2004 bmw x5 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Freshened styling and a new 4. 8is model. introductionothers have followed, but the bmw x5 invented a class. As bmw's 3 series defines the sport sedan, the x5 defines an expanding group of big, powerful suvs that shine for their on-pavement agility and lightning acceleration, with an emphasis on luxury appointments. Climb out of a truck-based luxury suv like the cadillac escalade, and the x5 feels as capable on the road as the big bmw 7 series sedan (even though it isn't).  improvements for 2004 are more extensive than any since the x5 was introduced five years ago. And a new high-performance 4. 8is model has been added to the lineup.  logic? The x5 is 2. 5 tons of speed, comfort and prestige. It's quicker away from traffic lights than most cars, and capable of nearly 150 mph, though we certainly don't recommend driving a vehicle this tall that fast. Its steering is precise and it's exceptionally stable at supra-legal speeds. Massive tires contribute to impressive cornering grip and stopping power. A big v8 delivers the ultimate x5 thrill, but it's also available with an outstanding six-cylinder.  that trademark bmw twin-kidney grille indicates its owner is successful. It also indicates bmw's reputation for quality and driving excitement. Moreover, the x5 delivers most of the attributes that made suvs popular in the first place. It works well in foul weather and easily negotiates muddy trails. It looks tough and polished at the same time.  now let's get back to logic. Bmw says the x5 is designed for all roads, meaning superhighways, graded gravel or logging trails. In fact, the x5 is not capable off road, not when measured against sport-utilities that are capable. Though it handles well for an suv, its weight and height simply won't allow it the quick transient response of a sport sedan or sport wagon in the same price range. Compared to other bmws, the x5 is not the ultimate driving machine, and its fuel mileage is poor in comparison. It also costs more than some comparably equipped, very good luxury suvs.  for 2004, the x5's look has been freshened, with a redesigned front end, new taillights and new wheel designs. Mechanically, both manual and automatic transmissions have been upgraded to six-speeds, with a more powerful v8 and a new, more sophisticated all-wheel-drive system called xdrive. There's more standard equipment, including rain-sensing wipers and a power passenger seat in all models, and new options like heated rear seats on the six-cylinder x5. New for 2004 is bmw assist, a telematic system with automatic accident notification and other premium services.    forget rational vs. While the 3. 0i and 4. 4i have added standard equipment and more technology for 2004, their prices reflect an increase of $1,445 and $2,245 respectively compared to 2003, keeping with bmw's trend toward some of the biggest prices increases in the auto industry this year.  the x5 3. 0i is powered by bmw's classic 3. 0-liter inline-6 engine, producing 225 horsepower. Standard equipment includes adjustable power front seats with driver's position memory electronically tagged to the key, remote keyless entry, power windows that can be opened with the key fob, cruise control, cabin-air filtration, a universal garage door transmitter, 17-inch alloy wheels and a tow-hitch receiver. For 2004, the standard manual transmission has been upgraded to a six-speed, while the leatherette (vinyl) upholstery remains.  the x5 4. 4i adds bmw's powerful 4. 4-liter v8 engine, which adds 33 horsepower this year for a total of 315, matched with a new six-speed automatic. The 4. 4i is now almost as powerful as last year's 4. 6is. The 4. 4i also adds dual-zone climate control with rear-seat adjustments, leather upholstery, self-leveling air suspension and 18-inch wheels.  the new x5 4. 8is is an ultra high-performance model that features a 4. 8-liter v8 engine that produces 355-horsepower and 360 pounds-feet of torque, coupled with a six-speed steptronic automatic transmission. It comes with 20-inch w-rated performance tires (275/40 front and 315/35 in the rear). The moonroof, for example, can be ordered separately 1,059), but it's also included in the premium package, which also adds auto-dim mirrors, adjustable rear seat backs, lumbar support, an onboard computer and the bmw assist telematics package to the 4. 4i 2,500), plus leather to the 3. 0i 3,900). The sport package 2,500 for the 3. 0i, $1,600 for 4. 4i) includes a firmer sport suspension, sport steering wheel, 18-inch alloy wheels (for the 3. 0i), sport seats, black chrome exhaust and a titanium colored grilled. The cold weather package 750) includes heated front seats, ski bag and headlight washers. The rear climate package 600 for the 3. 0i, $400 for 4. 4i) brings rear privacy glass, rear side-window blinds and rear climate control adjustment for the 3. 0i. Popular stand alone options include a five-speed automatic transmission 1,275) and the bi-xenon headlamps 800) for the x5 3. 0i, and a premium stereo with 12 speakers, two subwoofers and digital signal processing 1,200). A retractable load floor 380) and satellite navigation 1800) are extra-cost options on all x5 models. Bmw assist 750) provides telematic collision notification, an sos button, roadside assistance, locator and concierge services. An annual subscription 240) must be paid after the first year.  all x5s come with full-time all-wheel drive and dynamic stability control, which includes traction control, electronic brake proportioning, an electronic stability program, and hill descent control.  passive safety was a major development goal for the x5, which can be ordered with no fewer than eight airbags. Each front-seat occupant gets a front airbag, a side thorax airbag and a curtain-style head protection airbag. Bmw's head protection system extends these curtains the full length of the cabin, protecting outside rear passengers as well. Rear-seat side impact airbags are optional 385). Moreover, the x5's unit-body has been design for maximum energy dissipation in heavy impacts. According to bmw, it performed better than any vehicle ever tested by the insurance institute for highway safety (iihs) in its 40-mph offset crash test, which simulates the most. walkaroundthe 2004 bmw x5 feature freshened styling cues, though no one is likely to mistake it for something other than the familiar x5. From the windshield forward, all of the sheet metal is new for 2004. Side by side with a 2003 x5, the changes for 2004 are noticeable.  there's no question who builds this vehicle. The bmw x5 looks like a 5 series wagon on steroids, and is remarkably close to the wagon in overall size. From its kidney-shaped grille to its multi-segmented tail lights, the curvy x5 is all bimmer. The slope of the tailgate matches that on the 5 series wagon. The major difference is that the x5 is 10 inches taller than the 5 series wagon, which creates a key component of its sport-utility character. Large-diameter wheels with low-profile tires enhance its aggressive appearance.  the new bmw x5 4. 8is sports a unique front air dam, body kit, and huge wheels and tires.  truck-based suvs, such as the mercedes-benz m-class, are built with a separate body bolted onto a boxed ladder frame. The x5, however, uses a monocoque body shell like that of a regular sedan. This unit-body construction provides a much stiffer structure, which improves handling, reduces noise and allows better fit and finish, though many consider the design less rugged and durable. The x5 is not the first unit-body suv, and many more have followed. With a few notable exceptions (such as the jeep grand cherokee), unit-body suvs tend to be like the x5, with on-pavement performance taking precedence over off-road ability. interiorthe x5 has a great interior. Typically bmw, it's all business and no nonsense, but it's also very luxurious. The 3. 0i comes standard with leatherette (vinyl) upholstery, but leather is an option. The door handles have a nice brushed-aluminum finish, and the soft plastic surfaces feel more like leather. The switchgear is ergonomically well designed. Available steering wheel controls allow a number of adjustments, including climate, stereo and integrated phone without removing a hand from the wheel.  despite the x5's high seats, many drivers will drop the bottom cushion down, and that can obscure much of the exterior from view, not to mention stuff located a few feet around it. 2002 bmw 5-series review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Quick and comfortable. introductionthough now in its sixth year of production for the current generation, the bmw 5 series sedans are the benchmarks other companies use for their luxury sports sedans. They offer much better handling than any sport-utility vehicle and better performance than most sedans. Judged logically, they make a lot more sense than bmw's own x5. lineupbmw's 5 series comprises three sedans and two wagons. Each model presents a distinct personality and price range, but all are wonderful cars in their own right. A v8-powered 540 is available along with six-cylinder 525 and 530 models.  retail prices for sedans: 525i 36,595); 530i 40,095); 540ia 51,745); 540i 54,545). Wagons: 525it 37,770); 540it 54,245).  525i, 530i, and 525it sport wagon come almost identically equipped with a long list of standard equipment and leatherette (vinyl) upholstery. Montana leather upholstery 1450) is optional. For 2002, the 525i, 525it, and 530i come standard with automatic air conditioning. A power front passenger's seat also is a standard feature on all six-cylinder 5 series sedans and wagons.  also for 2002, all 5 series vehicles come standard with an in-dash cd player.  other equipment changes for 2002 include the addition of a multi information display with a 10-function on-board computer and bmw universal transceiver (garage-door opener) for the 525i and 530i. The 530i also gets automatic headlight controls. This same headlight technology becomes standard equipment on 540i models. Five new exterior colors are offered for 2002.  525i, as its nomenclature suggests, comes with a 2. 5-liter fuel-injected six-cylinder engine. This is a double overhead-cam inline-6 with bmw's double vanos system, which means it has variable valve timing for strong power and good fuel economy at all speeds (184 horsepower and an epa-estimated 20/29 miles per gallon city/highway). For 2002, the sport package now includes power sport seats and an m sport steering wheel as well as 17-inch wheels with a new seven-spoke design.  530i comes with a more powerful 3. 0-liter six-cylinder engine that generates 225 horsepower and 214 pounds-feet of torque. For 2002, the sport package includes power sport seats.  all three models come standard with a getrag five-speed manual gearbox, though the ratios are specifically tuned for each. An optional five-speed automatic transmission 1275) is available that features adaptive shift logic and a steptronic shifter; the steptronic works just like a regular automatic in normal mode, but the driver can slap it over to the left and shift manually when desired for better control on winding roads or heavy commuter traffic.  540 models are powered by a 4. 4-liter v8. The 540 models come standard with montana leather upholstery, burl walnut trim, automatic air conditioning, xenon high-intensity discharge headlamps.  540ia is a luxury model that comes standard with the five-speed steptronic transmission, a self-leveling rear suspension, 16-inch wheels and 10-way power seats.  540i is a special sports model with a 6-speed manual gearbox, sports suspension with firmer springs and shock absorbers, specially tuned anti-roll bars, a lower ride height, and 17-inch wheels with larger rear tires. In addition to dual two-stage smart front airbags (that can detect whether someone is in the passenger seat, all models come with front door-mounted side-impact airbags and bmw's unique head protection system, which deploys tubular inflatable cushions in the areas of the front occupants' heads. Rear seat side-impact airbags 550 for sedans, $385 for wagons) are an option and can be activated and deactiv. walkarounda year ago, bmw revised the styling of the 5 series, including a reshaped front kidney-shaped grille, new front lighting units, a new front spoiler, new round front fog lights, new rear lighting clusters with red leds for improved reliability and longer service life, body-color side moldings and bumper strips. The overall shape of the 5 series body is a well-done evolution of a handsome basic design that dates back more than two decades.  5 series sport wagons differ visually from the sedans only aft of the c-pillar, where an extended roof and tailgate replace the sedan profile and trunk lid. The tailgate has a commendably low opening, giving access to the luggage bay right down to bumper-top level; if smaller items are to be loaded aboard, the rear glass can be raised separately. The 5 series sport wagons offer a larger cargo capacity than the new bmw x5 sport-utility.  the 5 series body shell is extremely rigid, a plus in terms of both safety and noise reduction. With its low 0. 30 coefficient of drag, the 5 series is one of the most aerodynamically efficient sedans on the market. Foam-filled body cavities and well-designed door seals help keep noise at bay. interiorthe 5 series interior gets high marks for comfort and appearance. The leatherette that comes standard on 525 and 530 models is attractive, with brushed-aluminum accents. Heated seats are available with a cold weather package 600 for sedans, $700 for wagons).  the 5 series center console is much more elegantly designed than the somewhat disappointing console in the 3 series cars. Perfunctory cupholders show bmw is still struggling, or is not concerned, with this most american of features.  studying the audio system owner's manual is needed to fully master the bmw business cd car radio as it's called. It automatically changes volume according to speed, ties into a cellular telephone, and has tuning features useful for traveling from city to city. It's a good-looking system with buttons linked to fields displayed digitally.  the map lights work very well, but a compass would be useful. It has all kinds of buttons on it to control audio and other functions that may require a trip to the owner's manual to fully master. driving impressionthe bmw 530i's engine is smooth and responsive. It glides along quietly when cruising, feeling like finely engineered machinery. Freedom from vibration is an inherent benefit of inline-6 engines, and bmw's are among the best.  nail the throttle and there's a growl akin to bmw's race engines. By comparison, a 525i accelerates from 0-60 in 7. 3 seconds with the manual, 8. 0 seconds with the automatic. At the same time, the 530i returns an epa-estimated 21/30 mpg city/highway, though that drops to just 18/26 mpg with an automatic transmission. All these bmw engines require premium unleaded fuel.  both the 2. 5-liter and 3-liter engines were updated for 2001: a fully electronic throttle system replaced the electromechanical type. As a result, throttle response is even more precise than before. Also, a new intake manifold and increased valve lift improve performance.  we've tested the 540i in the past and found the 32-valve v8 to be quiet and unobtrusive, making itself heard only when pushed hard. When pushed hard, it's powerful, covering 0-60 mph in less than six seconds with the manual, slightly more than six seconds with the automatic.  the 5 series bmws offer superb handling, regardless of suspension package and powerplant. They are true sports sedans, tracking precisely through corners with minimal body roll.  for the ultimate in razor-sharp road behavior, the sport suspension package is the choice. Stiffer springs and shock absorbers result in a slightly harsher ride quality, but enthusiasts may find this tradeoff in comfort is more than made up for by driving pleasure. Rippled pavement in downtown washington was quite noticeable through the seat of the pants. Power Seats✔ Heated Seats✔ Bucket Seats✔ CD Player✔ Air Conditioning✔ Sport Package

1995 bmw 3-series review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The modern, spacious interior, generous trunk space, and elegant, compact exterior turned a cramped, conservative but great-handling car into a roomy, stylish, relatively affordable and great-handling car. Sales have since boomed, and the car remains a perennial on everyone's 10-best lists.  for 1995, the 3-series cars remain mechanically unchanged after a flurry of additions last year. With a wealth of standard features and little optional goodies such as heated front seats, the price registered at $31,520. walkaroundthe bmw 3-series cars are taut little wedges with the snappy muscularity one expects from a german sports car. Only one and a half inches longer than a honda civic, they have a compact, purposeful presence that echoes their power and engineering substance.  without calling it as such, bmw employs the 'cab-forward' concept that chrysler made famous, in which the wheels are pushed out to the ends of the car, creating more interior volume and a longer wheelbase for a better ride and more stable handling. It's a design technique that also produces attractive proportions, keeping more of the car's mass between the axles. Compared with the audi cabrio, for example, the bmw is one and a half inches shorter but has a wheelbase that's 6 inches longer.  the 3-series lineup consists of sedan, coupe and convertible versions in each power level: the 4-cylinder 318i and the 6-cylinder 325i.  all have bmw's high level of safety features. A differentiated deployment system is now standard for the dual airbags and automotive front seat-belt tensioners. In less severe impacts, only the seat-belt tensioners activate. In more severe impacts, the airbags deploy as well. A recommended optional safety feature for the convertibles is the automatic rollover protection system. When the system senses that the car is about to flip over, roll bars pop up from behind the rear seats, supplementing the protection from the reinforced windshield frame.  another convertible point: one of the factors that allows the 318i a base price of $31,520 rather than the 325i's $40,070 is that it has a manual top. It's a one-person job requiring only a few minutes' work, but it must be done from outside the car, thus eliminating the spontaneous top-down driving offered by the 325i's power top. Both models have a slick, automatic self-sealing system to improve quietness. The gauges are bmw's traditional round analog dials, with speedometer and tachometer front and center. Standard cruise control has been extended to the 318i.  for some drivers, the no-nonsense interior is appropriate - stripped down and ready for action. For others, the interior looks shockingly spartan for a $30,000-plus car. Compared with the best american and japanese interiors, the materials may seem less than luxurious and the padding thin. The cupholders are a crude dealer-installed option - bmw's grudging response to what it perceives as a sloppy american habit of slurping beverages while driving.  on the other hand, the interior is remarkably roomy for a car of its size. The coupe and the convertible lose some rear legroom compared with the sedan (6 in. In the case of the convertible), but they are still acceptable for adults and far more useful than the compact rear compartments in many sporty coupes and convertibles.  highly supportive seats reinforce the 3-series' aggressive character. The deep side bolsters are clearly designed to keep both the driver and front passenger in place when the car is hustling around corners.  a premium 10-speaker, 200-watt audio system and leather interior - standard on the 325i - are now available as options on the 318i, as are sport suspension packages.  security has been a big issue at bmw because the cars have a particular appeal in the hot-car market. All the radios have standard theft-deterrent systems, and the engines have a disabling feature designed to foil hot-wire artists. New for '95 is a freewheeling lock cylinder that defeats entry by anything other than the correct key. driving impressionthe point of owning a bmw - the reason people pay the tariff and put up with the theft risk - is that they're marvelous driving machines. In a car the size of the 3-series, this translates into a sporty, responsive, nimble package. The long wheelbase and stiff, well-engineered chassis help deliver a surprisingly comfortable and quiet ride, considering the car's athletic character.  the refined strut-type front suspension, multi-link rear suspension and balanced weight distribution provide exhilarating handling. But this is not a lightweight car, and the greater power of the 325i's 2. 5-liter 6-cylinder engine would have been more satisfying.  although rear-drive devotees swear by the responsiveness of their cars, they must acknowledge that there are limitations on slippery surfaces compared with front-drive cars. The 318i doesn't offer a traction-control system, but it does have an optional limited slip differential to improve traction during acceleration on slick surfaces.  the standard transmission is a 5-speed manual. Given the versatility of the manual transmission, it's hard to imagine why anyone would want an automatic, but a well-geared 4-speed is available. The prices are steep and the theft rate is atrocious, but the cars deliver an unparalleled driving experience that is sprightly, sporty and responsive.  there are sport sedans and coupes that offer smoother ride quality, but they also isolate the driver more from the pleasure of sporty performance. 2006 bmw 3 series review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The benchmark redefined. introductionis there a driver anywhere who doesn't recognize the bmw 3 series? The 2006 3 series may require a double-take, at least until we get used to it, because bmw has launched the first all-new 3 series models in six years.  the 2006 bmw 325i and 330i sedans comprise the fifth-generation of a car that created a concept, or at least cemented that concept indelibly in the buying public's awareness. For 40 years the 3 series had delivered a special mix of sporting performance, practicality and european luxury in a compact package. It's the car that defines 'sport sedan,' and the benchmark every luxury car maker from acura to volvo aims at when it develops a sport sedan or a smaller luxury sedan. Above all, the 3 series is a driver's car: accelerating, turning and stopping with remarkable agility and balance, without seriously compromising comfort or common sense. Finally, the 3 series has embodied consistent product character and values, defining what has become one of the most respected brands among automobile enthusiasts. Given mixed reviews following the launch of bmw's current 5 and 7 series sedans, anticipation for the 2006 3 series might be exceeded only by the potential for disappointment.  as consumers we certainly are not disappointed, but as enthusiast drivers we're pensive about the 2006 325i and 330i sedans. At their core these remain true sport sedans, but their sporting heart is a bit more difficult to find.  if we characterized the new 330i with one word, it might be 'stuff,' even if bmw would prefer 'technology.' technology is everywhere in this compact sedan, some of it first-in-class and some not previously applied in any bmw. The 3 series accounts for 40 percent of bmw's sales worldwide and bmw is a high-tech brand. The car buying public expects technology in its products. The tires-up overhaul for 2006, including new exterior styling and interiors, more powerful engines, all six-speed transmissions and redesigned suspension, applies only to the 3 series sedans. Coupes and convertibles are still available, but for now they are built on the previous-generation 3 series platform, and are more closely related to the 2005 models.  make no mistake. The 2006 bmw 325i and 330i sedans accelerate more quickly, stop shorter and turn with more lateral grip than the 2005 models. They are roomier, with more standard and optional equipment and more sophisticated electronic controls. For entry-luxury market shoppers who put a premium on driving satisfaction, the bmw 3 series remains the place to start. For the 2006 model year, the line should include at least 10 different models, and the opportunity for confusion may be even greater than usual. The six 2006 coupes and convertibles are still the e46 3 series that's been in production since 1999. True to bmw tradition, the 325i and 330i sedans are both powered by a 3. 0-liter straight six-cylinder engine. Yet their engines are new, and different from those in the coupes and convertibles.  in the 325i sedan 30,995), the new engine generates 225 horsepower, for an increase of 40 over the 2005 model. The 2006 bmw 325i comes well equipped, with automatic climate and headlight control, a climate-controlled center console, headlight washers, rain-sensing wipers, a power moonroof, 12-speaker am/fm/cd and the trick new self-braking dynamic cruise control. Burr walnut trim is standard, though the standard upholstery is bmw's leatherette vinyl. Lighter poplar trim and aluminum are available as no-charge options.  the 330i sedan 36,995) has a more powerful version of the 3. 0-liter six, producing 255 horsepower, or an increase of 30 from 2005. The 330i comes with more standard equipment than the 325i, including eight-way power seats with memory, an auto tilt-down feature for the right side mirror when reverse is engaged, xenon adaptive headlights that turn into a curve with the car, and 13-speaker logic 7 stereo with two subwoofers and surround-style digital sound processing. Vinyl upholstery is standard.  safety features that come standard include dual stage front-impact airbags that deploy at different rates depending on the severity of impact, front side-impact airbags and full-cabin head protection airbags. The abs preloads the brake pedal when the driver suddenly lifts off the gas pedal, and includes a feature that lightly sweeps the brake discs dry every 1. 5 seconds when its raining.  the most popular option will no doubt be the new six-speed automatic transmission 1,275). There are also three major option groupings. The premium package adds dakota leather upholstery to the 325i 2,900) and 330i 2,200) along with other conveniences, including a bluetooth cellular phone interface, the tilt-down right side mirror on the 325i, power folding side mirrors, a digital compass in the rear-view mirror and hardware for bmw assist, the telemetric package that provides safety, convenience and concierge services.  the sport package 1,600) includes sporting suspension calibrations tuned by bmw's m performance division, 10-way sports seats (power adjustable in the 330i) and a wheel/tire upgrade: 17-inch alloys with v-rated performance tires for the 325i; 18-inch with w-rated tires for the 330i. The sport package and bmw's smg electro hydraulic manual transmission will be available for the 330i 1,500) in the fall. The cold weather package 1,000) adds electrically heated seats, high-intensity headlight washers and a split-folding rear seat with ski sack.  bmw's active steering system 1,250) and radar-managed active cruise control 2,200) are available as stand-alone options for the first time on the 3 series. Sirius satellite radio hardware 75) and power rear-window and manual side rear-window sunshades 575) are available as stand-alones, as are most of the individual components of the three packages, including the split-folding rear seat 475) and. walkaroundthe previous-generation 3 series sedans, and the current coupes, have a familiar, distinctive, handsome appearance. The 2006 325i and 330i sedans are certainly recognizable as bmws in an evolutionary way, but they are also substantially different from their predecessors.  for starters, the new sedans are larger. They're more than two inches longer and three inches wider, and wheelbase has increased 1. 4 inches. Most of the increased exterior dimensions translate into more interior space, particularly in the back seat. Moreover, bmw claims the new body is stronger, in that it is more resistant to twisting or bending from road shocks. A rigid structure is crucial to its success and performance in virtually every other respect.  some reviewers have claimed that the new 3 series has been spared some of the styling excesses in the bmw 5 and 7 series cars. Certainly the approach with the 3 series has been more conservative, and it's easy to understand why. This car accounts for nearly half of bmw 's income. Nonetheless, spared is not a word we'd use for the 2006 3 series sedans.  the predominant theme in front is bmw's traditional double beam headlights, now under clear covers that wrap around the corners and taper to a point to emphasize the car's width. In profile, the sedan's front and rear overhangs seem even shorter than before. The hood line continues past the windshield pillars all the way to the rear, while the roof line is rounder than before.  design is the most subjective of all automotive traits, and clearly the 325i and 330i retain some basic bmw qualities or character. Yet in certain respects they also look more generic than their predecessors. The sides are basically flat planes with a single crease below the door pulls and above the wheel wells, but the ends of the car are busier, and we've yet to discover cohesion to the design. Particularly in rear view there are lots of lines, and in this aspect the 3 looks as if it might have been designed in asia rather than munich. In short, we're not sure we like it, or at least we're still getting used it.  one thing is certain. Larger wheels and tires filling the wheel wells are almost always a good thing for appearance's sake, and we like the new wheel upgrades (to 17-inch on the 325i and 18-inch on the 330i). The 330i can be distinguished from the 325i by more than its wheels. The 330i's windows and grille slats are trimmed with chrome, while slats across its lower front air intakes are body colored rather than black.  anoth. 2001 bmw x5 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Bmw answers the trend with road-going performance. introductionoriginally called a 'sports activity vehicle,' the bmw x5 delivers superb handling and performance. It may be the best-handling suv on the road. It almost feels like an oversized rally car. Muddy trails are easily negotiable, though this isn't what we'd call a highly capable off-road vehicle. And cargo capacity isn't a strong point. lineuptwo models are available: 3. 0i 38,900) and 4. 4i 49,400).  bmw launched the x5 for 2000 as one upscale model powered by a 4. 4-liter v8 engine mated to a 5-speed automatic steptronic transmission.  for 2001, the 3. 0i was added with a 2. 8-liter six-cylinder engine. A 5-speed manual gearbox (zf type c) comes standard; bmw's 5-speed steptronic is optional. walkaroundthe x5 is immediately recognizable as a bmw. In fact it looks like a 540i wagon on steroids - and it is remarkably close in overall size. From the kidney-shaped grille to the tailgates, the curvy x5 is all bmw. The slope of the tailgate looks almost identical to that of the 5 series wagon. The major difference is that the x5 is 10 inches taller than the 5 series wagon. This increased ride height is the key element of making this vehicle more like a sport-utility.  bmw's x5 is called a light-duty truck by the government. Most truck-based suvs, including the mercedes-benz m-class, are built with the body bolted onto a frame. The x5, however, uses a monocoque body shell like that of a regular sedan. This unit-body construction provides a much stiffer body shell, which improves handling, reduces noise and allows better fit and finish. The x5 is not the first monocoque suv; the lexus rx 300 and the jeep grand cherokee follow the same design concept. Because of the unit-body construction they share, the lexus rx 300 is the x5's closest competitor in terms of ride comfort and handling.  the x5 rides on big-diameter 18-inch wheels with low-profile tires that lend an aggressive appearance, and even more aggressive 19-inch wheels are an option. interiorthe x5 is all bmw inside. The door handles have a nice brushed aluminum finish and the soft plastic surfaces somehow feel more like leather. X5 comes with a long list of standard features. The one we drove had an integrated navigation system that was a little confusing to master in the short time we had the vehicle. The seats are excellent and the ergonomics are good. Despite the x5's greater height, inside headroom is all but identical to that of the 5 series wagon, which is itself slightly better than that of the larger 7 series.  surprisingly, the cargo carrying capacity is no better than that of the 540i sport wagon. That's not to say it's bad but don't expect the x5 to be a substitute for a minivan or suburban in the haulage business. A very sturdy rollaway cover that can be removed for a larger load carrying capacity covers the rear cargo area. The rear seats are split 40/60 and can be folded down to provide a flat surface. The height of the load floor looks high and it seems to take a bit more heft to load cargo; a 150-pound english mastiff accustomed to climbing into dozens of different suvs found the pitch too steep to climb up his ramp into the bmw.  the rear hatch is split with a flip-up window and a tailgate similar in design to the range rover's. This can make the x5 a bit inconvenient at the airport. Reflectors on the top of the tailgate's door jam enhance safety when accessing gear at night.  passive safety has been a major part of the development of the x5. It can be purchased with no less than eight airbags to protect occupants in a major crash. Each front seat occupant gets a front airbag, a side thorax airbag and a side head bag. An optional side thorax airbag is available for the two rear-seat occupants. The airbag system is essentially the same as in the 7 series; bmw claims its own crash tests indicate the x5 will obtain a five-star rating in the government's (nhtsa) crash tests. Bmw claims the x5 is safer than a 7 series and that it will set new safety standards for this class of vehicle. In november 2000, the insurance institute for highway safety rated the x5 as its 'best pick' among suvs for crashworthiness. driving impressionthe x5 4. 4i might be considered the bmw m5 of suvs. It will do everything the specially built amg mercedes ml55 will do, except win a drag race or be a mercedes. If the amg benz is for horsepower extremists, the x5 is still a power hitter-the sammy sosa to mark mcguire of suvs, maybe.  mostly, the x5's handling is noticeably more stable and comfortable, with less twitching and head toss, making it more widely suitable.  the x5 wants to be driven like a sports car. The five-speed steptronic transmission can be easily used like a stick, downshifting with a snick or two of the lever for turns, sometimes instead of braking. It's engaged by notching the lever to the left, which puts the transmission into sport mode, and the upshifts/downshifts are accomplished by a simple quick nudge of the lever forward or backward.  not all manual-automatic transmissions lend themselves to practical or convenient use, as the lever action may be awkward or the engine's powerband doesn't care, but the x5 is made for it, and the execution is perfect. It's wonderful to use during passing on two-lanes, making that move safer and smoother. The oomphy power is seamless, with redline coming at 5800 rpm.  on the freeway, the x5 changes lanes with the lightest of touch and with total precision. The tale of the tape might reveal some of its rock-steadiness. Compared to the mercedes ml430, the x5's track is one inch wider and it rides 2. 2 inches lower.  it's the slow speeds where the x5 requires effort. The engine hardly lacks torque, yet it feels like it's working when the going is deliberately slow. This seat-of-the-pants feeling might well be skewed by the transmission mapping or ratios. More bothersome is the power steering, as it takes too much effort to turn the steering wheel at slow speeds.  the brakes are appropriate to the price and function of the car. They're huge, they incorporate every electronic trick known to man, they're effortless to the touch, and they enable the x5 to stop as quickly and securely as the bmw 7 series luxury cars.  there's no doubt bmw has achieved a hitherto unobtainable goal with the x5: it has managed to produce the smoothest riding and best handling suv on the market, surpassing that of the mercedes-benz m-class. Bmw says its test drivers have driven the x5 around racetracks at speeds close to that of the 328i sedan. This is probably true for experienced drivers, who know the limits of themselves and the vehicle's capability, but for ordinary drivers the x5 is a tall vehicle; it leans more going through corners than a sedan.  x5's straight line and freeway manners are great. It feels stable; the steering is even better than in the 5 series and the ride is smooth. The v8 engine provides plenty of power, making it faster in the race away from traffic lights than most cars. This is a wonderful system for those who want an automatic with manual control. ( drove the 4. 4i.)  the ride quality of the 3. 0i felt firm and bouncy. Running errands around town wasn't much fun with wife and dog. Suspension undulations and head toss seemed excessive. Clutch engagement is quick and the torque characteristics of the engine, a bit abrupt at throttle tip-in, make smooth, brisk takeoffs a challenge. And it wasn't easy to have good smooth drivin. summarywe have mixed feelings about the bmw x5. It's cargo capacity is no better than a bmw 5 series wagon. The height of the cargo area is much higher than the 5 series wagon and getting in and out is more difficult, so it's less practical than the 5 series wagon. Ride, handling and overall performance are not as good as the 5 series wagon. Front Airbag✔ Navigation System

2006 bmw 3-series review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The 330i's windows and grille slats are trimmed with chrome, while slats across its lower front air intakes are body colored rather than black.  anoth. 2002 bmw 5 series review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale.

1995 bmw 3 series review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale.
