2007 nissan maxima review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. introductionfuture historians will record that, in the summer of 2006, astronomers revoked pluto's status as a planet, and nissan reeled in the spacey styling of the maxima, bringing it down a little closer to earth-car standard. Those same historians will also render a verdict whether either decision was a good one. Right now we're might be too close to these events to tell, but we're thinking the styling changes to the 2007 nissan maxima are a good thing. And we still like to think of pluto as a planet. In fact, all of the body work has been restyled. The 2007 maxima gets new headlamps, new taillamps, and redesigned fenders, rocker panels, rear spoiler, and hood. The cabin gets a new instrument cluster and center dash for 2007, making for easier, more intuitive operation.  underneath, a continuously variable transmission, or cvt, replaces the more traditional five-speed automatic for smoother, more efficient operation. Nissan excels in this technology and we found the maxima's transmission responsive.  the nissan maxima fills a niche for aficionados who appreciate something different. The maxima is more focused on personal luxury and performance. Either way, cruising on the highway is effortless with nissan's wonderful 255-hp v6 engine. For 2007, both the maxima se and sl come standard with a continuously variable automatic transmission, which translates to smooth, efficient power. Gone is the available six-speed manual, which is fine because we didn't care for it.  both the maxima sl and se models abound with luxury features. The re-styled 2007 cabin is innovative and comfortable with supportive, luxurious seats. Surviving the 2007 revision is maxima's daring skyview roof, a narrow glass panel running lengthwise over the front and rear seats. It's the sort of feature associated with futuristic concept cars. Also interesting are the available rear bucket seats, a feature seen primarily on show cars or as an option on high-end luxury models.  together, the rear bucket seats and skyview roof make back-seat riders feel more like first-class passengers and less like coach-class cattle. The only transmission available is a continuously variable automatic (cvt). The se also comes with a sports suspension, traction control, and 18-inch wheels and tires.  the sl 30,300) upgrades with leather upholstery, woodgrain interior trim, heated seats, xenon hid headlamps, a premium eight-speaker bose stereo, and other conveniences that are optional on the se. The sl rides on a softer suspension with 17-inch wheels and tires.  the skyview roof comes standard on both se and sl. The se driver preferred package 3,750) combines the sensory package with the contents of the sl driver preferred package described above.  the elite package, available for both the se 4,700) and sl 1,950), replaces the rear bench seat with two heated bucket seats and a center console extending the full length of the interior. This option includes everything from the driver preferred packages, plus a power rear sunshade with front and rear controls, auto up/down rear windows, and an extra rear 12-volt power outlet. Options for se and sl include a dvd navigation system with seven-inch color lcd display 1,800); xm or sirius satellite radio 350); vehicle dynamic control 600), and a bluetooth hands-free phone system 300).  safety features that come standard include the advanced air bag system with dual-stage front supplemental air bags, front-seat side-impact air bags for chest protection, and roof-mounted curtain side-impact air bags for front and rear outboard occupant head protection; front-seat active head restraints; and front seat belts with adjustable upper anchors, pretensioners and load limiters. A sophisticated traction control system and a tire-pressure monitor come standard. An electronic stability program called vdc (vehicle dynamic control) is optional. walkaroundthe nissan maxima has been re-styled, and cast in a slightly more conservative mold.  the change is most apparent up front. The new grille is shaped similarly to the old one (and to the altima's). But the former, '58 buick-inspired texture of individual chromed studs has been replace by three horizontal, charcoal-colored slats; and the bold, dark-chrome center medallion has evolved into a simple central bulge. The full-width lower bumper opening that formerly stretched from foglight to foglight has been replaced with three smaller, albeit taller, openings. The hood and headlights are new, too, and also a bit more conventional in appearance than before, although the new headlights now incorporate built-in cornering lights.  the remainder of maxima's exterior is less radically changed. Big, round fender openings still pay homage to enormous alloy wheels; although the side sills are now more aggressive, and the wheel lips themselves less flattened and chiseled. Both the 17 and 18-inch wheels are now seven-spoke designs. The rear roof still slopes into the trunk lid, flanked by buttress-like sail panels. Large triangular taillight clusters, like the headlights, wrap around to the sides of the car. Nissan says the new design is more intuitive, enhancing the 'human machine interface.'  the first thing we noticed is that the new center stack looks more friendly, less hard-edged than the old one. In models without the navigation system, a dot-matrix screen displays hvac, audio and trip computer functions in one central location. With navigation, this is replaced by a seven-inch lcd screen.  simulated leather door panels replace fabric surfaces on models with leather-appointed seats, and integrated chromed accents have been added to the transmission shift lever plate and door panels. Brushed aluminum trim accents the se, while a new wood tone trim appears in the sl.  the seats in the sl look nice and feel firm yet pillowy, supportive and luxurious at the same time. They were already great last year, and now nissan has added more shoulder bolstering. The sliding center armrest has also been redesigned to improve comfort and convenience.  in front of the driver are three small gauges set in their own pod, like those on a motorcycle, with updated graphics for 2007 that are easier to read. The skyview window does not open, but nissan says it found a lot of people rarely open their sunroofs. Satellite radio can be great companion on long trips, delivering cd-quality sound nearly everywhere. Not having to change stations on a cross-country trip. 2004 bmw x5 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Freshened styling and a new 4. 8is model. introductionothers have followed, but the bmw x5 invented a class. As bmw's 3 series defines the sport sedan, the x5 defines an expanding group of big, powerful suvs that shine for their on-pavement agility and lightning acceleration, with an emphasis on luxury appointments. Climb out of a truck-based luxury suv like the cadillac escalade, and the x5 feels as capable on the road as the big bmw 7 series sedan (even though it isn't).  improvements for 2004 are more extensive than any since the x5 was introduced five years ago. And a new high-performance 4. 8is model has been added to the lineup.  logic? The x5 is 2. 5 tons of speed, comfort and prestige. It's quicker away from traffic lights than most cars, and capable of nearly 150 mph, though we certainly don't recommend driving a vehicle this tall that fast. Its steering is precise and it's exceptionally stable at supra-legal speeds. Massive tires contribute to impressive cornering grip and stopping power. A big v8 delivers the ultimate x5 thrill, but it's also available with an outstanding six-cylinder.  that trademark bmw twin-kidney grille indicates its owner is successful. It also indicates bmw's reputation for quality and driving excitement. Moreover, the x5 delivers most of the attributes that made suvs popular in the first place. It works well in foul weather and easily negotiates muddy trails. It looks tough and polished at the same time.  now let's get back to logic. Bmw says the x5 is designed for all roads, meaning superhighways, graded gravel or logging trails. In fact, the x5 is not capable off road, not when measured against sport-utilities that are capable. Though it handles well for an suv, its weight and height simply won't allow it the quick transient response of a sport sedan or sport wagon in the same price range. Compared to other bmws, the x5 is not the ultimate driving machine, and its fuel mileage is poor in comparison. It also costs more than some comparably equipped, very good luxury suvs.  for 2004, the x5's look has been freshened, with a redesigned front end, new taillights and new wheel designs. Mechanically, both manual and automatic transmissions have been upgraded to six-speeds, with a more powerful v8 and a new, more sophisticated all-wheel-drive system called xdrive. There's more standard equipment, including rain-sensing wipers and a power passenger seat in all models, and new options like heated rear seats on the six-cylinder x5. New for 2004 is bmw assist, a telematic system with automatic accident notification and other premium services.    forget rational vs. While the 3. 0i and 4. 4i have added standard equipment and more technology for 2004, their prices reflect an increase of $1,445 and $2,245 respectively compared to 2003, keeping with bmw's trend toward some of the biggest prices increases in the auto industry this year.  the x5 3. 0i is powered by bmw's classic 3. 0-liter inline-6 engine, producing 225 horsepower. Standard equipment includes adjustable power front seats with driver's position memory electronically tagged to the key, remote keyless entry, power windows that can be opened with the key fob, cruise control, cabin-air filtration, a universal garage door transmitter, 17-inch alloy wheels and a tow-hitch receiver. For 2004, the standard manual transmission has been upgraded to a six-speed, while the leatherette (vinyl) upholstery remains.  the x5 4. 4i adds bmw's powerful 4. 4-liter v8 engine, which adds 33 horsepower this year for a total of 315, matched with a new six-speed automatic. The 4. 4i is now almost as powerful as last year's 4. 6is. The 4. 4i also adds dual-zone climate control with rear-seat adjustments, leather upholstery, self-leveling air suspension and 18-inch wheels.  the new x5 4. 8is is an ultra high-performance model that features a 4. 8-liter v8 engine that produces 355-horsepower and 360 pounds-feet of torque, coupled with a six-speed steptronic automatic transmission. It comes with 20-inch w-rated performance tires (275/40 front and 315/35 in the rear). The moonroof, for example, can be ordered separately 1,059), but it's also included in the premium package, which also adds auto-dim mirrors, adjustable rear seat backs, lumbar support, an onboard computer and the bmw assist telematics package to the 4. 4i 2,500), plus leather to the 3. 0i 3,900). The sport package 2,500 for the 3. 0i, $1,600 for 4. 4i) includes a firmer sport suspension, sport steering wheel, 18-inch alloy wheels (for the 3. 0i), sport seats, black chrome exhaust and a titanium colored grilled. The cold weather package 750) includes heated front seats, ski bag and headlight washers. The rear climate package 600 for the 3. 0i, $400 for 4. 4i) brings rear privacy glass, rear side-window blinds and rear climate control adjustment for the 3. 0i. Popular stand alone options include a five-speed automatic transmission 1,275) and the bi-xenon headlamps 800) for the x5 3. 0i, and a premium stereo with 12 speakers, two subwoofers and digital signal processing 1,200). A retractable load floor 380) and satellite navigation 1800) are extra-cost options on all x5 models. Bmw assist 750) provides telematic collision notification, an sos button, roadside assistance, locator and concierge services. An annual subscription 240) must be paid after the first year.  all x5s come with full-time all-wheel drive and dynamic stability control, which includes traction control, electronic brake proportioning, an electronic stability program, and hill descent control.  passive safety was a major development goal for the x5, which can be ordered with no fewer than eight airbags. Each front-seat occupant gets a front airbag, a side thorax airbag and a curtain-style head protection airbag. Bmw's head protection system extends these curtains the full length of the cabin, protecting outside rear passengers as well. Rear-seat side impact airbags are optional 385). Moreover, the x5's unit-body has been design for maximum energy dissipation in heavy impacts. According to bmw, it performed better than any vehicle ever tested by the insurance institute for highway safety (iihs) in its 40-mph offset crash test, which simulates the most. walkaroundthe 2004 bmw x5 feature freshened styling cues, though no one is likely to mistake it for something other than the familiar x5. From the windshield forward, all of the sheet metal is new for 2004. Side by side with a 2003 x5, the changes for 2004 are noticeable.  there's no question who builds this vehicle. The bmw x5 looks like a 5 series wagon on steroids, and is remarkably close to the wagon in overall size. From its kidney-shaped grille to its multi-segmented tail lights, the curvy x5 is all bimmer. The slope of the tailgate matches that on the 5 series wagon. The major difference is that the x5 is 10 inches taller than the 5 series wagon, which creates a key component of its sport-utility character. Large-diameter wheels with low-profile tires enhance its aggressive appearance.  the new bmw x5 4. 8is sports a unique front air dam, body kit, and huge wheels and tires.  truck-based suvs, such as the mercedes-benz m-class, are built with a separate body bolted onto a boxed ladder frame. The x5, however, uses a monocoque body shell like that of a regular sedan. This unit-body construction provides a much stiffer structure, which improves handling, reduces noise and allows better fit and finish, though many consider the design less rugged and durable. The x5 is not the first unit-body suv, and many more have followed. With a few notable exceptions (such as the jeep grand cherokee), unit-body suvs tend to be like the x5, with on-pavement performance taking precedence over off-road ability. interiorthe x5 has a great interior. Typically bmw, it's all business and no nonsense, but it's also very luxurious. The 3. 0i comes standard with leatherette (vinyl) upholstery, but leather is an option. The door handles have a nice brushed-aluminum finish, and the soft plastic surfaces feel more like leather. The switchgear is ergonomically well designed. Available steering wheel controls allow a number of adjustments, including climate, stereo and integrated phone without removing a hand from the wheel.  despite the x5's high seats, many drivers will drop the bottom cushion down, and that can obscure much of the exterior from view, not to mention stuff located a few feet around it. 2008 dodge grand caravan review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Redesigned for 2008, more safety, economy, utility. introductionthe 2008 dodge grand caravan is all new. It's a necessary redesign for dodge, to remain the leader of the minivan pack. It's a couple inches longer and 18 pounds lighter. There's more headroom but it's no taller. Aerodynamics are better and it's quieter inside. The redesigned rear suspension delivers a good ride. Electronic stability control is now standard. Making the time pass quickly. All the sheetmetal is new, as is the front fascia, rear fascia, and taillamps. The grand caravan looks more like a dodge truck, now, in the nose at least. The interior adds overhead storage and pinpoint led lighting.  options for the se include the g package 1750) with cruise control, tinted side glass, rear climate control, and a bigger alternator. The h package 3740 ) includes everything in the g package, plus yes essentials fabric, second-row power windows and third-row power vented windows, 60/40 third-row bench, trip computer, heated mirrors, remote starting and adjustable pedals. There's also a power and remote entry group 1995), including power sliding doors on both sides, power liftgate, eight-way power driver's seat, and driver's lumbar manual support. The m package 3785) includes hands-free phone, rear climate controls, second- and third-row window shades, cabin air filter, automatic headlamps, backup camera, backup beeper, and 17-inch aluminum wheels.  the n package 7290) starts out with the 4. 0-liter single-overhead-cam v6 engine. Most of the rest of it is about deluxe entertainment. Mygig, dvd screens for both the second and third rows, wireless headsets and remote control, sirius radio, and an infinity sound system with nine amplified speakers and subwoofer. The second-row seats swivel to face the third-row 60/40 bench seat, with an easily stowable table between them. Side-impact airbags are not available. A description of the overall shape of the 2008 dodge grand caravan wouldn't sound too much different from a description of the 1982 model. People don't buy minivans so others will look and say, 'that's the new minivan. Some styling!'  so the styling of the redesigned 2008 grand caravan doesn't represent a sea change. But it is clearly different. It looks fresh, as the old styling is ubiquitous. All the sheetmetal is new, as is the front fascia, rear fascia, and taillamps.  it's more aerodynamic, although it seems boxier because of the nose, which now looks more like it's in the dodge family. It's attractive in a suv-ish kind of way. The hood is less sloped than before, and it bears character lines. Sixteen-inch wheels are standard, an increase over the previous 15s. They're boring looking, but the optional five-spoke 17s are better.  the wheelbase of the new grand caravan is 1. 9 inches longer, and the overall length stretched 2. 5 inches, so the overhangs are about the same. The front track has been widened by 2. 5 inches, and the rear by 0. 8 inches, without widening the vehicle at its sides. However the roof has been widened by 6 inches, allowing more overall interior room. Interestingly, the front track is now wider than the rear, a reversal from the previous generation. interiordodge grand caravan leads the minivan field when it comes to interior convenience, capability and versatility. The dvd was a snap to play, unlike, for example, those in some expensive audis. The screen drops down from the ceiling, so the driver loses some visibility in the rearview mirror. Or they flop forward with one lever. For a fairly simple invention, it's a masterpiece. In just a minute or so, and without having to refer to the manual, we dropped the second and third seats flat into the floor. Picked up a long leather couch at the used furniture store. From soccer bus to cargo van, in 60 seconds. We don't need no dodge sprinter van. Well, maybe if we want to load the whole team of 10 kids. Other information includes distance to empty (about 400 miles on a tank of gas), compass, outside temp. 2009 chrysler sebring review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The midsize, front-wheel-drive chrysler sebring competes with the honda accord, toyota camry, and saturn aura, among others. The availability of a retractable hardtop convertible distinguishes the sebring lineup from its popular competitors. The sedan seats five. More than half of the available space in the convertible's trunk is taken up by the top mechanism when the top is down.  the sebring cabin is pleasant. The look is sleek, and it is all nicely integrated and finished. Some of the interior surfaces are cold and hard to the touch, however. With an available dvd rear-seat entertainment system, navigation and uconnect, the sebring's available technology is as good as or better than anything in the class.  dynamically, the sebring fits middle of the pack in the midsize class. Ride quality is generally pleasant, soaking up most bumps well. Handling is competent in the sedan. Limited sedan models come with leather trim, air conditioning, steering-wheel mounted audio controls, theft alarm, an eight-way power driver's seat, am/fm/mp3 with six-disc cd changer, and a trip computer. Some options are grouped into packages, including an electronic convenience group, which includes automatic air conditioning, fog lamps, a heated and cooled front console and cupholder, temperature gauge and compass, map lights, auto-dimming rear-view mirror, remote start, garage-door opener, and tire pressure monitor 1,230). There is also an electronic stability program 425), sunroof 775), uconnect phone 360), uconnect gps 1,285), and a navigation and sound package that includes the uconnect phone and navigation 1,695). With the v6 engine, 18-inch wheels and tires are standard.  the lx convertible 28,130) features a power vinyl soft top, six-way power front seats, power mirrors, air conditioning, rear defroster, a six-speaker sound system and 16-inch wheels and tires. Limited convertible options include the electronic stability program 425), uconnect 275), and uconnect gps, which includes an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and navigation 1,200).  safety features on all models include multi-stage front airbags, torso-protecting front side airbags, seatbelt pretensioners and constant-force retractors, rear-seat child safety seat anchors and tethers (latch), and antilock brakes. Sedans have head-protecting side curtain airbags for both seating rows. Electronic stability program plus traction control and brake assist, which enhances emergency braking, are optional, and we recommend it. It also has a shortened coupe-like greenhouse, and is 3. 2 inches longer overall. Both ride on the same 108. 9-inch wheelbase and share the same 61. 8-inch front and rear track. Tires and wheels are interchangeable.  viewed head on, both body styles feature the current rendition of the idiomatic chrysler grille: egg-crate with bright horizontal strips and topped by the brand's winged crest. A substantial, but otherwise unremarkable bumper tops a slim lower air intake bracketed by two, smaller, grille-like openings at the outer ends of which pods provide housings for fog lamps. Molded-in strakes dress up the hood.  there are also differences in balance and proportion between the sedan and convertible. Were the convertible designed as a traditional soft top, we daresay it'd look better. But the retractable hardtop required added length that unsettles the design.  the sedan is decorated with creased character lines on its sides. Flowing rearward from the front quarter panels, these creases spread, expanding the distance between them and emphasizing the car's sharply outlined wedge shape. Mild fender blisters circle the wheel openings. Body-color, anti-ding door moldings are optional on all trim levels. Side windows are framed in flat black.  the convertible uses the same basic design as the sedan, but the wheelbase looks too long and there's too much of the hindquarters for a two-door. If the expanse of metal between the trailing edge of the door and the rear wheelwell were halved, then it'd fit. But there has to be some place to store large segments of an articulated, metal roof, along with the motors, pumps, and other hardware necessary to lower and raise it. On the sebring convertible, this results in a bulbous back end, with a top surface area nearly the equal to that of the hood. Also, to allow the retracted roof to fit inside the rear quarters, the rearmost edges of the rear pillars must be drawn inward. This awkwardly positions the retractable hardtop roof more on top of the rear fenders than allowing it to smoothly flow down into the side of the car. The look is better on soft top convertibles because the top looks more like a separate piece than an integrated whole.  at the rear of both body styles, large, multi-element taillights wrap around the rear fenders, crossing over into the trunk lid, which has a modest, molded-in lip at its trailing edge. The sedan's trunk lid is shorter than the convertible's trunk lid. The sedan also has a visually jarring inset rear window, which seems to be an effort, however futile, to enlarge the trunk opening while maintaining the desired top-to-bottom proportions.  the sedan's trunk has 13. 6 cubic feet of cargo room, but the opening is quite small, so it won't accept larger boxes. The convertible's trunk opens like a normal trunk with any of the tops up or down and has 13. 1 cubic feet of cargo room. Chrysler says the trunk can hold two full-size golf bags with the top down. That's true, but access with the top retracted is very restricted. interiorinside, the sedan and convertible are virtually identical. However, the convertible has a narrower rear seat that allows for seating of just two passengers in back, while the sedan can take three.  the dashboard styling carries the motif of the chrysler winged crest, or at least that's what the designers say. Picture the winged crest from the grille magnified, say, 100 times, then with the wings severely cropped. 2006 mercedes-benz c-class review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New engines improve the lineup. introductionthe 2006 mercedes-benz c-class lineup has been revised and streamlined, but the c-class remains the most accessible of all mercedes cars sold in the united states.  the c-class hatchback coupes and wagons have been eliminated, and only the sedans remain. Moreover, the 2006 c-class is powered by an all-new line of v6 engines, with more horsepower and more advanced technology than before. The luxury models feature a high-tech seven-speed automatic transmission, and the c350 luxury sedan has the classic mercedes balance of ride quality and handling. The line also includes sport models for those who want a sportier driving experience, and that's what mercedes has been emphasizing in its advertising.  inside, the c-class cars look and feel like a mercedes-benz, with firm, supportive seats and mostly high-quality materials. The c-class delivers mercedes engineering and safety technology, with optional all-wheel-drive that will improve traction in wet or wintry conditions.  in short, the c-class brings the three-pointed mercedes star to the rest of us, with sedans starting below $30,000, or about the same price as a loaded honda accord or toyota camry.  new engines for 2006 complement the substantial c-class updates made just a year ago. Mercedes redesigned the c-class interior for 2005, freshened the exterior styling and further distinguished the sport models from the standard luxury sedans. A new six-speed manual transmission greatly improved shift action. For those seeking mercedes-benz engineering, design strengths and mystique in a mainstream sedan, it doesn't get any easier than the c-class. lineupthe mercedes-benz c-class lineup has been simplified for 2006, thanks to the elimination of several models. The station wagons and three-door coupes are history. This engine is mercedes' first dual overhead cam v6, with the latest control technology and fully variable valve timing.  most of the c-class is divided into sport and luxury models. The sport models have firmer suspensions, lower ride height and more powerful brakes than the luxury models. The sport sedans also have a thick, three-spoke steering wheel, more thickly bolstered front seats and aluminum trim, and are trimmed with aggressive lower body cladding previously reserved for expensive amg models.    the least-expensive c-class car is the c230 sport sedan 29,200). The c230 is powered by a 2. 5-liter version of the new v6, generating 201 horsepower (considerably more than the least powerful c-class in 2005). It comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission and 17-inch wheels with high-performance tires.  standard equipment on the c230 sport sedan includes dual-zone automatic climate control with interior air filtration, leather-faced seats with 10-way power adjustment for driver and front passenger, cruise control, tilt and telescopic steering wheel with redundant audio controls, one-touch power windows and automatic headlamps.  the c280 luxury sedan 32,950) comes with the same comfort and convenience items included in the c230. The primary difference is the c280's engine: a 3. 0-liter version of the new v6 rated at 228 horsepower. The c280 also comes standard with the industry's first seven-speed automatic transmission, 16-inch wheels and all-season tires, and wood interior trim rather than aluminum.  the c350 sport sedan 37,550) and c350 luxury sedan 38,150) are both powered by a 3. 5-liter v6 generating 268 horsepower. The sport gets the six-speed manual and larger performance tires; the luxury version gets the seven-speed automatic and all-season tires. Both add position memory for the seats and mirrors.  sport models can be equipped with the seven-speed automatic transmission as an option 1,410). All-wheel drive, which mercedes calls 4matic 1,800), is available on the c280 and c350 luxury sedans; 4matic comes packaged with heated front seats.  options for c-class models include the sunroof package 1,790), which includes a power sunroof, auto-dimming mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, and a universal garage-door. The dvd navigation system 2,200) includes a stereo upgrade. Individually priced options include a cd changer 420), heated front seats 680), and tele aid emergency communications hardware 820).  the limited-production c55 amg sedan 54,450) tops the c-class line. Powered by a hand-built 5. 5-liter v8 rated at 362 horsepower. The c55's speed shift five-speed automatic, brakes and suspension are improved to match its prodigious horsepower.  safety technology is a key component of the mercedes brand, and every c-class is equipped with world-class safety features. Among them: active front head restraints. In the event of a rear collision exceeding the system's deployment threshold, the front head restraints move forward nearly two inches and upward by more than an inch, helping to support the head and reduce whiplash injuries. The c-class has side-impact airbags for front passengers as well as curtain-style head-protection airbags for front and rear passengers. Rear passenger side-impact airbags 385) are optional. walkaroundthe c-class cars look like a mercedes-benz should and just about everyone will quickly identify them as such. All c-class cars sport the traditional mercedes three-pointed star as a standup hood ornament, but even without that they'd be immediately identifiable. The c-class shares styling themes with the larger e-class and s-class cars, but retains a tight look all its own. Aerodynamically, the c-class cars are among the most efficient in the mercedes-benz family. The c-class boasts a drag coefficient of 0. 27, which helps minimize wind noise and improves fuel efficiency.  distinguishing between sport and luxury versions of the 2006 c-class is easy. The sport sedans have a more aggressive looking front air dam and sculpted lower cladding previously used only on mercedes' exotic amg models. The sport sedans are further distinguished by a unique grille with three horizontal bars, darker, blue-tinted glass and larger 17-inch wheels.  the styling for all c-class models was freshened for 2005. The changes were subtle and we're not sure how many people actually noticed. Revised styling cues included wider set quad-ovoid headlights, more pronounced fender flares and revised taillights.  the c-class sedans are the same length as the bmw 3 series cars, but several inches narrower, making it easier to fit them into tight garage spaces.  the c55 amg is another beast altogether. Its body work from the windshield pillars forward was borrowed from mercedes' larger clk coupe in order to widen the front track and make room for a big v8 engine. From the rear, the c55 is dominated by a two pairs of chromed, oversize exhaust tips. Also noticeable from the rear is its extra-wide 18-inch alloy wheels and tires. interiorthe c-class interior looks like the inside of a mercedes-benz should, and for the most part it feels that way, too. A model re-alignment for 2006 has increased the level of luxury in the least expensive models. Fabric upholstery and manually operated seats can no longer be found in the c-class line.  any of the seats are very good: neither so hard that they numb the backside nor so soft that they leave occupants tired or aching. The seats in the standard luxury models are more traditional, perhaps richer in appearance, than those in the sport models. By comparison, the seats in the sport models look stark, but provide significantly more side bolstering for spirited driving. Adjustable lumbar support is now standard, meaning more comfort for the lower back. The c55 amg has its own special sport seats and premium leather upholstery.  the c-class got a thorough interior re-do for the 2005 model year so the 2006 models benefit from that. The dashboard, instruments and seats were redesigned, and materials were revised throughout. To the left and right of these are smaller fuel and temperature gauges. In the middle sits an lcd display with various system and trip functions. Fashioned in the mold of the larger mercedes e-class, the instrument cluster is deeply hooded and virtually eliminates glare on the dials. The backlit script is clear and easy to read.  we like the center stack, which looks more modern than before. Audio controls are now located in what we consider the optimal spot: above the climate control switches, which sit at the bottom of the stack. Both audio and climate knobs are large and easy to locate. The lack of some of the complicated systems found on more expensive mercedes models is, frankly, a welcome relief.  the switchgear is, for the most part, easy to use and understand. The stalk controls have a beefy feel with positive detents. Redundant buttons on the steering wheel let the driver operate the audio and telephone functions without removing a hand from the wheel. The stalk-mounted cruise control continues to be an annoyance, however. It's also easy to engage the cruise control by mistake when trying to use the turn signals, a complaint. 2008 chrysler pacifica review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Roomy and versatile. introductionthe chrysler pacifica helped launch a trend known in the industry as crossover vehicles. Crossovers are designed to combine the best attributes of sport-utility vehicles, sedans, and minivans. Inside it's roomy and comfortable, whether upholstered in fabric or leather. Getting in and out is easy. It rides like a sedan and handles well for a vehicle of its heft, and it's more enjoyable to drive through suburbia than just about any truck-based suv. The five-passenger base model has two bucket seats in front with a split folding bench in the second row that seats up to three. Six-passenger models swap the middle-row bench for two folding bucket seats, and add a 50/50 split bench in the rear. Either changes from people mover to cargo hauler in a matter of seconds, and in both cases maximum cargo capacity exceeds that of the typical mid-size suv.  the pacifica earned outstanding scores in government crash tests. All-wheel drive is available, making it a good choice for snow country. Towing capacity is 2600 pounds, which is enough for personal watercraft, dirt bikes or camping trailers. It's stylish and handsome, and it doesn't fit easily in any particular mold.  after changes aimed at power and refinement for 2007, 2008 models are little changed. Base models are now called lx, and content is slightly altered model by model. lineupthe 2008 chrysler pacifica is available in three trim levels, all of which offer front-wheel drive or full-time all-wheel drive. All lx models seat five, with a three-place, folding second-row bench seat, and come with 17-inch steel wheels and hubcaps. Its 4. 0-liter overhead-cam v6 delivers 253 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque, with a six-speed automatic. Chrysler's all-wheel drive system varies power delivery front to rear to maximize traction. An entertainment group 860) adds rear dvd entertainment. A comfort /convenience group 555) has power adjustable pedals, auto-dimming driver’s side mirror, and memory for the driver seat, mirrors, pedals, and audio. Other options include leather upholstery 1,400), parkview rear camera with parksense 595); p235/55r19 all-season tires on chromed alloy wheels 1,150), sunroof 895), 385-watt infinity intermezzo surround sound 700) with eight infinity speakers and subwoofer, power liftgate 400), heated first- and second-row seats 550), and uconnect hands-free cell phone link 275).  the pacifica limited fwd 34,150) and limited awd 36,195) are the luxury models. They feature the 2/2/2 seating and nearly all the amenities, including leather seats with position memory for the driver, heated front and second-row seats, 6cd changer, auto-dimming driver’s side mirror, sunroof, wood and leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, power ad. walkaroundthe chrysler pacifica was one of the first of the so-called crossover vehicles, and we consider it both well conceived and well executed. Yet it has a more rugged, appealing (and less socially branding) appearance than most minivans. In overall styling, it lines up more on the sport-utility vehicle side.  pacifica is loaded with parts and technologies from mercedes-benz, including a complete rear suspension system borrowed from the mercedes e-class sedan. It's a well-engineered vehicle.  the pacifica doesn't look like anything else on the road. Its design is less radical than crossovers such as the nissan murano or mazda cx-9, and its glass-to-steel proportions are unique. Though revised for 2007, the styling has been with us for a few years and it doesn't look as fresh when compared with the latest vehicles, such as the new gmc acadia.  the pacifica looks distinctive, however, and unmistakably like a chrysler, with a grille and other design cues unique to the brand. In front, it sports a prominent three-bar grille, flanked by wing-like, twin-beam headlights in the theme of the chrysler 300 sedan. The pacifica also features hood strakes introduced on the chrysler crossfire sports car. These creases are evenly spaced across the hood, running rearward from the grille toward the base of the windshield; some of us like the strakes on the pacifica, some of us are still deciding.  while pacifica doesn't look so big from the outside, it's as much as 18 inches longer and six inches wider than some of its crossover competitors. At the same time, the pacifica is almost three inches lower to the ground than a typical minivan. It's more like a sedan in this regard, and easier to climb in and out of. That should also make it a good dog car.  in side view, the pacifica is marked by a distinctive character line that begins at the front wheel and ramps upward as it moves toward the rear. The line helps create something of a wedge look, even in a vehicle so large. The expanse of sheet metal aft of the rear side doors and a big, broad rear gate add visual mass that looks a bit ungainly from some angles, but this isn't reflected in pacifica's handling or driving characteristics.  the pacifica limited model is the best looking model, thanks to its prominent fog lights, monochromatic paint scheme and big 19-inch chrome wheels. interioranyone considering the chrysler pacifica will have to choose between a 2/3, five-seat interior package or a 2/2/2 six-seat configuration. It's not as simple as adding an extra seat, however, because the six-seat package drops maximum cargo capacity nearly 14 cubic feet, which roughly equals the amount of space in the trunk of a good-sized sedan. And while the five-seat arrangement is available only on the base model, option choices allow the base pacifica to be equipped with nearly all the goodies offered on the higher-trim models.  the seat positioning is one of pacifica's most appealing assets. Climbing in and out is easy because pacifica sits relatively low to the ground, more like a sedan, and its door sills are low. Yet the seats are positioned high, seemingly at conventional table-chair height, so the driver sits much higher than he or she would in the typical sedan. It certainly improves forward visibility, in that fewer vehicles on the road ahead will obscure the pacifica driver's view.  from the driver's seat, the first impression is one of spaciousness. There's plenty of headroom, despite the high seat bottoms, and the window sills rise almost to shoulder height. The high-waist design means the sills are too high for comfortable arm resting, but it will likely enhance the secure feeling for many.  the cloth upholstery in the five-passenger base model looks more expensive than we expected. The yes essentials fabric is stain and odor resistant, and treated to control static. Appointments become more luxurious with.

2002 chevrolet avalanche review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Chevrolet has figured out a way to stuff an eight-foot pickup bed and seating for five people into one truck. It combines the comfort of a five-passenger suburban with the hauling capability of a chevy silverado long-bed pickup.  it does this with an ingenious device called a midgate that allows the owner to convert the truck from a cargo hauler to a people hauler within a couple of minutes. With the midgate secured, the avalanche can carry five people in comfort along with a load of cargo in its 5-foot 3-inch bed. Grab a load of dirt or gravel without any worries of messing up either the luxurious interior or the bullet-proof bed. Lower the midgate and carry a stack of 4x8-foot sheets of plywood; and that's with the tailgate up. It solves an age-old practical problem. Easily overlooked, however, is the attention to detail seen everywhere: flush-mounted cargo lights that illuminate the bed, foldaway tie-down hooks, footholds and handholds for climbing up onto the cargo cover. The list goes on and on. The avalanche is big, slightly longer than a suburban, yet it feels tight and surprisingly nimble on the road. lineupchevrolet avalanche comes in two weight ranges: 1500 and 2500. 2wd and 4wd models are available. There's only one trim level available for 2002.  retail prices: 1500 2wd 30,465); 1500 4wd 33,465); 2500 2wd 32,365); 2500 4wd 35,365).  avalanche 1500 models are powered by a 5. 3-liter vortec v8 rated at 285 horsepower and 325 pounds-feet of torque. It comes mated with a 4l85 heavy-duty automatic transmission with overdrive and tow haul mode. 2500 series models ride on rear leaf springs in place of the 1500's five-link coil springs with automatic load leveling. 2500s are rated to tow up to 12,000 pounds.  a special north face edition is available as a 4wd 1500 model that features chevy's z71 suspension, green and black seats, special door trim, floor mats with north face logos, a white instrument cluster, badges on the c-pillars. Sage green, an exterior color, will be unique to the north face edition, with sunset orange, onyx, black, pewter and summit white available as well. Also included are two summit pod backpacks, as well as water duffalo storage bags, which will initially be exclusive to avalanche. walkaroundthe avalanche is essentially a modified chevy suburban. Fully 85 percent of its parts are the same. Gm's engineers created the avalanche by lopping off the rear roof structure and quarter windows of a suburban, and redesigning the back end. When the rear seats are in place, there's a 5-foot 3-inch bed - long enough for most tasks. It's built on the same superb platform as the chevy silverado.  the avalanche comes standard with a lockable hard bed cover rated to support 250 pounds. Pro-tec composite material is used for midgate, tailgate and portions of cargo box. The composite material is exceptionally durable, and resists dings, scratches and dents. Two top-box storage compartments on either side of the cargo box provide a combined 3. 5 cubic feet of lockable storage space; the compartments have drains, so they can be filled with ice and used as coolers.  the avalanche is the first to feature chevrolet's edgy styling for upcoming full-size pickups and suvs, starting with the 2003 silverado. Another styling element that distinguishes the 2002 avalanche is its extensive use of body cladding. The cladding does serve a purpose: it is a composite material that's tough as iron and is impervious to flying gravel.  standard wheels are 16-inch cast aluminum; 17-inch wheels are optional. That means a comfortable cabin for passengers and good ergonomic design for the driver. Interior lighting is implemented throughout the cabin with flush-mounted cargo lights in the bed. It allows the avalanche to switch from a suburban-like vehicle with comfortable seating for up to six people with a 5-foot, 3-inch cargo box to a three-passenger pickup truck with an 8-foot, 1-inch box. The midgate works just like a folding rear seat in a sedan or suv: folding it up reveals a nice, comfortable bench seat. Folding it down provides flat cargo space and access to the back. Remove the bed cover, which is divided into three pieces, slide it into a nice fabric bag that's provided and store it along the bed; it attaches to the side to minimize the space it takes up. But wind noise is minimal, with no buffeting. Gm engineers achieved this through extensive tuning in the wind tunnel and a pair of flying buttresses that add structural rigidity to the truck and can be used as tie-downs.  seats in the avalanche are identical to the first two rows in the suburban. Avalanche comes with a coffee warmer, available map lights, and the ultimate in sun visors. The rear seats can also be folded down for cargo space inside the cab; there's nearly 54 cubic feet of interior cargo volume with the midgate up and rear seat folded. driving impressionthe avalanche 1500 models ride as smoothly as a fully loaded suburban, maybe even better. The avalanche feels smooth and quiet. It feels tight with no squeaks or rattles. It seems to handle a little better than a suburban. 4wd and 2wd versions of the avalanche use the same suspension and same ride height, with torsion bars in front and a five-link coil-spring suspension with a solid axle in the rear.  the brakes are excellent. Gm has come a long way with brakes in the past few years.  the 5. 3-liter v8 delivers plenty of punch. It's a responsive engine, rated at 285 horsepower and, more important, 325 pounds-feet of torque, which launches it quickly off the line. The broad, flat torque curve, with 90 percent of peak torque available from 1600 to 5000 rpm, is designed to provide outstanding trailer- and load-hauling capability. It's rated to tow up to 12,000 pounds in either 2wd or 4wd versions. Its cargo bed is indestructible and can take a load of gravel. The interior is as luxurious as a suburban.  there's plenty of power from the 1500 model's v8 engines and the handling and ride quality strike a good balance. The 2500 models offer big towing capability. Attention to detail from the standpoints of design and engineering and customer comfort and convenience is impressive. Bucket Seats✔ Climate Control

2006 honda civic review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new lineup sets new standards for compacts. introductionit's hard to find a more competitive new car market than the compact class. And it's more than just price, as the number of entries has skyrocketed in recent years.  honda once led the class, in every measure that mattered, from performance to price to quality to pizzazz. And just as important image-wise, honda led the hot, sport compact niche. With the redesigned, restyled, rejuvenated 2006 honda civic models, the company has returned to the fray with renewed energy.  across the line, there's more power, improved ride and handling, and better people packaging. There are more choices as well: a sporty new civic si coupe, a fully populated tier of coupes and sedans with new engines and transmissions, and a more efficient and effective hybrid sedan. In between there's a sedan listing at $15,560 with the new five-speed automatic. The si starts at $20,290. There are other cars in the class that undercut these figures, but the civic includes important safety features, including antilock brakes and side-impact airbags as standard equipment, that many others leave on the option list. lineuphonda doesn't hold back when it comes to fleshing out a model line. A performance-oriented coupe, the si, comes with a 197-horsepower, 2. 0-liter inline-4 fitted with a six-speed manual. Standard equipment is confined to power windows, tilt-and-telescope steering wheel and height-adjustable driver's seat. Added to the no-extra-charge features on the lx are power moonroof; variable windshield wipers; a second 12-volt power outlet; a 60/40 split folding rear seatback; a seven-speaker, 350-watt, xm-ready, premium stereo with auxiliary input jack and steering wheel-mounted controls; and outside temperature indicator. There are few options available and honda positions its options packages and automatic transmissions as separate models, so for example, there is the civic coupe ex with navigation and automatic transmission 21,010) and the similarly equipped sedan version 20,760).  the si coupe 20,290) comes with all the gear found on the lx coupe plus leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, amber-tinted headlight trim rings and a body-colored rear wing spoiler. The si coupe is available with high-performance summer tires and the navigation system with xm satellite radio 22,240).  the hybrid sedan 22,150) adds to the lx's features automatic climate control, a roof-mounted radio antenna, a rear decklid spoiler, and hybrid-pertinent digital data displays. The hybrid is available with the navigation system 23,650).  dealer accessories include 16-inch alloy wheels 876), chrome exhaust tips 119), and aero-style, exterior body add-ons for the sedan. Honda factory performance packages are available for the si, one for the lx and ex coupes and sedans. The si hfp package includes lowered springs, more tautly tuned shocks, a sports muffler, 18-inch alloy wheels, a full lower-body aero kit and the hfp emblem 3880). The lx and ex hfp package for the coupe 3183) and sedan 3680) substitutes 17-inch alloy wheels, drops the muffler and adds a rear spoiler. Installation costs extra and is set by dealers. walkaroundhonda re-did everything for 2006. Not only are powertrains updated and upgraded, and a new platform developed, but the sheetmetal is new. Not a single body panel is carried over from 2005.  the sedans and coupes don't share any body panels. And trim elements and markings distinguish each iteration.  the platform underneath is new for 2006, seriously strengthened in rigidity, stiffness and crash absorption capacities, with minor adjustments to accommodate the varying dimensions of the coupe and sedan body styles. As part of its campaign to revitalize the civic's appeal to the sport compact market, honda has incorporated reinforced mounting points and gussets to allow suspension and certain other modifications without diminishing body integrity.  from the front, styling differences are subtle, but marked. A polished, horizontal bar dominates the sedan grille. Slender headlamp assemblies angle upwards as they curve around the fenders. A single, broad air intake fills the lower portion of the fascia.  the coupe grille appears more open, with the honda logo suspended on a matte-black framework. An understated badge tucked away in the far right reaches of the grille identifies the sporty si version. The coupe headlights are more sharply outlined. The lower air intake opens between two, geometric recesses that feed cooling air to the front disc brakes and house the optional fog lamps.  the front ends, but especially the coupes', push the leading corners down and outward, emphasizing the 2006's wider track (the distance side to side between the tires), which grows by more than an inch in front and by more than two inches in back over the 2005's.  save for a lower body character line, drawn slightly higher on the coupe than on the sedan, the sides of the new civic are more slab than sensuous. Understated fender blisters, more pronounced on the coupe, break up the otherwise featureless expanse. What excitement there is in the side view is in the sleekness of what honda calls a monoform design. A central expression of this is the windshield, the leading edge of which reaches into the hood all the way to the middle of the front wheel wells, pushing the design concept of 'cab forward' to a new extreme. On the coupe, the windshield is raked at a radical 21. 9 degrees, markedly steeper than the '05's 26. 7 degrees, even exceeding the acura nsx's 23. 9 degrees. And the sedan's matches the nsx's, dropping from the '05's 29. 1 degrees. The sail (the body panel aft of the rear side window) is unique to each model as well. The coupe's forms an acute angle emphasizing the two-door body style, while the sedan's curves down over the rear door's trailing edge, pulling the eye through the higher roofline. The coupe's be-spoilered, rounded rear profile suggests swiftness. The sedan's somewhat abbreviated trunk lid and chopped off tail end adds perceived mass to the tightly proportioned, smallish sedan.  likewise, the rear view of each body style differs markedly. The coupe's sloping trunk lid settles into a deep cut in the rear bumper, with the license plate sheltered in an equally deep recess. The sedan's trunk lid drops in an almost vertical, unrelieved sheer from a relatively high crest across the top, all very bmw-like in presence. interiorif the 2006 civic's exterior is new, the '06's interior borders on shocking. First impression of the instrument arrangement is of a video game. Controls are for the most part where they should be, but not necessarily as they should be. There's little symmetry in organization or shape of features and interfaces. It's not an unpleasant look, but one that requires some acclimation. Ironically, perhaps, the interiors are indistinguishable across the full line, with only minor differences necessitated by the different powertrains.  splayed across the top of the seemingly unending dash in front of the driver is a hooded opening with a digital speedometer between lcd coolant temperature and fuel level gauges. Down below, in the more common place for the instrument panel, in the half circle formed by the top half of the steering wheel, that is, there's a large, round, analog tachometer. To each side of this lower ip are large, irregular vent registers. Centered in the dash above the climate control panel is either an lcd window combining the navigation display and audio settings and, in the hybrid, a selection of graphic depictions of the hybrid system's functions and status or a stereo control head with the pertinent accoutrements. To the right of this squished pod-like arrangement, the dash curves away from the front seat passenger and houses two, more horizontally oriented vent registers, again neither of which matches the other. A wide, but not especially deep glove box rests below a cabin-wide, clam shell-like notch dividing the upper and lower halves of the dash.  there is no center stack to speak of tying together the dash and the drive tunnel.

2008 mazda mazda3 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Sporty with worldly charm. introductionthe mazda3 is a true world car. It's space-efficient and exciting to drive like a european car. It's practical and economical like a japanese car. And like an american car, it's available with a surprising list of comfort and luxury features.  the mazda 3, or mazda3, was developed on three continents, by various international subsidiaries of the ford motor company, which owns 33. 4 percent of mazda motor corporation. Volvo developed the mazda3's body. Ford itself contributed the suspension design and sophisticated electronics. This is a premium automobile, exciting to drive, styled adventurously, and fully equipped with luxury features. There's nothing austere, basic or cheap about it. The seats are supportive and comfortable, good for long drives.  sedan and hatchback versions look quite different. The five-door hatchback is like the high-fashion station wagons from european manufacturers, offering the practicality of the five-door configuration with an emphasis on a premium driving experience. The mazda3 is a good choice for drivers who have friends or lots of stuff: the sedan and hatchback excel at back-seat roominess when compared with the honda civic and other competition, and the hatchback excels at cargo space.  there's a high-performance version called mazdaspeed3, motivated by 263 turbocharged horsepower.  launched as a 2004 model, the mazda3 was extensively updated and upgraded for 2007, with a revised appearance inside and out. Reinforcements to the body shell improved overall chassis rigidity. Suspension damping was re-tuned to quicken steering response and reduce understeer. Anti-lock brakes with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist were made standard for all s-models and optional for the i-model. Traction control and stability control became available. And an auxiliary audio input with 12-volt power outlet made the mazda3 ipod-friendly. All-season 195/65hr15 tires mount on steel wheels. The 3s sport hatchback 17,925) is similarly equipped, but rolls on 205/50vr17 tires on 17-inch alloy rims. A long list of extras, including the cd changer 500) and sirius radio 430), can also be installed as dealer accessories.  the mazdaspeed3 sport hatchback 22,430) comes with a 263-hp turbocharged 2. 3-liter inline-4, six-speed manual transmission, limited-slip differential, sport seats, aluminum pedals, unique red-and-black cloth interior trim, and 215/45yr18 tires. The only significant factory option is the navigation/sirius package 1950), although again, dealer-installed accessories are available.  safety features that come on all mazda3 models include front airbags, an energy-absorbing brake pedal, and a tire-pressure monitor. Anti-lock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist are standard on 3s, as are side airbags and head-protection curtain airbags. All of these features are offered as a package 395) on 3i models with air conditioning. The designers worked hard to give this car the kind of character that will set it apart from other compact cars, and the result is a surprisingly bold look. The whole front fascia is unique, and the rear taillights and chrome exhaust tips set it apart as well. Big 18-inch cast-aluminum wheels clearly identify this as a high-performance car. interiorwhen it comes to compact cars, the game is all about space efficiency. The mazda and the honda are close in front-seat room, with mazda providing a bit less leg room but a bit more width. In the rear seat, however, the mazda is significantly larger, most notably in leg room and shoulder room. The back of the rear seat doesn't quite fold flat, but it's close. Thanks to this design, the mazda3 five-door will accommodate 43. 8 cubic feet of cargo behind the front seats when the second seat is folded down.  the mazda3 seats themselves are supportive without being confining, and the use of high-quality foam in the bolsters makes them very comfortable during long drives. Every version of the mazda3 except for the entry-level sedan features a height adjuster for the driver's seat, and this works with the standard tilt/telescoping steering wheel to enable a wide range of drivers to get a good fit with the controls. For 3s, a brushed aluminum surface lends some drama to the dashboard, as do red-orange electro-luminescent numerals with blue-tinted dials. Mazda 3i sedans feature wood trim for the dash and white-faced instruments.  the mazda3 affords plenty of practical storage space, notably a cavernous glovebox. Two cupholders are integrated into the center console, while a small but deep box separates the seats. The navigation system's controls are located in the center console, however, and they're small and fussy enough (especially the joystick control) to be a chore to operate. But the mazda3 is one of the very few cars in this price class to offer a navigation system.  the mazdaspeed3's interior has the same overall look as its siblings, but red.

2002 chevrolet silverado 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Car-like drivability with traditional truck styling. introductionthe chevrolet silverado is the second-best-selling pickup in america, but that still adds up to a lot of trucks. This truck is every bit as technically advanced, every bit as car-like and user-friendly as its aero-look competitors. It rides, handles, and stops as well as, maybe better than, the best of them. Silverado prices still start about $700 below ford's f-150. Three trim levels are available: base, ls, and lt. The so-called half-ton range includes both the 1500 series, with actual payloads ranging from 1593 to 2334 pounds (depending on bed, cab, and drive configuration), and the heavier-duty 2500 series with payloads in the 2600-3200-pound range.  silverado 1500 models are available with a 4. 3-liter v6, 4. 8-liter v8, or 5. 3-liter v8. The 1500 hd crew cab and 2500 are powered exclusively by a 6. 0-liter v8.  (three-quarter-ton silverados are badged 2500hd and 3500, and offer payloads up to 6089 pounds. Look for those in a separate nctd. Com review.). walkaroundsilverado's frame is the stiffest and lightest truck frame general motors has ever built. The front frame rails are hydroformed, a process that uses high-pressure hydraulics to shape large and complex components that used to be fabricated from smaller stampings. Tubular crossmembers and roll-formed mid-rails increase rigidity even more. This stiff structure enhances handling and ride quality immensely, while improving crashworthiness.  the front suspension comprises aluminum upper and lower control arms, with coil springs on two-wheel-drive 1500s. These feature a delayed-upshift mode for towing. They are excellent transmissions. interiorlike its exterior design, silverado's interior reflects traditional chevrolet thinking. The doors and door openings are the largest in the industry, and the cab is the roomiest.  the instrument package looks like a cross between a corvette's and a traditional pickup's. All use pleasant, highly legible white-on-black graphics.  the sound-system control panel is located above the climate controls. There are three 12-volt outlets at the bottom center of the dashboard for radar detectors, cellular telephones, laptop computers, and other accessories.  an lt extended cab we drove awhile back came with six-way power front bucket seats with seat heaters and memory. Air conditioning outlets and a set of drop-down cup holders are built in for rear-seat passengers. A compass is incorporated into the lt's overhead console, along with three storage areas for sunglasses, garage door opener, and small items. When cargo capacity is more important than hauling passengers, the entire rear seat assembly can be removed with a wrench and lifted out through the door.  a more recent drive in a 1500 hd crew cab revealed a really comfortable truck. The back seats are roomy and comfortable, very similar to those in an uplevel suburban. The seats were trimmed in handsome leather and they could be flipped down to provide a big, secure cargo area. This is a great truck for someone who wants a roomy rear seat with interior cargo space and big trailer-towing capability.  about the only thing we don't like about the silverado interior is the design of the interior door handles, which swivel through an up-and-in arc, and felt loose whenever we used them. The system calls for assistance automatically if the truck's airbags have deployed. driving impressionsilverado lt drives like a luxury car and is supremely smooth and quiet. That smooth, quiet, unified feel is largely due to the stiff frame, which isolates the running gear for reduced noise and vibration. A cast magnesium beam behind the instrument panel and a lateral steel beam between the magnesium beam and the right side of the dash further reinforce the stiff body. Squeaks and rattles simply don't happen. This is one strong truck, and its chassis rigidity allows the suspension to soak up and manage bumps and ruts and tar strips so well that its overall ride behavior is near the luxury class. A long, 143-inch wheelbase improves the ride further and enhances high-speed stability.  the 1500hd crew cab model does not ride quite as smoothly. Even the rack-and-pinion system has a fairly wide dead spot in the center when cruising, which chevrolet says is designed to minimize steering corrections on the highway. That's enough grunt to smoke the rear tires at will. We recommend the 5. 3 over the smaller 4. 8. The big 6. 0-liter v8 that comes on the 1500hd delivers a ton of torque for pulling big, heavy trailers.  braking hasn't been a traditional strong point for u. S.-built pickups, but here again the silverado breaks from tradition. Braking force begins only an inch into the pedal travel. A new feature called dynamic rear proportioning improves stability under heavy braking, whether the truck is loaded or empty. Anyone used to the brakes in the previous-generation chevy pickups and full-size suvs should be very pleased with the brake-pedal response and stopping performance. summarychevrolet silverado is overall the best among full-size pickups. Chevy's full-size silverado pickups are among the smoothest, quietest, most civilized, best equipped, and most enjoyable trucks we've driven. model lineup1500 2wd: short box regular cab 17,518); short box extended cab 22,537); ls short box extended cab 24,484); lt long box extended cab 29,658);r1500 4wd: ls short box regular cab 23,724); lt long box extended cab 32,778);2500 2wd: ls long box regular cab 24,314);r2500 4wd: lt short box extended cab 34,123). assembled inpontiac, michigan; fort wayne, indiana; oshawa, ontario, canada. model testedlt short box extended cab 29,358). 2007 jeep compass review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new crossover with big-suv virtues. introductionthe 2007 jeep compass is all new, a term usually meaning that a vehicle has been completely redesigned. But in the case of the compass, it's a completely new vehicle: first generation.  one way to measure the value of the compass might be to compare it to the trusty jeep cherokee that was enormously popular for 18 years and finally ended its run in 2001. The compass is slightly bigger and light years better than the cherokee was 10 years ago. It features electronic variable valve timing that continually changes the torque curve, bringing more versatility to the 165 peak pound-feet of torque, and more capability to the 172 peak horsepower. The cvt is optional with the compass sport model, and standard on the limited, where autostick can be added to the cvt. Autostick enables the driver to shift up and down over six steps, making it feel like a six-speed gearbox without a clutch pedal. The combination of cvt with six-speed autostick is the best of both worlds, and works more precisely than the manual/automatic transmissions in many expensive sports sedans.  the safety, ride and handling of the compass are all excellent, with a strong steel structure and well-planned subframe. Side-curtain airbags and electronic stability control with anti-rollover sensors are standard. Although, in order to keep the advertised msrp down, air conditioning and power windows and locks are optional.  the styling is similar but sleeker than jeep's other small suv, the liberty, which uses a six-cylinder engine. There's good interior space all around, with rear seats that fold flat to make about 54 cubic feet of cargo space. Options for added versatility include reclining rear seats and a passenger front seat that also folds flat, creating either a table or eight-foot-long space for storage. lineupthe jeep compass lineup comes as two models, sport 15,425) and limited 19,580). It comes standard with a five speed manual or a cvt automatic 1000).  the sport model comes standard with an am/fm/cd player with auxiliary audio input jack. The front and rear fascia and side moldings have shiny aluminum accents.  options for the limited include the sport options, plus a six-speed autostick mode with the continuously variable transaxle 1150), a navigation system, hands-free bluetooth communication, chrome-plated 18-inch aluminum wheels 825) and the boston acoustics sound system 460).  safety features that come standard on all models include anti-lock brakes with brake assist (which applies more brake force than the driver is applying if sensors determine it's needed in a panic stop), electronic stability control (esp) with electronic roll mitigation (erm), and side-curtain air bags for head protection. Also standard are state-of-the-art seatbelts in all five positions, so be sure to wear them. Safety options include side airbags for the front seats 250) for torso protection in a side impact. A tire pressure monitoring system is available as part of a package. walkaroundmany won't be able to tell the compass from a liberty because the styling is so similar, especially in front with the classic jeep grille having seven vertical slots, but the differences are clear. The compass looks more like a crossover suv, especially from the sculpted side, with smoothly angular flares over the wheels, as opposed to the plastic cladding on most liberty models. The rear door handles are vertical, mounted on the c-pillars to preserve the character line.  the liftgate on the compass is sloped at nearly a 45-degree angle while the liberty's is vertical; and the third side window, into the cargo area, is a stylized triangle (leaving more sheetmetal and reducing visibility) while the liberty's window is, again, squared.  that slope at the rear of the compass is matched by the steeply raked windshield, leading up to a roof that's six inches lower than the liberty's. Black plastic roofrails continue from the top corners of the windshield all the way to the spoiler over the liftgate, channeling water over the roof.  the compass is one inch closer to the ground than the liberty. The more car-like styling and relative sleekness make the compass look longer than the liberty, but it's actually one inch shorter.  the compass limited has aluminum-looking trim on the sides and bumpers. The less-costly sport looks classier in its cleaner monotone. The optional 18-inch chromed aluminum wheels on the limited will appeal to those who want their jeep suv to look more like a cadillac escalade. interiorthe jeep compass cabin is roomy and comfortable. The front bucket seats are very comfortable without being soft. The front seat jacks upward, which is nice because the long dash makes it hard to see the ground in front of the car, even though the hood is short. The center stack is wide and intelligent: rectangular vents on top, over the one-disc am/fm/cd, over a slot that might hold a paperback book. Below that are three climate control knobs, some buttons and then the shift lever at the driver's right knee. Both the automatic and manual transaxle levers are mounted in this practical high forward position, introduced by honda after being copied from rally racing cars, where ergonomics matter.  moving rearward between the front seats, there are two fixed cupholders, the emergency brake handle, and a flip-up center console containing a slot for a cellphone or mp3 player. The console top is an armrest, and can be slid three inches to accommodate drivers of different sizes.  legroom is good, both front and rear: 39. 4 inches in the rear. The compass will be a fine vehicle for a family trip, with reclining rear seats, optional on sport and standard on limited. There are cupholders in the rear but no net pockets on the front seatbacks, which would be nice. Grab handles make it easy to climb out.  the rear 60/40 seats fold flat with the touch of a finger on each side, as easy as it gets. The front seat on the limited model folds flat, making a table. The rear cargo area, a decent 53. 6 cubic feeet with the rear seats folded, is covered by a rugged vinyl mat that's removable for washing. The space-saver spare tire is neatly stored under the mat. One innovative feature on the limited is the removable rechargable led flashlight mounted in the headliner above the cargo area.  the one-piece liftgate has panels for structural integrity, and the rear bumper has a non-skid rubber surface for stepping onto. driving impressionthe 2. 4-liter world engine is the right powerplant for the jeep compass. It uses the latest technology, including.

2002 bmw 5-series review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Quick and comfortable. introductionthough now in its sixth year of production for the current generation, the bmw 5 series sedans are the benchmarks other companies use for their luxury sports sedans. They offer much better handling than any sport-utility vehicle and better performance than most sedans. Judged logically, they make a lot more sense than bmw's own x5. lineupbmw's 5 series comprises three sedans and two wagons. Each model presents a distinct personality and price range, but all are wonderful cars in their own right. A v8-powered 540 is available along with six-cylinder 525 and 530 models.  retail prices for sedans: 525i 36,595); 530i 40,095); 540ia 51,745); 540i 54,545). Wagons: 525it 37,770); 540it 54,245).  525i, 530i, and 525it sport wagon come almost identically equipped with a long list of standard equipment and leatherette (vinyl) upholstery. Montana leather upholstery 1450) is optional. For 2002, the 525i, 525it, and 530i come standard with automatic air conditioning. A power front passenger's seat also is a standard feature on all six-cylinder 5 series sedans and wagons.  also for 2002, all 5 series vehicles come standard with an in-dash cd player.  other equipment changes for 2002 include the addition of a multi information display with a 10-function on-board computer and bmw universal transceiver (garage-door opener) for the 525i and 530i. The 530i also gets automatic headlight controls. This same headlight technology becomes standard equipment on 540i models. Five new exterior colors are offered for 2002.  525i, as its nomenclature suggests, comes with a 2. 5-liter fuel-injected six-cylinder engine. This is a double overhead-cam inline-6 with bmw's double vanos system, which means it has variable valve timing for strong power and good fuel economy at all speeds (184 horsepower and an epa-estimated 20/29 miles per gallon city/highway). For 2002, the sport package now includes power sport seats and an m sport steering wheel as well as 17-inch wheels with a new seven-spoke design.  530i comes with a more powerful 3. 0-liter six-cylinder engine that generates 225 horsepower and 214 pounds-feet of torque. For 2002, the sport package includes power sport seats.  all three models come standard with a getrag five-speed manual gearbox, though the ratios are specifically tuned for each. An optional five-speed automatic transmission 1275) is available that features adaptive shift logic and a steptronic shifter; the steptronic works just like a regular automatic in normal mode, but the driver can slap it over to the left and shift manually when desired for better control on winding roads or heavy commuter traffic.  540 models are powered by a 4. 4-liter v8. The 540 models come standard with montana leather upholstery, burl walnut trim, automatic air conditioning, xenon high-intensity discharge headlamps.  540ia is a luxury model that comes standard with the five-speed steptronic transmission, a self-leveling rear suspension, 16-inch wheels and 10-way power seats.  540i is a special sports model with a 6-speed manual gearbox, sports suspension with firmer springs and shock absorbers, specially tuned anti-roll bars, a lower ride height, and 17-inch wheels with larger rear tires. In addition to dual two-stage smart front airbags (that can detect whether someone is in the passenger seat, all models come with front door-mounted side-impact airbags and bmw's unique head protection system, which deploys tubular inflatable cushions in the areas of the front occupants' heads. Rear seat side-impact airbags 550 for sedans, $385 for wagons) are an option and can be activated and deactiv. walkarounda year ago, bmw revised the styling of the 5 series, including a reshaped front kidney-shaped grille, new front lighting units, a new front spoiler, new round front fog lights, new rear lighting clusters with red leds for improved reliability and longer service life, body-color side moldings and bumper strips. The overall shape of the 5 series body is a well-done evolution of a handsome basic design that dates back more than two decades.  5 series sport wagons differ visually from the sedans only aft of the c-pillar, where an extended roof and tailgate replace the sedan profile and trunk lid. The tailgate has a commendably low opening, giving access to the luggage bay right down to bumper-top level; if smaller items are to be loaded aboard, the rear glass can be raised separately. The 5 series sport wagons offer a larger cargo capacity than the new bmw x5 sport-utility.  the 5 series body shell is extremely rigid, a plus in terms of both safety and noise reduction. With its low 0. 30 coefficient of drag, the 5 series is one of the most aerodynamically efficient sedans on the market. Foam-filled body cavities and well-designed door seals help keep noise at bay. interiorthe 5 series interior gets high marks for comfort and appearance. The leatherette that comes standard on 525 and 530 models is attractive, with brushed-aluminum accents. Heated seats are available with a cold weather package 600 for sedans, $700 for wagons).  the 5 series center console is much more elegantly designed than the somewhat disappointing console in the 3 series cars. Perfunctory cupholders show bmw is still struggling, or is not concerned, with this most american of features.  studying the audio system owner's manual is needed to fully master the bmw business cd car radio as it's called. It automatically changes volume according to speed, ties into a cellular telephone, and has tuning features useful for traveling from city to city. It's a good-looking system with buttons linked to fields displayed digitally.  the map lights work very well, but a compass would be useful. It has all kinds of buttons on it to control audio and other functions that may require a trip to the owner's manual to fully master. driving impressionthe bmw 530i's engine is smooth and responsive. It glides along quietly when cruising, feeling like finely engineered machinery. Freedom from vibration is an inherent benefit of inline-6 engines, and bmw's are among the best.  nail the throttle and there's a growl akin to bmw's race engines. By comparison, a 525i accelerates from 0-60 in 7. 3 seconds with the manual, 8. 0 seconds with the automatic. At the same time, the 530i returns an epa-estimated 21/30 mpg city/highway, though that drops to just 18/26 mpg with an automatic transmission. All these bmw engines require premium unleaded fuel.  both the 2. 5-liter and 3-liter engines were updated for 2001: a fully electronic throttle system replaced the electromechanical type. As a result, throttle response is even more precise than before. Also, a new intake manifold and increased valve lift improve performance.  we've tested the 540i in the past and found the 32-valve v8 to be quiet and unobtrusive, making itself heard only when pushed hard. When pushed hard, it's powerful, covering 0-60 mph in less than six seconds with the manual, slightly more than six seconds with the automatic.  the 5 series bmws offer superb handling, regardless of suspension package and powerplant. They are true sports sedans, tracking precisely through corners with minimal body roll.  for the ultimate in razor-sharp road behavior, the sport suspension package is the choice. Stiffer springs and shock absorbers result in a slightly harsher ride quality, but enthusiasts may find this tradeoff in comfort is more than made up for by driving pleasure. Rippled pavement in downtown washington was quite noticeable through the seat of the pants. Power Seats✔ Heated Seats✔ Bucket Seats✔ CD Player✔ Air Conditioning✔ Sport Package

2002 audi a4 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Moving toward the front of the field. introductionfor years the audi a4 has been one of the best cars in its class. Completely redesigned for 2002, it gets even better.  some 90 percent of the a4's parts are revised, and there are significant improvements across the board. The new a4 is the first luxury-brand automobile with a continuously variable automatic transmission offered as an option. The cabin, the stereo, the electronic controls and the v6 engine-everything is bigger or more powerful. Perhaps best of all, audi promises to minimize price increases when the 2002 a4 reaches showrooms in october. Expect hikes of 3 percent or less.  audi's resurgence as a luxury brand has run concurrent with the a4. This compact sedan has been audi's bestseller since its introduction in 1995. A combination of thoughtful design, build quality, invigorating performance and sane pricing have made the a4 one of the most respected cars in a class that includes some of the best cars in the world. The standard-equipment list gets even longer for 2002, adding sophisticated anti-skid electronics (called esp for electronic stability program), dual-zone climate control with charcoal filtration, concealed headlight washers and a 150-watt, 10-speaker stereo with six-cd in-dash changer. Standard safety gear includes antilock brakes, dual front airbags that deploy at different rates depending on the severity of a crash, front side-impact airbags, and curtain-style head protection airbags on each side of the cabin. Quattro is one of the most sophisticated all-wheel-drive systems going, and one of audi's most popular options. (quattro adds $1750 to the retail price.) factor in optional automatic transmissions, and there are seven variants. A new six-speed manual for the a4 3. 0 is offered only with quattro (all front-drive 3. 0 models come with an automatic).  initially, the new a4 will be offered only as a sedan. An a4 avant, or wagon, based on the new sedan will follow within six months, while a twin-turbo s4 high-performance sedan will arrive within a year. In early calendar 2002, audi will offer gm's onstar telematics system, including emergency locating and lock-out service, accident alerting, theft tracking and various concierge services. walkaroundthe 2002 a4 is shaped in the signature bauhaus style established by the larger a6 sedan. It's less angular and more curvaceous than its predecessor. Its beltline is higher, its roof and side glass longer. From the headlights to the door handles to the rear bumper, flush is the theme.  little chrome or other adornments detract from the a4's basic shape--not even an antenna. (antennae for the radio, telematics and navigation systems are embedded into the rear glass.) the a4 takes styling cues from both the tt roadster and a6, including a more prominent chrome-trimmed grille and notched-in flush taillights. The new a4 may be too much the little a6, and not distinct enough it its own right.  the body panels cover lots of changes underneath. For starters, the new a4 is larger than the old. Wheelbase increases 2. 1 inches to 104. 3, and length 2. 7 inches to 179, for dimensions roughly comparable to the bmw 3 series or mercedes-benz c-class. The a4's unitized body and frame is 45 percent stiffer than it predecessor's, according to audi, yet substantially lighter. Thicker side windows -3 millimeters thicker--account for a three-decibel reduction in interior noise, by audi's measure. They may be more stylish or aerodynamic, but from the driver's seat they offer a smaller viewing range. We would sacrifice the look for wider coverage.  this is a still a compact sedan, yet the new design makes great use of the floor space. Every interior dimension is larger, but it's most obvious in the back seat, where taller passengers will find a bit more room to stretch their legs. There's room in back for three, with three-point harness at all positions, but average-size adults will feel much more comfortable with only two. The front seats adjust to accommodate people in the six-foot, five-inch range, and the view out is nearly unobstructed in every direction.  the theme inside the a4 is cool and efficient, as it is in audi's other sedans, and not deliberately snazzy in fashion of the tt. Materials look and feel richer than those in many cars in this price range, and trim matches flawlessly. A thick, grippy, leather-covered steering wheel and shift lever are standard, with a choice of fabric or leatherette (vinyl) upholstery. The cabin beltline is edged with aluminum in the 1. 8t and real wood in the 3. 0.  switches could be larger, yet those most frequently adjusted, including stereo volume, are large enough. After a bit of familiarization, everything in the a4 is easy to find with minimal distraction, and nearly all temperature, ventilation and stereo adjustments can be completed with buttons on the steering wheel hub. Audi's red and white gauge lighting, its warning lights and leds, are among the sharpest, most readable going. Its radial sunroof switch is the best; turn it a quarter, half or full turn and the roof opens a corresponding distance. Flow-control switches on each dash vent are illuminated. Wipers make a final sweep several seconds after the washer button is released, cleaning droplets blown back up the windshield. We found nothing to gripe about during a long drive through vermont's green mountains, with the possible exception of the seats. They are comfortable and supportive in nearly all circumstances. Yet a sedan this good should have buckets with more side bolstering to keep occupants firmly in the center.  the 2002 a4's trunk is among the largest in the class (13. 4 cubic feet, compared to 10. 7 in the bmw 3 series and 12. 2 in the mercedes c-class). Moreover, the lid swings high and backs for easy access. The cold-weather package includes a nylon ski sack that allows snow skis to slide through the trunk and into the cabin without leaving a damp mess. driving impressionwe tried all of the new a4s in the gorgeous green mountains, where the twisting roads climb up and down and are seldom clogged with traffic. Yet we spent the most time in the sportiest and-as in often the case-most expensive variant: the a4 3. 0 quattro. It was a pleasant, thoroughly satisfying experience.  audi's new 3. 0-liter v6 is a big improvement (though the old one was already pretty good), and it makes the a4 one of the more powerful cars in the class. Displacement has been increased 200 cubic centimeters. The new aluminum engine block is manufactured using the latest casting technology for maximum strength and durability, and audi remains the only luxury carmaker with advanced five-valve-per-cylinder technology across its product line.
