2001 dodge ram 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A heavy-duty full-size with everyday comfort. introductionthough it's now the oldest design among current full-size pickups, the dodge ram may still be the best-looking truck on the market. Clearly, it's the most stylish.  it drives and rides well with quick steering and excellent brakes. Five engines are offered: 3. 9-liter v6, 5. 2-liter v8, 5. 9-liter v8, 8. 0-liter v10 and two cummins 5. 9-liter diesel inline-6 choices. Every engine comes with a choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Short and long beds are available.  the 5. 2-liter v8 produces 230 horsepower, while the 5. 9-liter v8 generates 245 horsepower and an impressive 335 pounds-feet of torque. The basic cummins diesel produces 235 horsepower and 460 pounds-feet of torque, while the new-for-2001 high-output version cranks out 245 horsepower and a stump-pulling 505 pounds-feet of torque.  standard, club cab and quad cab bodies are available in lt, laramie slt, and sst trim levels. The bold design with broad-shouldered front fenders is reminiscent of big freightliners steaming down the road with a full load of logs. It remains the best-looking pickup on the market. To improve structural rigidity, dodge designed a beam that runs laterally under the truck, and reinforced both the a and c pillars. Side door guard beams were also added to improve protection from side impacts.  the optional sport package comes with a body-colored grille and front and rear bumpers, decals, fog lamps, outline white letter tires, and cast aluminum wheels. The absence of a b-pillar makes it much easier to get in or out of the rear seat; it also makes it much easier to stick something behind the front seats. This includes a new steering wheel design, a big storage compartment, an extra power point, and new cupholders designed to handle any commercially available drink container. Other recent improvements include a keyless remote entry system, an upgraded base sound system, a cassette and cd sound system option and a new center console. The instrument pod features vacuum-fluorescent odometer and trip odometer that are tamperproof, and there are driver-programmable keyless entry key fobs. Other interior features include heated power mirrors, illuminated power door locks and window switches, and an optional security alarm system.  the front seat in all rams is divided 40/20/40, with a huge fold-down center section that doubles as armrest and writing table. When no one is sitting in it, the center position provides a large storage box, with divided spaces for coins, cassettes, maps or a laptop computer. The front seat belts are integrated into the seats themselves, which gets rid of messy hanging belts -- a particularly nice improvement for the wide-open quad cab doorway.  the quad cab rear seat is the same one used in other extended cab versions. It's handy for children, pets and petite adults, but it is not very comfortable for adults on long trips. The bench portion of the seat flips up out of the way effortlessly from either side for hauling tools or cargo. The power window option comes with an express-down switch on the driver's side. Steering wheel mounted radio controls are optional. There are two new overhead console designs; one with and one without trip computer. This engine has a ton of torque and a broad power band, which makes it a great deal of fun to drive. Passing is effortless. The manual transmission can add flexibility in off-road situations, but we recommend the automatic for street use. Rear suspension is a conventional live axle with leaf springs designed to carry heavy loads. The dodge v8 pickup truck has for years had a special kind of presence on the street, and the ram backs up that presence with excellent street manners and ride.  steering revisions that were new last year make steering much more precise than earlier models. Steering in the earlier rams was light and quick, but had a lot of dead space on-center and seemed to require constant left-right adjustments.  braking, with discs in front, drums in rear, is exemplary. The ram stops quickly with superb straight-line stability. Recent improvements to the instrumentation, powertrain and body combinations have made it an all-around better truck.

2008 dodge grand caravan review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Redesigned for 2008, more safety, economy, utility. introductionthe 2008 dodge grand caravan is all new. It's a necessary redesign for dodge, to remain the leader of the minivan pack. It's a couple inches longer and 18 pounds lighter. There's more headroom but it's no taller. Aerodynamics are better and it's quieter inside. The redesigned rear suspension delivers a good ride. Electronic stability control is now standard. Making the time pass quickly. All the sheetmetal is new, as is the front fascia, rear fascia, and taillamps. The grand caravan looks more like a dodge truck, now, in the nose at least. The interior adds overhead storage and pinpoint led lighting.  options for the se include the g package 1750) with cruise control, tinted side glass, rear climate control, and a bigger alternator. The h package 3740 ) includes everything in the g package, plus yes essentials fabric, second-row power windows and third-row power vented windows, 60/40 third-row bench, trip computer, heated mirrors, remote starting and adjustable pedals. There's also a power and remote entry group 1995), including power sliding doors on both sides, power liftgate, eight-way power driver's seat, and driver's lumbar manual support. The m package 3785) includes hands-free phone, rear climate controls, second- and third-row window shades, cabin air filter, automatic headlamps, backup camera, backup beeper, and 17-inch aluminum wheels.  the n package 7290) starts out with the 4. 0-liter single-overhead-cam v6 engine. Most of the rest of it is about deluxe entertainment. Mygig, dvd screens for both the second and third rows, wireless headsets and remote control, sirius radio, and an infinity sound system with nine amplified speakers and subwoofer. The second-row seats swivel to face the third-row 60/40 bench seat, with an easily stowable table between them. Side-impact airbags are not available. A description of the overall shape of the 2008 dodge grand caravan wouldn't sound too much different from a description of the 1982 model. People don't buy minivans so others will look and say, 'that's the new minivan. Some styling!'  so the styling of the redesigned 2008 grand caravan doesn't represent a sea change. But it is clearly different. It looks fresh, as the old styling is ubiquitous. All the sheetmetal is new, as is the front fascia, rear fascia, and taillamps.  it's more aerodynamic, although it seems boxier because of the nose, which now looks more like it's in the dodge family. It's attractive in a suv-ish kind of way. The hood is less sloped than before, and it bears character lines. Sixteen-inch wheels are standard, an increase over the previous 15s. They're boring looking, but the optional five-spoke 17s are better.  the wheelbase of the new grand caravan is 1. 9 inches longer, and the overall length stretched 2. 5 inches, so the overhangs are about the same. The front track has been widened by 2. 5 inches, and the rear by 0. 8 inches, without widening the vehicle at its sides. However the roof has been widened by 6 inches, allowing more overall interior room. Interestingly, the front track is now wider than the rear, a reversal from the previous generation. interiordodge grand caravan leads the minivan field when it comes to interior convenience, capability and versatility. The dvd was a snap to play, unlike, for example, those in some expensive audis. The screen drops down from the ceiling, so the driver loses some visibility in the rearview mirror. Or they flop forward with one lever. For a fairly simple invention, it's a masterpiece. In just a minute or so, and without having to refer to the manual, we dropped the second and third seats flat into the floor. Picked up a long leather couch at the used furniture store. From soccer bus to cargo van, in 60 seconds. We don't need no dodge sprinter van. Well, maybe if we want to load the whole team of 10 kids. Other information includes distance to empty (about 400 miles on a tank of gas), compass, outside temp. 2000 dodge dakota review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. This truck is just right. introductiongoldilocks would have liked the dodge dakota. Some people find large, full-sized pickups too big, and smaller, compact trucks too small. Club cabs are only available with two doors.  choose from three trim levels: base, sport and slt. Base regular cab 2wd retails for $13,555; sport regular cab 2wd goes for $14,860; and slt regular cab sells for $16,975. Sport trim adds better seats and interior trim and upgrades to the exterior. The 4. 7-liter is new to the dakota line this year. New color choices: dark garnet, red pearl coat, sierra bronze pearl coat, amber fire pearl coat, and patriot blue pearl coat.  limited-production r/t models come with a high-performance version of the 5. 9-liter v8. Available on 2wd regular or club cabs, the dakota r/t sport group includes aggressive (255/55r17) tires mounted on 17-inch aluminum wheels, heavy-duty stabilizer bars, and a limited-slip rear differential. The r/t is lowered 1 inch. The package adds bucket seats, fog lights, special trim and a long list of convenience items. It adds $2,410 to a club cab and $2,370 to a regular cab. walkarounddakota features the freightliner styling of the bigger dodge ram. Bold lines give it a big, burley look, like it's ready to take on anything that comes its way.  regular and club cabs have a 6-ft. 6-in. Bed - a good size for a compact truck. The quad cab, on the other hand, has a 5-ft. 3-in. According to dodge, people seldom need the full length of the longer bed. Those who need more cargo space can consider an optional bed extender -an aluminum cage that flips over the lowered tailgate to extend the bed by 18 inches. It adds utility, but it isn't like having a full-sized bed. The driver sits high and there are no obvious blind spots. Optional 6x9-inch mirrors improve visibility rearward.  the quad cab is roomy and comfortable. The front seat is 40/20/40 split. The wide console dodge has been using in ram and dakota pickups works well for storage area, but it gets in the way when fastening seat belts. A pullout cup holder at the foot of the center section is a nice touch. Children and smaller adults should be happy back there, but taller folk will find the space confining. A better use for this space is to fold the rear 60/40 split bench seats entirely out of the way for a nice, secure storage area. It also features a trip computer and odometer that reports fuel economy and fuel tank range. There was a considerable amount of wind noise, which was overpowered by that wonderful sound system. Once in the owens valley we hooked up with a couple of fly fishers and headed for the river.  the driver and front seat passenger had tons of legroom. The rear doors are fairly wide - about 37 inches. That, coupled with the fact that there is no cutout in them for the rear wheel-well (like there is in many suvs), makes getting in and out of the rear seat relatively easy. It also means the rear windows roll all the way down.  the floor-mounted transfer case lever (dodge doesn't offer push-button 4wd on the dakota) is easy to reach and operate. We hit one particularly sandy section and slipped easily into 4wd without dropping speed. Later, on a steep hill, we pulled the transfer case into 4wd-low and easily walked up a hill that had a good 15-degree grade.  on washboard sections of hard-packed dirt roads in 2wd, the backend had a tendency to fishtail - common in unloaded pickups. It exhibited similar tendencies in radical transient maneuvers on dry pavement. The brakes delivered straight and true stopping power. We were impressed with the quad cab's turning radius. For a truck its length, it makes relatively tight turns.  dodge claims its new 4. 7-liter v8 590), designed from a clean sheet of paper, is the most refined v8 ever offered on a dodge truck. It's a powerful little devil, rated at 235 horsepower and 295 foot-pounds of torque. This transmission was designed in tandem with the 4. 7-liter engine and they are precisely calibrated to each other. Its onboard computer continuously adjusts the shift pattern to match the way the truck is driven. A tall first gear ratio gives the driver better initial acceleration. It selects one of two second-gear ratios based on load and driver input. Its reverse gear uses a ratio equal to the first gear, beneficial when backing up with a heavy trailer. summarydodge dakota is a solid, well-built truck i found fun to drive. 2001 dodge dakota review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The baby bear would love this one. introductiondodge dakota takes the middle ground in terms of size. Some people find full-size pickups too big, and smaller, compact trucks too small. For them, the dakota seems just right. The dakota is larger than the ford ranger, chevy s-10, gmc sonoma, toyota tacoma and other so-called compact pickups, but it's not quite as big as a ford f-150 or chevy silverado.  for 2001, the biggest news is a redesigned interior with a more car-like feel. lineupdodge dakota is available in three cab configurations: regular cab, club cab, and quad cab. Club cabs are only available with two doors.  choose from three trim levels: base, sport and slt. Base regular cab 2wd retails for $13,910; sport regular cab 2wd goes for $14,695; and slt regular cab sells for $16,810. Sport trim adds better seats and interior trim and upgrades to the exterior. The 4. 7-liter was new to the dakota line last year. It adds $2,420 to a club cab and $2,380 to a regular cab. walkarounddakota shares its freightliner styling with the full-size dodge ram. Bold lines give it a big, burley look, like it's ready to take on anything that comes its way.  regular and club cabs have a 6-foot 6-inch bed - a good size for a compact truck. The quad cab, on the other hand, has a 5-foot 3-inch bed. According to dodge, people seldom need the full length of the longer bed. Those who need more cargo space can consider an optional bed extender -an aluminum cage that flips over the lowered tailgate to extend the bed by 18 inches. Sometimes the bed extender works great, but a lowered tailgate with a mesh opening won't hold dirt back like longer bed with a solid tailgate. The instrument panel is easier to reach and easier to use, and almost all of the switchgear has changed. One example is the new rotary dial for the electronic transfer case, replacing the lever used previously. Door trim and carpeting are updated, as are the center and overhead consoles. Leather is now optional on quad cab. The driver sits high and there are no obvious blind spots. Optional 6x9-inch mirrors improve visibility rearward. The quad cab is roomy and comfortable. The front seat is a 40/20/40 split. The wide console works well as a storage area for miscellaneous junk, but it gets in the way when fastening seat belts. A pullout cup holder at the foot of the center section is a nice touch. Getting in and out of the rear seat is aided by the fact that there is no cutout for the rear wheels (like there is in many sport-utilities). There's good knee room, but not a lot of foot space for stretching legs. Like most of the smaller crew cab pickups, the rear seat back is bolt upright, and not very comfortable. There's plenty of headroom in the rear seats, however. Children and smaller adults should be happy back there, but taller folk will find the space confining. Unlike some suvs, the rear windows on the quad cab roll all the way down.  a better use for the rear of the quad cab is to fold the rear 60/40 split bench seats entirely out of the way for a nice, secure storage area. Not all compact trucks allow the seats to be folded out of the way like these on the dodge. It also features a trip computer and odometer that reports fuel economy and fuel tank range. The console is part of the overhead convenience group 1160) and includes compartments for sunglasses and garage door openers, auto-dimming rearview mirror and map lights. driving impressionthe dodge dakota sport 4x4 quad cab is smooth and comfortable. Wind noise is a companion at higher speeds.  the rotary dial for transfer case is easy to reach and operate. We hit one particularly sandy section and switched easily into 4wd without dropping speed. Later, on a steep hill, we switched into 4wd-low and easily walked up a hill that had a good 15-degree grade.  on washboard sections of hard-packed dirt roads in 2wd, the back end has a tendency to lose grip at speed - common in unloaded pickups. We were impressed with the quad cab's turning radius. For a truck its length, it makes relatively tight turns.  the brakes deliver straight and true stopping power. It's a powerful little devil, rated at 235 horsepower and 295 foot-pounds of torque. The 4. 7-liter engine can be paired with a five-speed manual or dodge's new 'multi-speed' automatic transmission. 2007 dodge caliber review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new compact boasts innovative design and features. introductiondodge has introduced a remarkable replacement for the neon. There's also a choice of front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, the latter making the caliber a capable winter vehicle. The caliber is relatively affordable. Its starting price is below last year's neon, and fuel economy is respectable, achieving 28/32 city/highway miles per gallon in its most frugal form, according to federal government estimates. At the other end of the scale, an srt4 version is expected in spring 2007 with a turbocharged engine generating 300 horsepower.  the front seats are comfortable, with lots of headroom, and there's a large amount of cargo space here. Packaging is functional, with folding rear seats that have an optional reclining adjustment and an optional fold-flat front passenger seat to make room for a ladder or more likely, a surfboard. A couple of innovative options, especially for a car in this price class, are an air conditioned compartment in the glove box to chill water bottles or sodas and a swing-down stereo speaker panel attached to the liftgate that converts the back end to a sound stage for beach parties or tailgating.  the caliber is no sports car, but we most enjoyed the mid-level sxt model with the 2. 0-liter engine and five-speed manual transmission.  dodge is gambling a huge chunk of change on the hope new car shoppers looking for value and function can be persuaded hatchbacks are acceptable again, that five-door, small wagons have a place in american garages. The first two are available with a five-speed manual or an automatic continuously variable transmission.  the se 13,425) comes with the 1. 8-liter engine and five-speed manual transmission. The 2. 0-liter engine is optional 100), and both engines are available with the cvt automatic 1000). Air conditioning is not standard, nor are power windows. The se comes with manual roll-up windows and manual outside mirrors.  options for the se are as extensive as the standard equipment is basic. The power equipment group 545) includes power windows, outside mirrors and keyless remote central locking. There are two uplevel stereos, one adding cassette and mp3 capability and six-disc cd changer 420), the other just mp3 and the six-disc changer 320). Two other audio options are available, sirius satellite radio 195), including a pre-paid, one-year subscription, and a speaker package called musicgate power 435) comprising a boston acoustics sound system with nine speakers. A trailer tow group 130) adds an engine oil cooler and a wiring harness.  the sxt 15,425) also comes standard with the 1. 8-liter engine and five-speed manual, with the 2. 0-liter engine and cvt optional, but the list of standard features expands dramatically. Seat heaters can be ordered for the cloth seats 250). Cruise control is available 250), as is a sunroof 750), and uconnect, a bluetooth, hands-free cell phone capability 275). A driver convenience group 400) adds a compass, an ambient temperature gauge, homelink, auto-dimming inside mirror and a tire pressure monitoring system. A security group 275) includes the cargo area cover, an alarm and an air filtration system. A sport package 645) includes fog lamps, 17-inch aluminum wheels and a sport appearance interior group with contrasting inserts on the cloth seats and color-keyed instrument bezels and gear indicator for the automatic transmission. Aluminum wheels are available 400). Audio options and other items listed above are also available.  the r/t 19,425) comes standard with the 2. 4-liter engine, the cvt, and all-wheel drive. Standard features include the sxt features, the sport appearance interior group, cruise control, leather-clad steering wheel with audio controls, cargo cover, a sport suspension with performance steering and p215/55r18 all-season performance tires on aluminum wheels. Massive headlights are notched into the leading corners of the front fenders. A pouting lower lip-like bumper separates the grille and headlights from a slimmer, lower air intake and (uplevel) fog lamps.  the side view shows strongly blistered fenders front and rear beneath a wedge-shaped beltline. The lower portions of the doors wear longitudinal moldings, again, body color or chrome highlighted, that look like a bi-level rocker panel but aren't, but that nevertheless minimize the caliber's height. Full-round door handles, either chrome-trimmed or body color, bridge scooped-out grip spaces.  the roofline arcs cleanly from its junction with the hood just aft of the front wheel well over the side door windows to pinch off at the tail end of the rear quarter glass. Topping this arc but stopping at the top of the backlight (rear windscreen) is an unbroken, thick strip of black molding the caliber's designers say is supposed to work with the arc and the truncated back end to impart a coupe look. We're not sure why that was important or that it necessarily succeeds, but it does buff up the caliber's side aspect.  the back end pulls from the magnum, too, with a steeply raked backlight beneath a roof-mounted spoiler and above a mostly upright lower liftgate, employing a hatchback style arguing against any comparisons with a traditional station wagon. A relatively short rear overhang and oversize taillight housings add credence to the argument. interiorstep inside the caliber and the dodge legacy is loud and clear. Gauges are large, round and gleefully legible. The center stack presents the stereo face and climate control panel in stark relief with functional knobs, buttons and switches and trimmed in matte metallic plastic or not-very-convincing wood grain.  the shift lever extends from the base of the stack; the notched gate on the cvt makes ratio selections intuitive, the manual gearbox less so, but not bad for a front-wheel-drive. The power point serves neither the cell phone holder nor a radar detector well; located at the extreme base of the center stack, it leaves cords either draped over the center console's cup holders or dangling down the dash between the instrument cluster and the center stack.  the mp3 player/cell phone holder flips up out of the front of the center console armrest and, while properly sized for an ipod or similarly shaped mp3 device, adapts best to candy bar-style cell phones. This eases climbing in and out.  the front seats are comfortable, but far from plush, with decently bolstered back cushions. Bottom cushions, or squabs in designer lingo, are more flat than sculpted and a bit short on thigh support. Front-seat headroom is impressive, topping the five-door mazda3 hatchback by almost two inches, the five-door ford focus zx5 hatchback by almost an inch. It falls short of the pontiac vibe and toyota matri.

2005 dodge durango review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Believe it or not, refinement. introductionthe dodge durango is big and powerful with bold styling. Yet it's surprisingly refined, benefiting from a complete redesign for the 2004 model year. It's quiet, it rides smoothly, and its handling is stable and relatively agile. Efficient packaging has resulted in lots of cabin space for people and cargo.  the first-generation durango was rough around the edges, but the current model is far more refined. Inside is a quiet, roomy, comfortable and technologically sophisticated cabin. Bigger than the first-generation models, the durango now fits between the chevy tahoe and ford expedition in terms of size. A space-efficient design makes maximum use of the durango's size and it can seat up to seven passengers with the optional third row.  two v8s are available and both are superb. The popular 4. 7-liter v8 and the 5. 7-liter hemi v8 are smooth and powerful. They come with a five-speed automatic that's smooth, refined, smart and responsive. There's also a v6.  the 2005 durango lineup adds new sxt and adventurer models and the availability of heated cloth seats and a full-screen navigation system. lineupthe 2005 dodge durango features an expanded model line: st, slt, limited, and the new stx and adventurer models. A full-size spare is standard on all durangos. The 4. 7-liter v8 is optional. Also available are a bigger alternator and battery, an am/fm stereo radio with six-disc in-dash cd and mp3 player, traction control, halogen headlamps, heavy-duty shocks and springs, a two-speed transfer case (low and high gears for 4wd), side curtain airbags and a sunroof.  the stx package adds roof side rails, neutral-density gray body side moldings, running boards, and a six-disc cd changer. Aluminum wheels are available.  the slt 29,150) is available with an optional third-row seat (for seven-passenger seating). Slt comes standard with the 4. 7-liter v8. Optional is the 335-horsepower 5. 7-liter hemi v8 895). Both engines use the same five-speed automatic transmission. The v6 is also available.  the slt 4x4 32,130), the best-selling model, upgrades with body-colored moldings and fascia, a power driver's seat, interior wood trim, rear air conditioning, fog lamps and roof rails. Options include leather, satellite radio, power sunroof, power-adjustable pedals, running boards, a hands-free phone system and a dvd entertainment system with wireless headphones.  adventurer includes a roof rack with a choice of six rack systems or an adventurer accessory kit. The package also includes tubular side steps, reversible slush mats, rubberized washable cargo liner with built-in rear cargo organizer, and unique machine-finished wheels. The subtle mineral gray side molding and front and rear fascias visually identify the adventurer.  limited 33,300) and limited 4x4 35,590) add leather seats, a 384-watt eight-speaker mp3 sound system with six-disc cd, aluminum wheels, folding power heated mirrors, and a memory system for seats, mirrors, adjustable pedals. A full-screen navigation system with integrated control unit is optional.  safety features include optional curtain air bags, and we recommend them highly for the head protection they can provide to occupants in all three rows in the event of a side impact or rollover accident. Side-impact air bags are not available, however. The advanced front air bags deploy with varying power based on the weight of the person in the seat. Traction control is optional. Electronic stability control is not available. Redesigned for 2004, the durango takes styling cues come from the 1946 dodge power wagon.  durango's big-rig look is accentuated by its short hood. That short hood leads into a steeply raked windshield and sloping roof. The fender flares resemble those of a semi. The front fenders make the hood look as narrow as it is short.  the roofline slopes briefly downward at the rear, and the liftgate window curves in to meet it. This reduces that boxy look common on so many suvs and minivans. Durango's taillights are distinctive as well, looking like afterburners from a jet fighter with two big red stacked circles per side. The sheet metal is molded around them to suggest speed.  chrysler has an expensive new wind tunnel at its headquarters in auburn hills, michigan, and it was used extensively with the durango to reduce wind noise. The aerodynamics are fine tuned, including the mirrors and the subtle ducktail at the trailing edge of the hood under the wipers, for reducing wind noise over the windshield. The motor mounts were calibrated to reduce the frequencies and harmonics of each engine. The windows have an extra layer of lamination to deaden sound. Foam is injected into many of the body and chassis crannies, which would otherwise serve as tiny echo chambers. interiorwith a large amount of glass and huge cargo space, the durango feels big spacious. It's officially classified as a mid-size suv, like the explorer, but it's bigger than that and everything about it feels like a full-size.  there is 68 cubic feet with the third row folded away, 102 cubic feet with the second row down. The distance between the wheel housings is 48 inches, good for loading wide cargo. And from the outside, the liftgate opens very easily. The cargo floor is relatively low thanks to the rear suspension design.  the second and third rows are notably easy to access, as the rear doors open an exceptionally wide 84 degrees. The second-row seat easily flips forward with the touch of one hand, and the seatback flops flat just as easily. This is no small virtue.  the second-row seats recline and have their own climate control, so back-seat passengers can snooze in comfort. Details are thought out, including convenient grab handles cleverly molded into the stubby rear leg of the second-row seat, which ease climbing back to the third row. The slt has orange-hued wood trim, while the limited presents a cleaner look with its brushed aluminum. (that's real wood and real aluminum, not plastic.)  instrumentation is clean, handsome, easy to read and easy to operate. We especially like the simple black-on-white gauges and rectangular black venetian-blind style heating and cooling vents. The center console is deep, under a removable tray. Forward of that is another important compartment designed to serve as a fast-food bin. Two integrated cup holders with removable neoprene for different sizes of drink containers are provided.  we found the slt's manual heating controls and the wiper controls a bit fussy, and the high beams seemed a little lacking one wintry night. Better are the limited model's high-tech climate-control panel with automatic temperature adjustment. It's smooth and quiet, quite different from the relatively noisy, rough-riding pre-2004 models. Both v8 engines are good choices.  the 4. 7-liter engine is really good. It's powerful and really smooth. The 4. 7-liter v8 is rated at 230 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. But it only gets 14/18 mpg in 4wd, using 87 octane, and the more we looked at that versus the 5. 7-liter hemi, the more we gravitated to the bigger engine.  the 5. 7-liter hemi is rated at 335 horsepower and 370 pound-feet of torque. That's a lot more power than the 4. 7-liter while providing almost the same economy, 13/18 mpg with 89 octane recommended, 87 acceptable. For $895 more, the hemi seems like a no-brainer; plus, it can tow up to 8,950 pounds with the optional 3. 92 rear axle, compared to 7,400 for the 4. 7. And the two-speed transfer case is standard with the hemi 4x4, optional with the other engines.  hemi, by the way, refers to the overhead-valve, hemispherical combustion chamber design, and harkens back to the late '60s when the 426-cubic-inch (7. 0-liter) dodge hemi ramcharger ruled. The 5. 7-liter felt a little more powerful than the 4. 7-liter, but it wasn't a night-and-day difference. The double overhead-cam, 5. 6-liter, 305-horsepower nissan armada feels like it has more oomph than the 5. 7-liter durango, which feels solid, but heavy.  for its part, the 3. 7-liter v6 is rated at 210 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque and 16/21 mpg. The shifts were incr.
