tailgate is made of aluminum, so it is very light and easy to close. Nonetheless, the range rover engine is tuned for low-rpm torque for off-road driving. Land rover shares the sophisticated engine management system from bmw's 7 series flagship sedans, boosting power and efficiency.  the steering feels light, over-assisted, and slow to respond, but there's a reason for it: when driving off-road on greasy, slippery surfaces, quick steering motions can cause a loss of traction. So the steering is deliberately slow. This also facilitates minute steering corrections when climbing a boulder field.  similarly, the throttle pedal travels a long distance before the big power comes on, so a tap on the gas doesn't spin the wheels. But this wide range of control calls for extra motion to maneuver the range rover. On fast dirt roads, it will drift with its tail swinging wide, more so than any other luxury sport-utility. It doesn't drift far enough to swap ends, and ultimately gives the skilled driver more control.  air springs raise and lower the body. The system is programmed for five different positions over a range of 5. 3 inches. Around town, the range rover moves along at its standard height. Above 50 mph, the body automatically lowers one inch for better stability in crosswinds. Head off road and shift into low range, and the system raises the ride height for more ground clearance. As a bonus, the air springs tend to isolate the body from high-frequency bumps and vibrations.  off-road, the anti-lock brakes are remarkable. Range rovers use an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with a viscous limited-slip center differential. The viscous coupling allows only a limited difference of speed difference between the front and rear output shafts. This provides excellent traction in slippery conditions. It is quiet and luxurious. The lexus is left behind in the style department, however. And it doesn't have quite the cache of the range rover. Anti-lock Brakes✔ CD Changer✔ Navigation System

2001 toyota sequoia review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Not quite ford excursion or hummer proportions, but still a near-monster truck.  however, the sequoia is also very civilized, quiet, comfortable, and, in the limited version we drove, very luxurious. With standard eight-passenger seating in three rows of seats, the sequoia can haul a boatload of kids (with or without the big dogs in tow).  the sequoia is bigger in nearly every interior and exterior measurement than the toyota land cruiser; however, the top-of-the-line sequoia limited is more than $10,000 less expensive. lineupthe sequoia is offered in sr5 and limited trim lines.  the sr5 comes standard with power windows, mirrors and door locks, cruise control, automatic climate control, and an am/fm stereo with both cassette and cd players. That's no surprise considering they're both built in the same assembly plant in princeton, indiana. The overall look is clean, purposeful, and, above all big. For example, we appreciated the extra front seat visors; while the primary visor is deployed above the side window, an additional visor can be extended down from the headliner to block the sun streaming into the windshield. Plus, there's a terrifically large bin between the front seats, which is split into two levels. The top level has a notepad holder and a place for coins. The bottom level has a molded, bookshelf-like cd holder to keep up to eight cds from rattling around. There's also enough room left over to hold a six-pack or a moderately sized purse. Other items make family outings a snap: multiple cupholders and storage bins scattered throughout the cabin; large openings for the rear doors which make installing child safety seats a breeze; front and rear air conditioning controls; and flexible seating arrangements. The third-row seats are easy to tumble forward (or remove, as they only weigh 52 pounds each) to expand the cargo area. There's enough space back there to clean out toys 'r us during a clearance sale.  however, all is not perfect. Toyota has a tendency to make its adjustable intermittent windshield wiper controls the opposite of what we would call intuitive. But it's the other way around, a minor nit, we admit. Also, the clock is mounted far too low in center of the dash and is obscured by the climate control switches. And not all of us are enamored with the hammertone trim in the limited model. driving impressionpiloting the sequoia on the open road is a pleasure. We loved the smooth and powerful v8 engine. It's a marvel of a power plant, and this truck needs all of its 240 horsepower. The transmission, too, was seamless in operation. With such a long wheelbase and overall heft, the sequoia delivers a comfortable ride on all types of road conditions. Wind noise at highway speeds wasn't obtrusive, but the cabin wasn't as hushed as lexus ls 430 sedan we recently drove.  but all of this luxury and comfort come with a price: the sequoia is an absolute pig at the gas pump. Epa says to expect only 14 mpg in city driving and a paltry 17 mpg on the highway.  braking, while never nerve rattling, takes a little getting used to. We say 'kids' because they're the only ones with the agility to hop over the middle-row to get to the three-person rear seats. The first is a simple button, located fairly low in the center of the dashboard. Engaging this extra traction can be done on the fly without having to stop the vehicle. Instead of modulating the throttle, we simply held the gas down, and it walked right up the hill, transferring torque to the tires with the best grip. Drop it into the low range, and the system automatically locks the center differential for go-anywhere traction capability. Perhaps not the best day-to-day family taxi in congested, urban areas, but certainly unbeatable for family road trips. model lineupsr5 2wd 30,815); sr5 4wd 34,345); limited 2wd 38,955); limited 4wd 42,275). assembled inprinceton, indiana. options as testedin-dash cd changer 200); front side-impact and side curtain airbags 500); rear spoil. 2003 gmc sierra 2500hd review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Redesigned inside and out. introductiongmc sierra is redesigned for 2003. It comes with a bolder, raked front end. Its interior is new as well, redesigned for improved function and appearance. The brakes have been upgraded, and the engines run cleaner. New options include a bose sound system. It does everything pickups have always done, only better, with first-class hauling and towing capabilities. We think the sierra looks a bit classier than the silverado. Gmc's styling is more conservative, more mature, with smoother, more sophisticated lines. The standard sierra upgrades to cloth seats and carpeting. Sle adds niceties such as a cd player, cruise control, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Slt trim, available on extended cabs and crew cabs, adds fog lamps, automatic air conditioning, and onstar telecommunications.  denali is the flagship, available only as an extended-cab, short-bed 4x4. Denali packs a 325-horsepower version of the 6. 0-liter v8, along with automatic transmission and an exclusive, sophisticated full-time all-wheel-drive system. Denali comes with onstar, tone-on-tone leather, dual-zone automatic climate control, extra sound deadening, a bose audio system with separate controls for rear-seat passengers, a unique console and other exclusive amenities. Eight buttons on the steering wheel operate onstar, along with the sound system, trip computer, and other programmable functions. Quadrasteer also enhances high-speed stability. Quadrasteer comes packaged with a limited-slip differential and a trailer-tow package.  professional 2457) is an option package available on all sierras that includes a special full-length console with concealed storage for a personal digital assistant (pda), cell phone, and other items; a seven-quart cooler; a cooled or heated cup holder, and a second big gulp-sized cup holder. The console can be converted for hanging file folders. The professional also features additional lockable storage under the rear seat, a bold chrome grille, 16-inch alloy wheels, a bed liner, and the z85 handling/trailering suspension.  sierra prices cover a broad range, starting at $19,391 for a 1500 2wd v6 work truck, and more than doubling to $44,250 for the luxurious, high-tech denali. A short-box, 4wd extended-cab sle would include the 4. 8-liter v8 for $29,963; and many popular 2wd models list in the $24,000-$28,000 range.  . walkaroundgmc sierra sports an all-new front end for 2003 that ties it more closely to the gmc envoy mid-size suv. The new grille consists of three black horizontal bars that prominently display a big red gmc emblem. New chromed front bumpers include two airflow cutouts. Up-level models have a body-colored lower fascia; base models, a light charcoal fascia. Premium models offer new 16-inch, six-spoke, bright-machined aluminum wheels, while a new optional grille/brush guard adds front-end protection. New bodyside moldings create a cleaner side appearance. The frame rails are hydroformed, a process that uses high-pressure hydraulics to shape relatively large steel components. Tubular crossmembers and roll-formed mid-rails increase rigidity further. This stiff structure enhances handling and ride quality immensely, while improving crashworthiness.  . interiorthe interior of the gmc sierra is extensively redesigned for 2003. Its cab remains the roomiest in the industry, and its door openings are the largest. New dual-stage airbags deploy with less force in less severe collisions. Three-point seat belts are provided in all first and second-row seat positions of 2003 models.  new sound and climate controls for 2003 are more sophisticated, yet easier to operate than last year's. The system comes with am, fm1, fm2, xm1, and xm2 bands. New audio controls on the steering wheel make it easy to switch among station presets and modes. Standard with the bucket seats is a revised and extended center console that flows into the instrument panel. It includes a storage compartment and a 12-volt power outlet at the rear. (all sierras come with three 12-volt power outlets at the bottom center of the dash.) vents and hvac controls for rear-seat passengers are mounted on the rear of the center console on crew cabs and extended cabs.  the instrument cluster has been revised for better readability. The denali's gauges feature blue backlighting and white pointers; other models have white backlighting and orange pointers. A new driver information center reports on as many as 27 vehicle functions (nearly twice as many as the previous message center) with an easy-to-read, single-line lcd display. A compass is incorporated into the overhead console, along with three storage areas for sunglasses, garage door opener, and small items.  extended-cab models offer surprisingly good back-seat accommodations. Climb through the reverse-opening rear door and the rear seat is reasonably comfortable. Rear-seat passengers get their own air-conditioning outlets and a set of drop-down cup holders. When cargo capacity is more important than hauling passengers, the entire rear seat assembly can be loosened from the floor with a wrench and removed through one of the side doors. Not exactly quick release, but a useful feature.  the rear seats in the 1500 hd crew cab are as roomy as the second-row of seats in a suburban. Rear seats are split 60/40 and fold down, providing a large protected cargo area inside the cab.  a panasonic dvd system 995) is available for the 1500hd crew cab, turning it into a real family vehicle. The system comes with a 7-inch flip-down screen, music-cd capability, two sets of wireless headphones with independent volume control, a wireless remote control and three sets of auxiliary video and audio inputs.  . driving impressionon the road, the gmc sierra is quiet and well behaved.  the extended cab model's long 143. 5-inch wheelbase improves its ride and enhances high-speed stability.  the 1500 hd 4wd crew cab does not ride as smoothly as the chevy avalanche, but the ride was reasonably good for what is practically a three-quarter-ton truck with no weight in the bed. Backing a long trailer into a parking space at a 90 degree angle is much easier with quadrasteer than without it. The system shortens turning circles with trailers and makes backing up more intuitive. Climate Control✔ Bucket Seats✔ Cruise Control✔ CD Player✔ Aluminum Wheels✔ Air Conditioning✔ Alloy Wheels

2006 nissan altima review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. High performance, high practicality. introductionthe nissan altima is a roomy, comfortable, practical mid-size sedan. It's designed to please fewer people, but to please those few more intensely.  in this respect the altima reminds us more of mazda's mid-size sedan, the mazda6. Both offer stand-out styling; both surrender some refinement for gains in handling response. In other ways, however, they are diametric opposites: the lean and wiry mazda is the smallest car in this class, powered by a choice of high-winding engines; while the muscular nissan tops the class in both horsepower and wheelbase and is one of the roomiest cars in the class.  the altima delivers stunning acceleration when ordered with its 250-horsepower v6, essentially the same engine used in the nissan 350z and maxima. Punch it in any gear and it takes off, with nimble handling and brakes to match its thrust. The high-performance altima se-r adds 10 more horsepower and even more sports appeal. Altima's interior was redesigned for 2005, which resulted in an improved cabin. Altima also received some mild styling enhancements and a slight boost to its v6 for 2005. Air conditioning and a stereo are not included, however. The base model is only available with a five-speed manual transmission.  the 2. 5 s 19,500) adds air conditioning, power mirrors, remote keyless entry with remote trunk lock, an eight-way adjustable driver's seat, cruise control, a six-speaker audio system, seatback pockets and a lock for the split rear seat. The convenience package 1,680) features alloy wheels, eight-way power driver's seat with lumbar support, leather-wrapped steering wheel, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, trip computer, dual illuminated vanity mirrors, speed-sensitive volume control, automatic headlights and a vehicle security system. The convenience plus package 2,500) adds a power glass sunroof with sunshade to the other goodies, while the premium convenience package 3,300) adds to the above a bose audio system that includes a six-disc in-dash cd changer. Special edition, premium, comfort, and trip packages will also be available.  the 2. 5 sl 23,450) is the luxury altima. The only convenience option is the sunroof 900). This is a very nice car, the top-of-the-line altima.  the 3. 5 se 23,500), on the other hand, is a performance model, equipped with the v6; five-speed manual transmission; 17-inch alloy wheels; wider, speed-rated tires; a performance-tuned suspension; fog lights; and dual chrome exhaust tips. The se is also available with the five-speed automatic 23,800). Cloth upholstery is standard. A leather package 3,000) includes leather upholstery, bose audio, sunroof, and heated front seats and mirrors. Seat materials, trim finishes and the headliner were upgraded and new chrome accents were added. Overall it's a vast improvement over earlier models and closer to toyota and honda levels, but still not quite there. The cloth upholstery is okay and the material used on the dash is nice, but the lids on the front of the center console are flimsy.  the altima is a comfortable car, however, and driver visibility is excellent. The dashboard is set relatively low, with a binnacle directly in front of the driver containing speedometer, tachometer, and water temperature and fuel gauges. The instruments glow orange in the dark, offering less interference to night vision. The three-spoke steering wheel tilts and telescopes to help optimize driving position. The shifter on models with manual transmissions is somewhat long, with long throws.  the available navigation display is located at the top of the center stack and it works well. Audio controls are mounted high on the center stack for easy access. At the top are two rows of buttons, used to control audio, trip computer, and navigation functions, with a small joy stick in the center. Heating/air conditioning control knobs lie directly below and are easy to locate with minimal distraction.  air conditioning vents are flush-mounted on the dash. Seams for the passenger-side airbag are invisible, cleverly hidden in a large expanse of unembellished dashboard surface. The center console has cupholders large enough for one-liter bottles. A power port inside the center console storage area is useful for cell phones. There's an adjustable elbow rest. The parking brake is a proper handbrake, located front and center. The windows can be opened with the remote key fob (by holding down the unlock button), a nice feature on hot summer days.  the rear seats are supportive and comfortable, with good legroom and sufficient headroom. A 6-foot, 4-inch passenger can sit comfortably behind a 6-foot, 4-inch drive.

2004 mitsubishi endeavor review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Mitsubishi hits the major leagues with all-new mid-size crossover suv. introductionabove all else: presence.' the words come straight from mitsubishi's press materials for the introduction of its new mid-sized suv, called endeavor. And the words are true to the effort. For sure, endeavor gets an e for effort, for being designed and built by the north american team in the u. Mitsubishi doesn't dare say the montero is now facing redundancy, just that endeavor's overriding goal has been to produce 'a vehicle that meets the needs of the u. Market head on, without the repackaging of a japanese domestic market product for u. Tastes.' in other words, it may be that mitsubishi motors north america created the endeavor partly to show mitsubishi motors tokyo that it can build, above all else, an suv with presence.  . lineupone engine is available in the endeavor, a bigger, more powerful and improved version of the v6 that powers the higher-priced 2003 montero. It's a 3. 8-liter v6 making 215 horsepower, with an iron block, aluminum heads and single overhead cam. Each configuration comes in three trim levels: ls 25,597), xls 27,897), and limited 31,697); ls awd 27,597), xls awd 29,897), and limited awd 33,197).  ls awd includes a 14-watt sound system with single-disc cd player, five-spoke alloy wheels, intermittent rear window washer, roof rails, abs with ebd, steering wheel controls, keyless entry, remote tailgate release, and mud-and-snow rated tires.  xls adds premium cloth seats, power driver's seat, 315-watt sound system with six-disc cd, a 5-inch color lc display with time, temperature, compass and programmable function readings, crossbars for the roof rails, a cargo cover and chrome bumper caps. Mitsubishi vehicles tend to cry 'hey, look at me!' because mitsubishi is a little guy among big manufacturers, and to get noticed nowadays they have to jump up and down and shout. And the engineering basket can't carry the banner, because while there's nothing much to criticize about the endeavor's engineering, there's nothing much special about it either.    so the endeavor's body tries to get attention for the sake of getting attention. The marketing spin is that the aggressive styling attracts 'people who like to be noticed.' if the styling were particularly handsome or graceful, we wouldn't be so jaundiced. But it's no more than it aspires to be: aggressively different.  mitsubishi calls the design 'geomechanical,' or 'geometric shapes with a mechanical application.' but it's not a blend of geometric and mechanical, it's an abrupt meeting: the geometric shapes are all on the top half of the endeavor, and the mechanical application is on the bottom. It looks like they were designed for tractor tires, as the wheel wells seem to dwarf the standard 17-inch tires. They are mounted on either standard five-spoke or optional seven-spoke aluminum wheels, neither of which are memorable. The fenders are connected by a horizontal high beltline, with the man above the belt being significantly slimmer than the machine below it.  'bold' is the word mitsubishi uses to describe the front end, but it's not as bold as the endeavor's sides. There's no chrome or metal, just two body-colored horizontal ribs in openings on either side of a wide vertical center pillar with a big mitsubishi badge. The headlamp units are fairly ordinary, reflecting a missed opportunity for some drama. This grille section rides on a high bumper fascia which might be the part of endeavor that best fits mitsubishi's adjectives and design objectives. Mitsubishi's description, 'imposing intake cavities,' is a good one. Skipping highway stones might be worrisome.  the endeavor looks best from the rear. The back end is simple, smooth and classy—angular on a two-dimensional level, with the tailgate shaped into a subtle stretched hexagon by small taillights. Elegant describes the limited with body-colored bumpers, at least. It gives the endeavor an air of mechanical seriousness, if not a suggestion of fragility from low ground clearance.    finally, the roof rails are wide oblong tubular aluminum, neither easy to reach nor especially functional, at least not without the crossbars that come standard only with the xls and limited. The first claimed strength is styling, which is subjective and therefore not measurable. The second and third are interior features: cargo space and seating comfort. So let's compare.  cargo capacity behind the front seat is 76. 4 cubic feet for endeavor, while the highlander has 81. 4 cubic feet and the pilot 90. 3 cubic feet. The 60/40 rear seats fold totally flat with the touch of a finger, and, thanks partly to a wide track, the cargo area has enough length and width to fit a 4x8 sheet of plywood, although it rests on the small wheel humps. There are no less than 10 hooks on the floor and side panels so things can be secured with bungee cords or nets, and one power outlet. The temporary spare tire is mounted under the cargo floorboard, which is easy to raise; a full-sized spare is optional.  front legroom is good. For front legroom, the endeavor and pilot have 41. 4 inches, the highlander 40. 7; most other mid-sized suvs are in that range. The xls driver's seat with standard adjustable lumbar support is comfortable and well bolstered, but rather wide for aggressive cornering. The premium fabric is nice, and appears quite durable.  rear legroom is very good, with 38. 5 inches; the pilot's middle seat has 37. 0 inches, and the highlander has 36. 4. The rear seat is quite comfortable, and has a center armrest with two cupholders.  getting in and out is easy. Ingress and egress is especially good, with wide door openings. The step-in is low, which is one of the advantages to a car-based unibody frame, as opposed to the truck-based body-on-frame.  that word 'geomechanical' pops up again in mitsubishi's description of the endeavor interior design. What they say looks like a cascading waterfall, the vertical center of the instrument panel, we would describe as looking more like the top half of a robot, including a small rectangular lcd screen as eyes and protruding vents as shoulders. The panel background is finished in faux titanium, and the top of the dashboard is a rubbery-feeling matt black plastic. Metallic-colored trim is a trend right now.  functionally it's fine, except maybe for the confusing compass that appears in the lcd window on xls and limited models. The knobs and dials on the robot's belly are easy to push and turn. The instrument cluster is a unit of three gauges that are easy to read, lit at night in a moody ice blue. There's a new climate control system efficiently combining heat and air conditioning with one blower.  the small lcd screen also displays a menu of functions programmable by what mitsubishi calls etacs, or electric time and alarm control system, which works with the sws (smart wiring system) and can (control area network). But this seems a tenuous. CD Player✔ Climate Control✔ Air Conditioning✔ Sunroof/Moonroof✔ Aluminum Wheels✔ Alloy Wheels

2005 nissan altima review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New interior improves this roomy and powerful sedan. introductionthe nissan altima is the sportiest of the mid-size sedans. Nissan has redesigned the interior, addressing the biggest caveat with this car. In addition to its new interior, the 2005 nissan altima gets some mild styling enhancements and a slight boost to its powerful v6, already one of the best v6 engines on the market. A new high-performance altima se-r adds even more sports appeal.  the nissan altima boasts a bigger interior than the toyota camry, honda accord and most other mid-size sedans. The new interior is nicer and more convenient than last year's interior.  when ordered with its 250-horsepower v6, the nissan altima is one of the hottest cars in its class. It delivers stunning acceleration. Punch it in any gear and it takes off, with nimble handling and brakes to match all the thrust. Two engines are available. The 3. 5 se and 3. 5 sl feature a powerful 3. 5-liter v6, essentially the same engine used in the nissan 350z and maxima.  the base 2. 5 model 17,200) comes standard with power windows, a green-tinted solar glass windshield, power steering, tilt and telescoping steering wheel, fold down center armrests front and rear, a 60/40 split folding rear seat and an in-glass antenna. Stereo and air conditioning are not part of the base package, however. The base model comes with a five-speed manual transmission; an automatic transmission is not available.  the 2. 5 s 19,050) adds air conditioning, power mirrors, remote keyless entry with remote trunk lock, an eight-way adjustable driver's seat, cruise control, a six-speaker audio system, seatback pockets and a lock for the split rear seat. The convenience package 1,680) features alloy wheels, 8-way power driver's seat with lumbar support, leather-wrapped steering wheel, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, trip computer, dual illuminated vanity mirrors, speed-sensitive volume control, automatic headlights and a vehicle security system. The convenience plus package 2,500) adds a power glass sunroof with sunshade to the other goodies, while the premium convenience package 3,300) ups the ante with a bose audio system that includes a six-disc in-dash cd changer.  the 2. 5 sl 23,400) is the luxury altima. The only convenience option is the sunroof 850). For those who want all the goodies without the big engine, this is the car.  the 3. 5 sl 26,900) has the v6 and comes standard with the five-speed automatic. A new model for 2005, this is a very nice car, loaded with luxury features, and represents the top of the line.  the 3. 5 se 23,100) is the performance model, equipped with the v6, five-speed manual, 17-inch alloy wheels, wider, speed-rated tires, a performance-tuned suspension, fog lights, and dual chrome exhaust tips. The se is available with the automatic 23,750). A leather package 3,000) includes the leather upholstery, bose audio system, sunroof, heated front seats, and heated mirrors. The sport package plus 2,600) includes the sunroof, spoiler, bose premium audio, and xenon headlights. The leather sport package 3,900) combines the leather package with the spoiler and xenon headlights.  the new se-r 29,200) benefits from the changes wrought on all 2005 altimas, but also gets a 260-horsepower version of the 3. 5-liter v6, performance-tuned front struts and rear shocks, stiffer front and rear springs, and thicker front and rear stabilizer bars. The se-r also comes with 225/45r18 w-speed rated tires and 18-inch forged aluminum-alloy wheels. New front and rear fascias, compact fog lights, new rear spoiler and side-sill spoilers, and large dual exhaust finishers highlight the exterior; inside, the se-r gets sport leather seats, dark chrome trim, and a three-pod center-mounted gauge package.  safety features include dual-stage frontal airbags. Side-impact airbags for the front passengers are optional, however. Roof-mounted curtain airbags designed to provide head protection for front and rear passengers are also optional, but we recommend them as most side-impact fatalities are caused by head injuries. Also. walkaroundthe nissan altima is a big car by mid-size standards, bigger than the toyota camry and honda accord. Its wheels are pushed to the far corners of the car, giving it a long wheelbase and wide track for stability at high speeds. The long wheelbase leaves plenty of room for large doors and passengers as well.  styling revisions, though subtle, give the 2005 altima a more aggressive look. Cast more in the style of european sedans, the altima looks more like something from volkswagen or audi than honda or toyota. The hood has been redesigned, giving the 2005 altima a more athletic look, by suggesting it's packing a powerful engine. A new front fascia and smoked headlamps adds to the bold impression and a new grille looks more in keeping with the rest of the newest nissan lineup. Altima's grille is large by contemporary standards, but not the least bit awkward. Newly styled 16- and 17-inch wheels give the 2005 altima a sportier look.  its sloping roofline is reminiscent of a coupe. The high trunk lid is set off by bold round taillights, turn signals and backup lights set in a triangular-shaped cover.  the trunk has a large opening and low lift-over height. Offering 15. 6 cubic feet, the altima near the top of the mid-size class in trunk space. Flexibility is increased by the standard split-folding rear seat (with a lock on all but the base car). The trunk lid lifts on its own when popped with the remote key fob, and the gooseneck hinges that allow this action intrude minimally into the usable trunk space.  altima is assembled with a one-piece bodyside structure for more consistent build quality. Altima has gained on camry and accord in exterior build quality and nissan claims panel-fit accuracy within 1. 0 mm. The new interior is a vast improvement over that of last year's model.  interior improvements for the 2005 model year include a new instrument panel, a new center stack and a new center console, all much nicer than the previous model's. Seat materials, trim finishes, headliner and new chrome accents are an improvement over last year's materials.  the three-spoke steering wheel tilts and telescopes. The dashboard is set relatively low, with a three-gauge binnacle directly in front of the driver containing speedometer, tachometer, and water temperature and fuel gauges. Altima ranks near the top of the class in interior roominess. There's more front legroom here than in all but the largest vehicles on the road. The front seats are quite comfortable and large enough for larger bodies. Getting in and out of the altima is easy, thanks to wide doors and a slightly higher-than-average front seating position.  the same applies in back. The rear seats are supportive and comfortable, with good legroom and sufficient headroom. A 6-foot, 4-inch passenger can sit comfortably behind a 6-foot, 4-inch driver. Rear center passengers have a three-point seat belt with shoulder harness; when the center spot is empty, an armrest drops and presents cupholders. Getting in and out of the rear seats is easier in the altima than it is in many mid-size sedans. The long wheelbase and large doors make it less likely that a rear passenger will get dirty by dragging clothes across the fender well. driving impressionthe nissan altima is one. Altima also received some mild styling enhancements and a slight boost to its v6 for 2005. 2002 mercedes-benz c-class review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The c240 (yes we know, it should be called a c 260 because of the new larger engine, but the company chose to stick with a lower number) is a pretty sporty entry that's fun to drive, though it is neither quick nor fast.  the volume sedan model is the c320 with its 3. 2-liter v6 and automatic transmission. (a manual transmission is not available for the c320.)  a scant few months after the two sedans hit the showrooms, mercedes showed the smallest station wagon it has ever exported to the united states, the c320 wagon, with an especially sporty three-window wagon body style with a forward-canted rear roof pillar. Rated at 350 horsepower, it comes with a 6-speed manual transmission. What's more, the c230 coupe is a hatchback, the first such design in the company's history, offering a nearly unbeatable combination of price 24,950), utility (nearly 40 cubic feet of storage space with the rear seats folded down), and visual impact. walkaroundthe c-class is simply the boldest design of any of the small european cars, and the slickest in the entire mercedes family with a coefficient of drag of only 0. 27 for the sedan. While the sedan and wagon versions have a traditional mercedes horizontal bar grille flanked by huge headlamp assemblies that are part of the new look at mercedes, the c23 coupe uses the star-grille front end instead of the bar-grille, with wild twin-oval headlamps, a swooping roofline, and a functional rear spoiler at the short rear end that adds downforce on the rear tires at high speeds. The coupe was shortened seven inches overall compared to the sedan.  although the coupe is not as aerodynamic as the c-class sedan, 0. 29 to the sedan's 0. 27 coefficient of drag, it's still one of the slickest cars in the industry, and it looks twice as mean and twice as slick as the sedan, with nothing there that doesn't need to be there. The long coupe doors make for easy ingress/egress, especially to the rear seats. Nice touches include the turn signal repeaters built into the outside mirrors, and the extra pane of glass underneath the spoiler that adds more rearward vision. The standard ten-spoke alloy wheels are especially sporty.  options for the line include automatic transmission 1300), leather interior trim 1400), power seats 1225), bose audio system 610), the comand dashboard system with navigation and telephone 2080), headlamp washer and heated seats 820), a cd player/telephone package 1800), and on the coupe, a panorama roof with rain-sensing wipers 995). interiorthe indoor parts of the c-class family are at least as appealing as the outdoor parts. The instrument panel design, with its new graphics and deep hood, is shared among the coupe, sedan and wagon, with minor changes, and it's extremely easy to use and understand. The stalk controls all have a nice, beefy feel with positive detents. The coupe seats feature a release system that automatically slides the seat forward when the seatback is pulled forward, opening up the rear compartment for entry. The sedan and wagon versions have conventional reclining seats that don't need to fold forward.  rear seats in the c-class are far more generous in space and comfort than the previous c-class seats (we know; we owned two of them), and the interior in general has larger dimensions in almost every area. The seats in the hatchback coupe should be perfectly fine and comfortable for most of the population, but the rear roof slopes down quite a bit, restricting headroom 2. 2 inches less than the front seats. The figures on the specifications page (192 horsepower and 3400 pounds-feet of torque) don't sound all that exciting, but the power put out by this tried, tested and improved supercharged engine is impressive; it starts producing peak torque at about 2000 rpm and stays at 200 foot-pounds all the way to 5000 rpm. The supercharger is nearly transparent in its operation. The standard tilt and telescope steering column provides an extra measure of adjustability that some cars in this class don't even offer. The tires are modestly sized michelins, p205/55r-16, but they are relatively grippy and they are very quiet at highway speeds. A 17-inch wheel-and-tire package will be added to the option list later. All in all, really good fun to drive, and boy, did we get looks from other drivers. This thing really makes a fashion statement.  mercedes-benz puts as much effort into its braking systems as some makers put into their whole cars, and it shows immediately in the driving. The brakes are progressive in pedal feel, and enormously powerful in bad situations.  once a driver learns how to use the steering-wheel-mounted controls for the driver information, audio and. 2007 dodge caliber review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new compact boasts innovative design and features. introductiondodge has introduced a remarkable replacement for the neon. There's also a choice of front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, the latter making the caliber a capable winter vehicle. The caliber is relatively affordable. Its starting price is below last year's neon, and fuel economy is respectable, achieving 28/32 city/highway miles per gallon in its most frugal form, according to federal government estimates. At the other end of the scale, an srt4 version is expected in spring 2007 with a turbocharged engine generating 300 horsepower.  the front seats are comfortable, with lots of headroom, and there's a large amount of cargo space here. Packaging is functional, with folding rear seats that have an optional reclining adjustment and an optional fold-flat front passenger seat to make room for a ladder or more likely, a surfboard. A couple of innovative options, especially for a car in this price class, are an air conditioned compartment in the glove box to chill water bottles or sodas and a swing-down stereo speaker panel attached to the liftgate that converts the back end to a sound stage for beach parties or tailgating.  the caliber is no sports car, but we most enjoyed the mid-level sxt model with the 2. 0-liter engine and five-speed manual transmission.  dodge is gambling a huge chunk of change on the hope new car shoppers looking for value and function can be persuaded hatchbacks are acceptable again, that five-door, small wagons have a place in american garages. The first two are available with a five-speed manual or an automatic continuously variable transmission.  the se 13,425) comes with the 1. 8-liter engine and five-speed manual transmission. The 2. 0-liter engine is optional 100), and both engines are available with the cvt automatic 1000). Air conditioning is not standard, nor are power windows. The se comes with manual roll-up windows and manual outside mirrors.  options for the se are as extensive as the standard equipment is basic. The power equipment group 545) includes power windows, outside mirrors and keyless remote central locking. There are two uplevel stereos, one adding cassette and mp3 capability and six-disc cd changer 420), the other just mp3 and the six-disc changer 320). Two other audio options are available, sirius satellite radio 195), including a pre-paid, one-year subscription, and a speaker package called musicgate power 435) comprising a boston acoustics sound system with nine speakers. A trailer tow group 130) adds an engine oil cooler and a wiring harness.  the sxt 15,425) also comes standard with the 1. 8-liter engine and five-speed manual, with the 2. 0-liter engine and cvt optional, but the list of standard features expands dramatically. Seat heaters can be ordered for the cloth seats 250). Cruise control is available 250), as is a sunroof 750), and uconnect, a bluetooth, hands-free cell phone capability 275). A driver convenience group 400) adds a compass, an ambient temperature gauge, homelink, auto-dimming inside mirror and a tire pressure monitoring system. A security group 275) includes the cargo area cover, an alarm and an air filtration system. A sport package 645) includes fog lamps, 17-inch aluminum wheels and a sport appearance interior group with contrasting inserts on the cloth seats and color-keyed instrument bezels and gear indicator for the automatic transmission. Aluminum wheels are available 400). Audio options and other items listed above are also available.  the r/t 19,425) comes standard with the 2. 4-liter engine, the cvt, and all-wheel drive. Standard features include the sxt features, the sport appearance interior group, cruise control, leather-clad steering wheel with audio controls, cargo cover, a sport suspension with performance steering and p215/55r18 all-season performance tires on aluminum wheels. Massive headlights are notched into the leading corners of the front fenders. A pouting lower lip-like bumper separates the grille and headlights from a slimmer, lower air intake and (uplevel) fog lamps.  the side view shows strongly blistered fenders front and rear beneath a wedge-shaped beltline. The lower portions of the doors wear longitudinal moldings, again, body color or chrome highlighted, that look like a bi-level rocker panel but aren't, but that nevertheless minimize the caliber's height. Full-round door handles, either chrome-trimmed or body color, bridge scooped-out grip spaces.  the roofline arcs cleanly from its junction with the hood just aft of the front wheel well over the side door windows to pinch off at the tail end of the rear quarter glass. Topping this arc but stopping at the top of the backlight (rear windscreen) is an unbroken, thick strip of black molding the caliber's designers say is supposed to work with the arc and the truncated back end to impart a coupe look. We're not sure why that was important or that it necessarily succeeds, but it does buff up the caliber's side aspect.  the back end pulls from the magnum, too, with a steeply raked backlight beneath a roof-mounted spoiler and above a mostly upright lower liftgate, employing a hatchback style arguing against any comparisons with a traditional station wagon. A relatively short rear overhang and oversize taillight housings add credence to the argument. interiorstep inside the caliber and the dodge legacy is loud and clear. Gauges are large, round and gleefully legible. The center stack presents the stereo face and climate control panel in stark relief with functional knobs, buttons and switches and trimmed in matte metallic plastic or not-very-convincing wood grain.  the shift lever extends from the base of the stack; the notched gate on the cvt makes ratio selections intuitive, the manual gearbox less so, but not bad for a front-wheel-drive. The power point serves neither the cell phone holder nor a radar detector well; located at the extreme base of the center stack, it leaves cords either draped over the center console's cup holders or dangling down the dash between the instrument cluster and the center stack.  the mp3 player/cell phone holder flips up out of the front of the center console armrest and, while properly sized for an ipod or similarly shaped mp3 device, adapts best to candy bar-style cell phones. This eases climbing in and out.  the front seats are comfortable, but far from plush, with decently bolstered back cushions. Bottom cushions, or squabs in designer lingo, are more flat than sculpted and a bit short on thigh support. Front-seat headroom is impressive, topping the five-door mazda3 hatchback by almost two inches, the five-door ford focus zx5 hatchback by almost an inch. It falls short of the pontiac vibe and toyota matri.

2001 chevrolet tahoe review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Best in class and an ideal size. introductionchevrolet's tahoe seems at times the perfect size. And it more easily handles a trailer. Yet it's far more maneuverable than a suburban, important in crowded parking lots, underground garages, or when parallel parking.  on the road, it's smooth and stable, a rock. There's plenty of power and the brakes work well. Its cabin is comfortable and familiar, friendly and functional. Turn off the highway and the tahoe handles gravel, rugged two-tracks, mud, and snow. lineupthree models are available: base, ls, and lt.  the base model is a stripped-down vinyl-seat work truck sold in small quantities. Base 4x2 retails for $24,941, while 4x4 goes for $27,857. Custom cloth front seatsthese base models come equipped with the vortec 4800 v8.  most people opt for the ls and lt models, which come with the vortec 5300 v8. Sold as packages, ls adds $6,164 to the base model prices, while lt adds $10,638 to the bottom line.  tahoe 2wd ls 31,105) and 4wd ls 34,021) come with a comfortable cloth interior and most of the features most of us want.  tahoe 2wd lt 35,579) and lt 4x4 38,495) come loaded with leather upholstery, power seats, premium ride suspension, onstar driver assistance, automatic climate control, and other features.  also available is a z71 model with a specially tuned off-road suspension with special shocks and jounce bumpers, skid plates, a locking rear differential, and a roof rack with lights.  other options include a power sliding sunroof package 1095) with homelink and the autoride suspension 700) with variable shock dampening. walkaroundconservative styling means the tahoe doesn't stand out, but it is an attractive truck. It shares much in common with the suburban and the silverado pickup. Pull door handles are easy to use.  at the rear, there's a choice of a traditional hatch with a flip-up window or panel doors, also known as barn doors or cargo doors. Choosing between them is a matter of lifestyle and personal preference. Cargo doors are standard on the base tahoe and optional on the ls and lt models; cargo doors are more convenient when towing and for other truck chores, and they make it easier to control a dog. The traditional hatch is made of aluminum for light weight; being able to open just the glass is often more convenient when loading groceries or outdoor gear, especially since it can be operated with the keyless remote. The automatic locking feature can be turned off by the dealer. interiortahoe's interior is comfortable, user-friendly, and attractive. Step-in height is lower than it is with pre-2000 models, making it easier to climb in and out. Controls are mounted within easy reach. Visibility is very good through big windows.  it's comfortable up front with nice cloth or leather seats, well-designed switchgear, and map lights that can be aimed. The cupholders are nicely designed and there's a place for a sunglasses case or wallet. Three power outlets in front and one in back deliver electricity for accessories.  it's also quite comfortable in the second row. Separate rear audio and heating and air conditioning controls are available. A pair of map lights flanks each dome light on the second and third row, a great feature when traveling or accessing gear.  folding the second-row seats down provides enormous cargo capacity, useful for outdoor activities and home-improvement weekends. Getting in and out of the third row isn't easy, however. And once back there, it's uncomfortable for an adult. The suburban is far more practical than the tahoe for carrying six or seven people on a regular basis.  in terms of flexibility, however, the tahoe's third-row seats comprise one of the best designs in the business. They can be quickly folded and flipped out of they way. Better yet, they're easy to remove: just fold down, flip up, grab the release handle, and roll them out on their wheels. They're not light, but one person can remove each of the two seats. Storing them in the garage is a good idea as it opens up more cargo space. This leaves room for five people and lots of cargo. There's plenty of room back there for a big dog. Reinstalling the third-row seats is a snap. driving impressionthe tahoe rides smoothly and it's stable and comfortable at higher speeds. It handles bumpy roads well. The z71 package seems to improve the ride quality on gravel and washboard surfaces.  a five-link independent rear suspension provides better ride and handling than the ford expedition. The front suspension is conventional in design, except for the springs. To save space, the tahoe uses torsion bars instead of coil springs. The tahoe's conventional ladder frame is fully boxed in the mid-section for maximum rigidity, while the front and rear portions are shaped by the same hydro-forming technique used to make corvette frames. This design is a key to the tahoe's excellent ride and handling. At the very front of the frame is a section that is designed to crush and absorb impacts in a crash.  optional premium ride self-leveling rear shocks 366) use hydraulics to help maintain trim height for better handling when hauling heavy cargo or pulling a trailer. Better is the optional autoride suspension 700), which electronically controls rear air shocks to provide real-time suspension damping. Press a button and gm's tow/haul mode, standard on these new suvs, holds the transmission in gear longer and shifts more abruptly to keep the transmission cooler.  the recirculating-ball steering provides good control and feedback, even if it falls short of the rack-and-pinion steering found on the ford explorer. Tahoe's power steering system is designed for durability by operating at a lower temperature range.  tahoe is relatively easy to park. With its shorter wheelbase, shorter rear overhang and taller ground clearance, the tahoe traverses gullies and other rugged terrain where the suburban scrapes bottom. Likewise, the tahoe is shorter and more maneuverable than the ford expedition. Even though the tahoe is an inch wider than the expedition, i find it easier to judge the distance between the tahoe's right front corner and a tree. We towed a heavily laden horse trailer without trailer brakes connected and were impressed with its braking ability. A dynamic proportioning system continuously balances the front and rear brakes for maximum braking without activating the abs.  chevy's small-block overhead-valve v8s are excellent. They rival competitors' overhead-cam engines for smoothness and efficiency, and deliver strong torque for towing. The 4. 8-liter version cranks out 275 horsepower, which is 20 more than the old 5. 7-liter motor. At the same time, it is quite efficient; the 2wd, 4. 8-liter version, for example, earns 20 mpg on the epa's highway mileage test. It delivers strong acceleration performance and burns regular unleaded fuel; the 5. 3-liter engine earns an epa-estimated 14/17 mpg city/highway.  the tahoe doesn't offer the off-road capability of a jeep grand cherokee, toyota land cruiser, or land rover discovery. The tahoe will, however, get to most of the places most of us want to go. Press the auto 4wd button for inconsistent road conditions. Power will only be sent to the rear wheels when there's good grip, but any loss of traction will cause power to be directed to the front wheels. This works well when patches of snow and ice are on the road. I like using auto 4wd on gravel roads where it seems to offer the best handling balance. Press the. summarychevrolet's tahoe makes a lot of sense for someone who wants a big sport-utility, but doesn't want to manhandle a suburban every day. We think the tahoe delivers a better driving experience than the ford expedition and some of its cargo-carrying ergonomics seem to have the edge. For many people, it's the ideal suv. model lineup2wd base 24,941); 2wd ls 31,105); 2wd lt 35,579); 4wd base 27,857); 4wd ls 34,021); 4wd lt 38,495). assembled injanesville, wisconsin. options as testedt. 2004 toyota matrix review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Practical and affordable, sporty and stylish. introductionthe toyota matrix is part car, part wagon, part minivan, part suv. Toyota even calls it a cuv for compact utility vehicle. We're not sure whether the acronym will catch on, but the matrix appears to have caught on. Matrix was introduced in 2002 as a 2003 model, and toyota sold nearly 30,000 of the compact wagons in the first half of the 2003 calendar year. Toyota claims the matrix combines the style and performance of a sports car with the functionality of an suv and the affordability of a compact sedan. Matrix is practical, with a big cargo area that can be expanded by folding down the rear seats. And it's certainly stylish.  while the high-performance xrs model has drawn some attention with its high-revving 180-horsepower engine, we preferred the 130-horsepower models for their more relaxed, more pleasant demeanor. lineuptoyota matrix is available in three trim lines: the standard matrix, xr, and xrs. Two engines are available. A wider range of optional equipment is available for the xr as well. Extra value package 1 270) includes cruise control, fog lamps, and front and rear spoilers. To this, extra value package 2 880) adds 16-inch alloy wheels and power moonroof.  a five-speed manual transmission is standard on matrix and matrix xr. Xrs is available only with front-wheel drive and a six-speed manual transmission. It comes with 16-inch alloy wheels and anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution. The matrix also shares much in common with the pontiac vibe. Gm and toyota developed the vehicles jointly, saving money for both companies and allowing each to offer the vehicles at an affordable price. Matrix and vibe do not look alike, however, as their styling was designed independently by toyota and pontiac.  the matrix is 3 inches taller but 8 inches shorter in length than a toyota corolla. It uses the same wheelbase but a wider track. These dimensions give the matrix a unique stance. It reminds us somewhat of the ford focus hatchback, which is slightly smaller. It is also similar in size to the chrysler pt cruiser, although the matrix has slightly less interior storage capacity due to its lower roofline.  and it's mainly the roofline that draws the eye. In a reverse wedge shape, the roof slopes down at the back while the belt line along the lower edge of the side windows slopes up, creating a sleek wedge shape to the windows.  the tailgate opens up just as in an suv or minivan, and the frameless window can be opened separately for quick access.  the front of the car has a purposeful looking nose with a relatively high hood line accentuated by a big grille. Engine cooling is achieved through a large aperture under the front bumper which features two small foglights.  a wide track, along with generous tires fill the wheel wells nicely, helping give the matrix an aggressive look. All in all it's a car that looks substantial despite its relatively small size. interiorsitting in a toyota matrix is somewhat like sitting in an suv, with upright seating and a commanding view of the road ahead.  the driver will find that the cockpit is unlike that of other toyota cars. The gauges glow red at all times, even during the daytime, as insufficient ambient light reaches them. Chrome rims accentuate each pod and fake brushed aluminum trim is used to surround switches on the dashboard and door panels.  the combined radio and cd player sits directly to the right of the instrument pods, while the heating and ventilation controls are immediately below. If the radio buttons and the general un-toyota appearance of the trim seems familiar that's because the interior is all but identical to the pontiac vibe, even down to the american delco radio.  the shifter is also right there, just a few inches from the steering wheel. It's conveniently located more than a foot off the floor in a position that's become fashionable in high-performance rally cars as well as the lexus rx, a luxury suv.  there's 15 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats. The rear seat is split 60/40 and pressing a button flips the seat down easily to provide a completely flat floor capable of holding 53 cubic feet of cargo. The cargo floor is finished in a hard ribbed plastic designed to offer easy cleanup. An xr 4wd model we drove came with a carpeted cargo mat 56) that did a much better job of keeping cargo from sliding around, however. There are several other tie-downs positioned along the sides. Storage compartments and cargo nets provide owners with maximum utility. All of this makes the interior as versatile as any station wagon and better than most suvs. Shorter passengers sitting in the rear seats might find the view slightly claustrophobic due to the small side windows.  one cool feature is the available 115-volt power outlet located in the front dashboard alongside a regular 12-volt outlet. It's a low-power ac plug suitable for powering a laptop computer, but it isn't capable of running power tools. (toyota is working on that, however.). driving impressiondespite its boxy looks there is no denying that the toyota matrix is a sporty car.  shifting the manual transmission is easy. Although it might seem that the upright seating position and the high mounted gearshift would take some getting used to, it did not. Shifts are smooth and the standard engine revs nicely. Although the matrix is quite light it's not as fast as expected as the base engine only delivers 130 horsepower. Judicious use of the gears allows one to have fun, however. There's plenty of pep when driving around town, even with the automatic transmission. Equipped with the five-speed manual, the matrix gets an epa-estimated 29/35 mpg city/highway.  steering is precise and even if the center of gravity is relatively high there is little body roll. In fact the matrix feels just like any other small sporty car. That's not surprising as it uses many components straight from the sporty toyota celica.  in keeping with the car's sporty attributes, the brakes are effective.  we also drove the sporty xrs with the 180-horsepower engine. The power increase comes from variable valve timing and lift, which comes into play between 6000 rpm and the 8400-rpm redline. The six-speed gearbox ratios are the same as those used in the celica, but the matrix uses taller tires effectively giving it taller gear ratios. We quickly grew tired of the high-revving 180-horsepower xrs, however. We found that the xrs was not nearly as pleasant as the xr. With more weight (185 pounds more) and slightly less power than the front-drive models plus the friction from the all-wheel-drive system, the 4wd models do not accelerate as quickly as 2wd models. It's still peppy, however, and the all-wheel provides superior traction on snow, ice, and slippery pavement. Matrix xr 4wd autom. 2009 kia rio review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Inexpensive, fuel-efficient, practical, enjoyable. introductionthe kia rio is a fuel-efficient subcompact with a roomy cabin and agile handling. Rio comes standard with six airbags, a safety feature normally associated with expensive luxury cars, not subcompacts. Tires are 175/70r14 on 14-inch steel rims. There's no air conditioning or power steering. It comes with a sporty mesh fabric on the seats, an eight-way adjustable driver's seat with a fold-down armrest, tachometer, rear defroster, dual 12v power outlets and a convenient shopping bag hook on the back of the front passenger seat. Carpeted floor mats 95) and a rear spoiler 300) are the only options.  the rio lx sedan 13,225) comes with air conditioning, power steering, tilt steering column, and a 60/40-split folding rear seat. Tires upgrade to 185/65r14 with full wheel covers. The lx sedan comes with the manual or an automatic transmission 14,075). A power package 600) includes power windows, power door locks with keyless remote, power heated outside mirrors, tweeter speakers, and steering wheel-mounted audio controls. The rio sx sedan 14,875) and rio5 sx 15,125) are also available with the automatic. Optional are 16-inch wheels with 205/45r16 tires 200). Otherwise, sx models offer the same options as the lx.  safety features for all models include front seatbelt pretensioners along with six airbags: dual frontal, front seat side-impact and full-coverage side-impact curtain. Abs is optional. walkaroundthere is nothing wimpy looking about either of the kia rio models. Both share a solidly handsome front end with a strong nose and big headlights that give the car a purposeful appearance. The subtle bevel below the big side windows wraps neatly around the trunk, giving the rio more the look of a european sports sedan than a korean econobox.  all models come with hefty black bodyside moldings that do not detract too badly, as they align nicely with the wraparound edges of the front and rear bumpers. The fender flares actually look a shade too big on the base and lx models, which have skinnier tires. The flares fill out much better on the sx with its lower-profile tires and 15-inch wheels.  despite significantly more carrying capacity (and identical passenger room), the rio5 hatchback is 8. 8 inches shorter than the sedan; for the record, it's an inch and a quarter shorter than even the hyundai accent coupe. We think that gives the rio5 a trim and sporty look. The rio5 looks taller than the rio sedan but it is actually the same overall height. It's a couple of inches lower in height than the scion xd or honda fit, and a bit lower than the chevrolet aveo.  the rear of the rio5 is distinctive, with backup lights that wrap around the taillights and almost look like part of the body. The c-pillar curves down to the taillights, and the tailgate has full width glass, making the rear view more attractive than on many hatchbacks.  the kia rio is based on the same platform as the hyundai accent. interiorthe kia rio is a roomy car. At 92. 2 cubic feet, the subcompact rio's total passenger volume is comparable to that of the two most popular compacts, the honda civic (90. 9) and toyota corolla (92. 0).  the seats are on the soft side and don't offer the lateral support we'd expect on a sports sedan. Below the radio, three big knobs for the climate controls are mounted on a bulge in the center stack that brings them closer to the driver's hands. A chrome kia logo brightens the center of the steering wheel hub.  sporty trim makes the sx models nicer and more appealing to driving enthusiasts. Metal pedals and a leather-wrapped steering wheel and gearshift knob add tactile as well as visual excitement, while matching red stitching on the steering wheel, shift boot, and seat bolsters helps tie the whole interior together as a cohesive whole. A slot in the center stack holds parking passes or toll tickets.  cargo capacity is increased via a folding rear seatback with a 60/40 split for added versatility. The rio5 has a total cargo carrying a capacity of almost 50 cubic feet with the back seats folded down, substantially more than in other hatchbacks in this class. Even with the rear seats up for passengers, the rio5 has an impressive 15. 8 cubic feet of cargo space. The sedan's trunk measures 11. 9 cubic feet, which is not bad for the class. driving impressionwe've driven most versions of the kia rio and are impressed with it.  we spent time in an lx automatic sedan and a rio5 sx manual. We enjoyed shifting the manual as it definitely makes for a more sporty experience. However, the lx with the automatic transmission was no slouch. Cars in this class traditionally suffer a big performance and fuel economy hit with an automatic, but the rio confirms that modern transmissions have largely addressed these deficiencies.  the automatic rates slightly higher on the highway, according to the epa, with 35 mpg compared with the manual's 33 mpg. There's nothing exceptional about rio's macpherson strut front suspension or twist-beam rear axle, but kia designed them for long wheel travel, a characteristic long favored by european automakers for combining a comfortable ride with responsive handling. The rio is far from being a sporty car, but the sx handled nimbly without too much body lean or sloppy motion. The lx, with its skinner 14-inch tires, was not quite as secure, though most drivers will not complain.  the power steering, which stiffens up as the engine speed increases, felt taught with just the right amount of feel dialed in. We did not try a base model, which comes without power steering.  standard-issue brakes are 10. 1-inch discs up front and 8. 0-inch drums in the rear. That's a good upgrade and we strongly recommend it. We found the rio5 sx the most enjoyable, with its combination of hatchback versatility and sporty and luxury touches. All rios come with a comprehensive set of passive safety features; even the base model boasts six airbags. All models get kia's generous five-year/60,000-mile warranty coupled with a 10-year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty.  newcartestdrive. 2007 chevrolet impala review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Upgrades improve this recently redesigned sedan. introductionthe chevrolet impala is a comfortable and convenient car, practical and enjoyable to drive. We find its neat, clean lines pleasing to the eye. Its styling looks fresh and it is. The impala benefits from its recent redesign for 2006.  several upgrades and refinements for 2007 make for a better car: the available 3. 9-liter v6 gets gm's active fuel management system, which idles cylinders at certain times for improved fuel economy. A tire-pressure monitor comes standard. Onstar comes standard and has been upgraded for 2007, offering the new turn-by-turn navigation service. And onstar will automatically communicate the nature and severity of a crash as well as its location to the 911 centers.  the impala is a big car. It's generally classified as a mid-size sedan, though it's large for that class, and nearly a full-size. The front and back seats are roomy, though not inordinately so given the size of this car, and getting in and out of the car is easy. And it has a healthy cargo capacity. It has a huge trunk and flip-and-fold back seats that present holding wells for groceries or a flat cargo floor that expands the trunk for long items.  it's very stable on the open road, a nice cruiser. There's lots of low-end torque from the larger of the two available v6 engines, the 3. 9-liter v6. Step on the gas and it goes. And it handles well, in fact surprisingly well given its size.  several models are available, ranging from strong, reliable, fuel-efficient family sedan to sleek and powerful performance car. The mid-level impala lt probably best exemplifies the model line. We like the lt with the optional 3. 9-liter v6 engine, which gets gm's active fuel management system for 2007, which improves real-world fuel economy. The ltz adds leather and other convenience features. Anti-lock brakes are optional 600). The flip & fold-flat rear seats 275) are available. Leather seating surfaces are optional 1,125), which comes with heated front seats and a six-way power passenger seat. A flex-fuel version of the v6 can burn e85 ethanol; it's standard in some states, optional in others.  lt 21,440) upgrades to dual-zone air conditioning, bucket seats with six-way power for the driver, abs, traction control, dual exhaust, fog lights, 16-inch aluminum wheels, remote starter, and interior power outlets. The standard engine is the 3. 5-liter v6. The ss comes with 18-inch wheels and tires, a performance suspension, and leather-appointed seats.  for 2007, xm satellite radio is standard on ss; optional on ls, lt and ltz.  safety features that come standard on all impalas include dual front smart air bags and side-curtain roof-mounted air bags for front- and rear-seat passengers. All but the base ls model come standard with anti-lock brakes (abs) and traction control. walkaroundthe chevrolet impala presents a clean, neat, pleasing design that's not so homogenized as to be boring. It's an attractive car.  launched as a 2006 model, the design features smooth lines. The big headlamps have a premium, jeweled appearance with three independent lighting units and are smoothly integrated into the front end. The tail lights are nicely integrated as well. Flat-blade windshield wipers provide consistent pressure on the glass, which helps eliminate streaking and wind noise.  the ls, lt and ltz are distinguished by exterior trim but share one front end design, while the ss sports a completely different design that includes a dual-split grille with ss-signature black-diamond crosshatch pattern. The impala ss also features corvette-inspired bright exhaust tips. A rear spoiler is standard on ltz and ss models, and is available on lt. interiorthe impala has a lot going for it inside as well. The cabin was completely redesigned for 2006 and, overall, we found it comfortable.  the standard seats have firmer cushions and increased lumbar support than previous models. We didn't find the ss seats particularly comfortable or supportive, however, with too much lumbar support and not enough side bolstering to retain the upper body in corners. Optional leather-covered seating has a new style of seams around the perimeter and french seams on the center sections.  a twin-brow instrument panel wraps around into the doors. Impala ls, lt and ltz models have wood trim, with brushed silver trim optional. The ss comes standard with unique metallic trim panels, with wood as an option. We found the instrument panel pleasing to the eye, colorful, entertaining and easy to use, with a nice all-of-a-piece unity and style to it. Interior materials are at least one grade better than the usual chevrolet stuff.  the dual-zone climate control system that comes on all but the base ls model is a snap to use, with large, round control knobs and good markings. It can support up to a 12-degree temperature difference side to side. The optional remote engine start system comes with a 200-foot operating range and automatic climate pre-conditioning to warm or cool the interior. The glovebox is large enough to actually hold stuff.  a new family of audio systems features radios compatible with generation 7. 0 onstar. The base audio system includes am/fm/cd and six speakers. An optional mp3/cd-radio is configured for xm satellite radio, with a two-line, 32-character display and the capability to select freely between am, fm and xm. Setting these presets is as easy as holding the button down. A big round knob in the center allows quick volume adjustments. Too many radios nowadays are too complex or have tiny buttons difficult to operate underway. More of them should be like gm's radios. It's sophisticated yet easy to operate. The optional icdx radio adds an in-dash six-cd changer. All radios include a standard auxiliary input jack for external devices such as an ipod or remote cassette player.  the back seat is roomy and comfortable for two adults or three kids, but not three adults. The forward-flipping rear seat cushions reveal a storage tub underneath that can contain spills or transport a variety of items. The tub also serves as a covered storage area beneath the seat with cushions down; and exposes convenient grocery bag hooks when the cushions are flipped forward. A generous pass-through from the trunk can be created by flipping the seat bottoms forward and the seat backs flat.  the trunk is larger than that of most mid-size cars, at 18. 6 cubic feet, and a huge trunk opening makes loading easier. driving impressionthe chevrolet impala features a new generation of v6 engines. We found them to be smooth and quiet if not bristling with power. They feature variable valve timing, which changes the orientation of the camshaft, automatically adjusting the timing of the intake and exhaust valves for better performance, economy, and emissions.  the 3. 5-liter v6 (standard on ls and lt) generates 211 horsepower and 214 pound-feet of torque. We haven't seen epa fuel economy estimates, but we expect an impala with this engine to earn fuel ratings of about 19/29 mpg city/highway.  the 3. 9-liter v6 (optional on lt, standard on ltz) produces 233 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque. It adds a variable-length intake system to variable valve timing. New for 2007 is active fuel management, electronic software that shuts off three cylinders when full power is not needed. Chevrolet says active fuel management improves fuel economy by up to 8 percent in certain driving situations. Chevrolet has applied this technology before to v8s, but this is its first appearance on a v6.

2005 nissan maxima review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Quick, stylish and luxurious. introductionthe nissan maxima is a quick and stylish premium mid-size sedan. It coddles its driver with refinement and dazzles with luxury gadgets.  now that the nissan altima has assumed the role of a roomy mid-size sedan, the maxima has moved up-market to a premium position. The maxima has become a more specialized product and makes no apologies for what it can't do: it's not ideal for families, it looks weird from some angles, and it's not significantly quicker than the altima. And that's just fine by us.  we like the maxima's unique, highly styled personality, and we like its focus on performance. The sporty maxima se rides smoothly and quietly, while the more luxurious maxima sl rides more softly. Cruising on the highway is effortless. Nissan's 265-horsepower v6 delivers responsive performance for quick passes.  maxima's interior is innovative and comfortable with seats that are supportive and luxurious. The interesting skyview roof, a glass panel running lengthwise over the front and rear seats, is the sort of feature associated with futuristic concept cars. Also interesting are the available rear bucket seats. Together, these features make back-seat riders feel like full-fledged adult passengers.  safety has been enhanced for 2005. Front-seat passengers benefit from nissan's advanced air bag system as standard equipment. It comes in two distinct flavors: the 3. 5 se is aimed at the driving enthusiast, while the 3. 5 sl is more luxuriously equipped.  se 27,200) comes with a choice of six-speed manual transmission or five-speed automatic (for the same price). Se comes with a sports suspension and 18-inch wheels and tires. Traction control comes standard.  sl 29,450) comes standard with the five-speed automatic, a softer suspension and 17-inch wheels and tires. Leather upholstery, heated seats, xenon hid headlamps, a premium eight-speaker bose stereo, and conveniences that are optional on the se are all standard on the sl. Sl also features the skyview roof. Woodgrain trim replaces the se's metallic interior accents.  options include a dvd navigation system with seven-inch color lcd display 2,000); xm or sirius satellite radio 400); vehicle dynamic control 600). A power glass sunroof 900) replaces the skyview roof with a conventional power-opening glass sunroof.  the elite package for the se 4,600) and sl 1,750) replaces the rear bench seat into two heated bucket seats with the center console extending the full length of the interior; the package includes everything from the driver preferred package, a power rear sunshade with front and rear controls, auto up/down rear windows, and an extra rear 12v power outlet.  se can be upgraded to sl levels of equipment. It's aerodynamic and modern and yet architecturally art deco, like some flash gordon fantasy of yesterday's tomorrow.  this is especially true at the front end, where a rounded-rectangle texture (anyone remember the '58 buick?) fills in the twin nostrils in nissan's signature grille, split by a dark chrome medallion at the center. The aerodynamically integrated headlight clusters wrap over the top and around at the sides.  big, round fender openings accented by flattened wheel lips pay homage to enormous alloy wheels: 18-inch, six-spoke units on the se, with 17-inch, seven-spoke wheels on the sl. The relatively open wheel design shows off the brake calipers nicely, so for 2005 they are painted black.  the maxima's rear roof slopes into the trunk lid with buttresses; and two large triangular taillight clusters, like the headlights, wrap around to the sides of the car.  maxima's bold design innovations include the skyview roof, a glass panel running lengthwise over the front and rear seats. interiorthe interior of the maxima is innovative and comfortable. The seats in the sl are firm yet pillowy, wide without a lot of side bolstering. In front of the driver are three small gauges set in their own pod, like those on a motorcycle.  we like the details of the maxima's interior, specifically the light colors and the proximity of the switches and controls to the driver. However, the labels for the climate and audio controls is too small to be easily read, and it seems like a lot of buttons for the audio system and trip computer. The display is hard to read in bright sunlight with polarized sunglasses. Still, we didn't care for the large, flat splash of trim on the center stack, neither the titanium-colored plastic in the se nor the faux wood on the sl. It seems like wasted space. Nissan says it found a lot of people rarely open their sunroofs. Satellite radio can be great companion on long trips, delivering cd-quality sound nearly everywhere. Finding stations is easy with rds (radio data system), which clearly identifies programming on the radio's display.  three cargo nets are provided in the trunk and work better than most for holding down a load of groceries. driving impressionthe nissan maxima se rides smoothly and quietly, even on bad pavement. Both models handled bumps well, a benefit of the maxima's independent multi-link rear suspension. The se feels more connected to the road than the sl.  cruising on the highway is effortless. The 3. 5-liter v6 develops 265 horsepower and pulls strongly in passing situations. Both the six-speed manual and the five-speed automatic transmissions are well-matched to the smoothly revving 3. 5-liter v6. The engine has such a broad power band that the maxima is happy being either a high-revving hard-charger or a boulevard loafer. The six-speed manual shifter feels tall and has a lot of extra movement when compared to that of the nissan 350z. Clutch pedal travel is also notably long. That means manual-shift devotees will be doing a lot of aerobics while they drive. Nissan expects fewer than 10 percent of maximas will be sold with the manual gearbox.  we drove the maxima quickly on twisty canyon roads around mount palomar in southern california. Its limits are very high, but it feels noticeably bigger and more ponderous than the lighter altima. The steering is accurate, though it seems light and slow. Body roll is minimal, but turn-in is slow and the maxima feels prone to understeer initially. Accelerating out of corners, there's no wheelspin but there is some torque steer, a slight tugging sensation at the steering wheel. summarythe nissan maxima has become more indulgently luxurious.
