2010 honda civic review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The benchmark for compacts. introductionthe honda civic continues to hold its position at the top of the compact class, thanks to innovative styling, refinement, reliability, and a broad model line that ranges from the eco-friendly civic hybrid to the racy civic si.  inside, all civic models are pleasant, attractive and inviting. Available technology features include bluetooth handsfreelink on navigation-equipped models, and a usb audio interface on civic ex, ex-l, hybrid, and si. We've found the civic to be comfortable in which to ride, nice to drive, and with ample windows that provide outstanding outward visibility.  the civic comes standard with side-impact airbags and other safety features that are optional on some competitive models. The hybrid model features dramatically reduced emissions, and it delivers an epa-rated 40/45 mpg city/highway.  the civic gx sedan uses natural gas for fuel. Natural gas is available to residents of california and new york and is used by fleets elsewhere.  for 2010 the honda civic line is essentially unchanged from 2009 when the styling was freshened. The civic was last redesigned for the 2006 model year. lineupthe honda civic comes in coupe and sedan versions. A five-speed automatic 800) is optional.  the civic dx coupe 15,455) and sedan 15,655) are the base models. Standard equipment includes power windows, tilt-and-telescope steering wheel, height-adjustable driver's seat and fold-down rear seatback. The coupe gets a rear decklid spoiler. Brakes are disc in front, drum in rear. The p195/65r15 tires are on steel wheels with full wheelcovers. The civic lx-s sedan 18,205) upgrades to alloy wheels, exclusive sport-trimmed black cloth seats with synthetic suede bolsters and silver stitching, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a rear deck spoiler, and a chrome exhaust tip.  the civic ex coupe and sedan 19,455) add a power moonroof; variable-speed intermittent windshield wipers; a second 12-volt power outlet; a 60/40 split folding rear seatback; and outside temperature indicator. The steering wheel reverts to plastic, but adds audio controls; while the keyless remote adds a trunk release button. The sedan's stereo adds two speakers (for a total of six); while the coupe gets a 350-watt, seven-speaker system; both get a usb interface. The ex coupe is available with manual transmission, xm satellite radio, and voice-recognition navigation 21,455).  the civic ex-l coupe and sedan 21,005) add leather seats with seat heaters, leather-trimmed steering wheel and armrest, heated mirrors, and vehicle stability assist and brake assist. They come only with a six-speed manual transmission. Other go-fast goodies include a limited-slip differential, sport suspension, vehicle stability assist with traction control, and p215/45vr17 tires on 17-inch alloy wheels. Fog lights come standard. Inside are synthetic suede sport seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an aluminum shift knob. Both coupe and sedan get the 350-watt, seven-speaker stereo. Packages include high-performance tires for the coupe 22,255) and sedan 22,455); xm and navigation 24,055 and $24,255); or all of the above 24,255 and $24,455).  the civic hybrid sedan 23,800) features a continuously variable automatic transmission (cvt), automatic climate control, a roof-mounted radio antenna, a rear decklid spoiler, and hybrid-pertinent digital data displays. Vehicle stability assist comes standard. The hybrid is available with the navigation system and xm satellite radio 25,800) and with a leather interior 25,000) including heated front seats and side mirrors, or with the leather package, navigation, and xm 27,000).  the civic gx 25,340) is essentially an lx sedan with a 1. 8-liter engine powered by natural gas. It comes only with a five-speed automatic transmission. walkaroundthe honda civic sedans and coupes don't share any body panels. Details and markings distinguish each trim level. The honda civic sedan has a grille with a tall, trapezoidal center opening with secondary scoop-like openings on either side. A grid-like insert in the center opening contrasts with a kind of cyclone-fence theme in the side scoops. Slender headlamp assemblies angle upwards as they curve around the fenders. Around back, a bright chrome bar connects the taillights just above the indentation for the license plate.  the coupe grille has the honda logo centered in an oval-themed black mesh, with a lower trapezoidal opening, and scoops at either side that are drawn out wide and horizontal and divided midway by a horizontal strut.  save for a lower body character line, the sides of the civic are more slab than sensuous. Understated fender blisters break up the otherwise featureless expanse. Honda calls it a monoform design, and a central expression of this is the windshield, the leading edge of which reaches into the hood all the way to the middle of the front wheel wells, pushing the cab-forward design concept to a new extreme. On the coupe, the windshield is raked at a radical 21. 9 degrees; the sedan's at a barely more upright 23. 9 degrees.  the coupe's spoilered, rounded rear profile suggests sleek swiftness. The sedan's somewhat abbreviated trunk lid and high, chunky tail add perceived mass to a tightly proportioned, smallish sedan.  on the si sedan, the grille bar is black instead of chrome. On both the coupe and sedan an si badge tucks into the grille's lower left side, and oval fog lights are set into the bumper's outboard openings. An i-vtec label appears just forward of the rear wheel well; on the si sedan it's placed low on the rear door. A rear spoiler wraps over the outboard edges of the sedan's trunk lid; on the coupe, the spoiler is free-standing. Both sedan and coupe roll on their own unique alloy wheels. The hybrid is understated, with just a small hybrid badge under the right rear taillight. The dx edges more toward spartan inside, while the ex heads toward lush. Fit and finish meet honda standards. Plastic trim elements look high-grade, although the multi-piece dash invites concern about high-mileage squeaks and buzzes.  seats are comfortable, not plush. Seat bottoms provide better than average thigh support. The manual height adjustment on the driver's seat pivots on front hinges, forcing drivers to choose between seat height and legroom. The si models get sport front seats with synthetic suede upholstery and more aggressive bolsters both bottom and side for improved support.  the view out the front, with the expansive windshield, low cowl and sloping hood, is unparalleled in the class. A commensurately low beltline would enhance side vision, but otherwise there's little about which to complain. Tiny front quarter windows on the sedan, necessary to allow the front door windows to roll all the way down, push the side rear-view mirrors a bit too far rearward for quick and easy glances at neighboring lanes.  controls are for the most part where they should be, but not necessarily as they should be. There's little symmetry in organization or shape of features and interfaces. It's not an unpleasant look, but one that requires some acclimation. Despite the seeming logic of the two-tier instrument display, we still haven't adjusted to the resulting weird pod draped over the top of the dash.  the dash itself seems endlessly deep; draped across its top, in front of the driver, is a hooded opening with a digital speedometer between lcd coolant temperature and fuel level gauges. Down below, in the more common place for instruments, a large, round, analog tachometer dominates the view through the top half of the steering wheel, with warning lights to either side. Outboard of this display are large, irregular vent registers. Instrument lighting is blue on most models but red on the si models.  sedans share the coupe's three-spoke steering wheel (with spokes at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions), which matches the spacey interior theme just as well. The civic navigation.

2014 honda civic review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The honda civic has been improved once again for 2014 to help keep it fresh and maintain it's position as the best-selling compact car in america. A unique hf trim ekes out additional fuel economy with the help of aerodynamic add-ons, lightweight alloy wheels and low rolling-resistance tires. Standard safety features on all civics include electronic stability and traction control, anti-lock brakes with brake assist, six airbags, daytime running lights and tire pressure monitoring. Tech features include bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, a rearview camera with guidelines and eco-assist technology on all trims, automatic climate control for ex models and up, front fog lights for ex-l models and subscription free fm traffic updates with the optional navigation system. New premium features for 2014 include honda lanewatch blind spot camera, smart entry with push button starting and a 7-inch display audio touchscreen media center. The ex-l sedan is now standard with an 8-way power adjustable driver seat. Following the 2013 refresh of the sedan, the coupe is refreshed for 2014 with updated exterior styling and all models receive further interior refinements and technology. 2006 honda civic review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new lineup sets new standards for compacts. introductionit's hard to find a more competitive new car market than the compact class. And it's more than just price, as the number of entries has skyrocketed in recent years.  honda once led the class, in every measure that mattered, from performance to price to quality to pizzazz. And just as important image-wise, honda led the hot, sport compact niche. With the redesigned, restyled, rejuvenated 2006 honda civic models, the company has returned to the fray with renewed energy.  across the line, there's more power, improved ride and handling, and better people packaging. There are more choices as well: a sporty new civic si coupe, a fully populated tier of coupes and sedans with new engines and transmissions, and a more efficient and effective hybrid sedan. In between there's a sedan listing at $15,560 with the new five-speed automatic. The si starts at $20,290. There are other cars in the class that undercut these figures, but the civic includes important safety features, including antilock brakes and side-impact airbags as standard equipment, that many others leave on the option list. lineuphonda doesn't hold back when it comes to fleshing out a model line. A performance-oriented coupe, the si, comes with a 197-horsepower, 2. 0-liter inline-4 fitted with a six-speed manual. Standard equipment is confined to power windows, tilt-and-telescope steering wheel and height-adjustable driver's seat. Added to the no-extra-charge features on the lx are power moonroof; variable windshield wipers; a second 12-volt power outlet; a 60/40 split folding rear seatback; a seven-speaker, 350-watt, xm-ready, premium stereo with auxiliary input jack and steering wheel-mounted controls; and outside temperature indicator. There are few options available and honda positions its options packages and automatic transmissions as separate models, so for example, there is the civic coupe ex with navigation and automatic transmission 21,010) and the similarly equipped sedan version 20,760).  the si coupe 20,290) comes with all the gear found on the lx coupe plus leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, amber-tinted headlight trim rings and a body-colored rear wing spoiler. The si coupe is available with high-performance summer tires and the navigation system with xm satellite radio 22,240).  the hybrid sedan 22,150) adds to the lx's features automatic climate control, a roof-mounted radio antenna, a rear decklid spoiler, and hybrid-pertinent digital data displays. The hybrid is available with the navigation system 23,650).  dealer accessories include 16-inch alloy wheels 876), chrome exhaust tips 119), and aero-style, exterior body add-ons for the sedan. Honda factory performance packages are available for the si, one for the lx and ex coupes and sedans. The si hfp package includes lowered springs, more tautly tuned shocks, a sports muffler, 18-inch alloy wheels, a full lower-body aero kit and the hfp emblem 3880). The lx and ex hfp package for the coupe 3183) and sedan 3680) substitutes 17-inch alloy wheels, drops the muffler and adds a rear spoiler. Installation costs extra and is set by dealers. walkaroundhonda re-did everything for 2006. Not only are powertrains updated and upgraded, and a new platform developed, but the sheetmetal is new. Not a single body panel is carried over from 2005.  the sedans and coupes don't share any body panels. And trim elements and markings distinguish each iteration.  the platform underneath is new for 2006, seriously strengthened in rigidity, stiffness and crash absorption capacities, with minor adjustments to accommodate the varying dimensions of the coupe and sedan body styles. As part of its campaign to revitalize the civic's appeal to the sport compact market, honda has incorporated reinforced mounting points and gussets to allow suspension and certain other modifications without diminishing body integrity.  from the front, styling differences are subtle, but marked. A polished, horizontal bar dominates the sedan grille. Slender headlamp assemblies angle upwards as they curve around the fenders. A single, broad air intake fills the lower portion of the fascia.  the coupe grille appears more open, with the honda logo suspended on a matte-black framework. An understated badge tucked away in the far right reaches of the grille identifies the sporty si version. The coupe headlights are more sharply outlined. The lower air intake opens between two, geometric recesses that feed cooling air to the front disc brakes and house the optional fog lamps.  the front ends, but especially the coupes', push the leading corners down and outward, emphasizing the 2006's wider track (the distance side to side between the tires), which grows by more than an inch in front and by more than two inches in back over the 2005's.  save for a lower body character line, drawn slightly higher on the coupe than on the sedan, the sides of the new civic are more slab than sensuous. Understated fender blisters, more pronounced on the coupe, break up the otherwise featureless expanse. What excitement there is in the side view is in the sleekness of what honda calls a monoform design. A central expression of this is the windshield, the leading edge of which reaches into the hood all the way to the middle of the front wheel wells, pushing the design concept of 'cab forward' to a new extreme. On the coupe, the windshield is raked at a radical 21. 9 degrees, markedly steeper than the '05's 26. 7 degrees, even exceeding the acura nsx's 23. 9 degrees. And the sedan's matches the nsx's, dropping from the '05's 29. 1 degrees. The sail (the body panel aft of the rear side window) is unique to each model as well. The coupe's forms an acute angle emphasizing the two-door body style, while the sedan's curves down over the rear door's trailing edge, pulling the eye through the higher roofline. The coupe's be-spoilered, rounded rear profile suggests swiftness. The sedan's somewhat abbreviated trunk lid and chopped off tail end adds perceived mass to the tightly proportioned, smallish sedan.  likewise, the rear view of each body style differs markedly. The coupe's sloping trunk lid settles into a deep cut in the rear bumper, with the license plate sheltered in an equally deep recess. The sedan's trunk lid drops in an almost vertical, unrelieved sheer from a relatively high crest across the top, all very bmw-like in presence. interiorif the 2006 civic's exterior is new, the '06's interior borders on shocking. First impression of the instrument arrangement is of a video game. Controls are for the most part where they should be, but not necessarily as they should be. There's little symmetry in organization or shape of features and interfaces. It's not an unpleasant look, but one that requires some acclimation. Ironically, perhaps, the interiors are indistinguishable across the full line, with only minor differences necessitated by the different powertrains.  splayed across the top of the seemingly unending dash in front of the driver is a hooded opening with a digital speedometer between lcd coolant temperature and fuel level gauges. Down below, in the more common place for the instrument panel, in the half circle formed by the top half of the steering wheel, that is, there's a large, round, analog tachometer. To each side of this lower ip are large, irregular vent registers. Centered in the dash above the climate control panel is either an lcd window combining the navigation display and audio settings and, in the hybrid, a selection of graphic depictions of the hybrid system's functions and status or a stereo control head with the pertinent accoutrements. To the right of this squished pod-like arrangement, the dash curves away from the front seat passenger and houses two, more horizontally oriented vent registers, again neither of which matches the other. A wide, but not especially deep glove box rests below a cabin-wide, clam shell-like notch dividing the upper and lower halves of the dash.  there is no center stack to speak of tying together the dash and the drive tunnel.

2005 honda cr-v review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Space, convenience, agility. introductionthe honda cr-v is roomy, convenient and easy to drive. It rides smoothly, without the jouncy harshness of many suvs. The cr-v is surprisingly maneuverable in tight quarters and handles well on winding roads. It's also stable in stiff crosswinds at freeway speeds.  like toyota's rav4, the cr-v was one of the first so-called cute-utes: not quite a sport-utility, but more than a car, offering an upright seating position, all-wheel drive and decent cargo space. Since it was built on a car platform (the honda civic), cr-v's highway-friendly ride and handling made it drive more like a car. It beats most of its immediate competitors in both qualitative and quantitative measures, and trails the competition in only a few. It's available with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive for winter weather capability.  changes for 2005 include minor exterior restyling, added standard safety features, and the addition of a new luxury trim level. A cam-driven all-wheel-drive mechanism now replaces the pump system on all 4wd-equipped models, improving acceleration and hill-climbing performance. lineupthe cr-v is offered in three trim levels. All are available with a five-speed automatic transmission; a five-speed manual is available on the mid-level model. Honda has long believed that the fewer the options, the less a car costs to build, so options on its small suv are few.  standard features on all 2005 models include 16-inch wheels, integrated keyless entry, and safety features including front and side-impact air bags, anti-lock braking (abs) and vehicle stability assist with traction control (electronic stability control).  the lx 19,995) is available with front-wheel drive, but it comes well equipped. For 2005, 16-inch aluminum wheels, outside temperature gauge, and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls have been added. On the interior, the se adds heated leather seats, and leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob. Exterior additions include door mirrors, body-colored bumpers, side molding, door handles and spare wheel cover. walkaroundfor 2005, the front grille and front bumper have been redesigned to improve aerodynamics, and cylindrical headlights added to complement the stronger appearance.  this second-generation cr-v features smoother styling than the original (pre-2002) cr-v. And the shorter, blunter front-end creates a more rugged look. The cr-v still sports its trademark high-mount tail lights on either side of the rear window.  the rear glass opens on its own, separately from the tailgate, which is good. Unfortunately, the lower part of the gate is side-hinged and opens to the right. Getting in and out is quick and easy and doesn't require climbing or stooping.  the front seats are excellent. In most measures of interior room, the cr-v beats its competition. Only the toyota rav4 tops the cr-v's front-seat headroom, and by less than half an inch. The moonroof, standard on the ex and se is nice, but reduces headroom by nearly 2 inches. Taller drivers or those who like to sit upright will notice.  more surprising than the front-passenger accommodations is the space and comfort provided by the cr-v's rear seats. The rear bench is neither too soft nor too hard, and allows passengers to travel without getting numb-reared or fidgety. All three rear positions have three-point belts and head restraints, something not all suvs offer.  gauges are easy to read, with white numerals on a black background, eliminating the twilight wash-out afflicting the black-on-white arrays that are the current fad. Cruise control is standard, as is an adjustable steering column. We love the stereo and six-disc in-dash cd changer, standard on the ex and se. On the other hand, honda does not provide a compass in the cr-v. The parking brake is disguised, subtly integrated into the vertical panel forward of the center console. As odd as the placement might seem at first, using the hand brake gets more comfortable in short order.  it's the small, thoughtful touches that make the cr-v a pleasant place to go about the business of driving. There's a convenient, collapsible tray table betwixt the front seats, with a couple of cup holders and a recess for a cell phone. The cover for the spare-tire bin does double duty as a folding picnic table. Almost everything else seems to be where it should be, and there are no less than 21 storage nooks adroitly spread through the cabin. Coat hooks are provided above the rear seats and the center console accommodates cds and cassettes. For 2005, honda added retractable grab rails and larger seat pockets.  in terms of cargo hauling, the cr-v is the champion among the small suvs, with 72. 0 cubic feet of cargo space. The cr-v provides 33. 5 cubic feet with the rear seat in place. So don't be afraid to rev it. Honda is a leader in engine technology, and the cr-v's 2. 4-liter, 16-valve, dohc engine benefits from 'intelligent' variable valve timing, which honda calls i-vtec. This system allows the engine to generate lots of usable power while keeping fuel economy at an impressive epa-estimated 22/27 mpg city/highway. Like all hondas, the cr-vs is a clean-running vehicle. Downshifts come quickly, and full-throttle upshifts come smoothly just before the redline. It's a great aid when winter snowstorms hit, adding confidence and sure-footed tracking in slippery conditions. Vehicle stability assist, new for 2005 and standard on all models, uses sensors at each wheel and the anti-lock brake system to modulate the electronic throttle and apply brake force to individual wheels as needed to maintain traction and avoid skids on slippery pavement and in tight turns.  called real time awd, honda's system enhances stability and maximizes traction in the snow and on dirt or gravel roads. This is not a true off-road system with a dual-range transfer case or locking differentials or anything of the sort. With its standard smooth-tread tires, the cr-v is not suited for backcountry off-road travel. But it is suited for snow.  whether the roads are smooth or rough, the cr-v rides well. It rides more smoothly than most suvs, which makes for pleasant motoring around town over busy, beat-up streets. Handling is reassuring. It feels sure-footed on twisting roads. Even when it's driven harder than most owners are likely to go, the cr-v doesn't push excessively at its front end or slide at the rear, and the tires provide good grip on pavement. In short, this cute-ute. AM/FM✔ Power Windows✔ Anti-lock Brakes✔ Power Mirrors✔ Cruise Control✔ CD Changer✔ Leather Seats✔ Sunroof/Moonroof✔ Air Conditioning✔ Aluminum Wheels

2005 honda civic review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Big satisfaction in a small package. introductionefficient, practical, affordable, polished and pleasant to drive, if not downright fun, with a reputation for reliability: these are the honda civic's hallmarks, and nothing about the 2005 model suggests anything has changed.  measured by the hardware, little has changed on the civic for 2005. There are a couple of new paint colors and a special edition package at the high end of the line-up. On the other hand, price increases are so modest that they haven't kept pace with inflation, and the civic had significant changes inside and out for 2004.  few carmakers offer the range or diversity honda builds into the civic line. There are sedans, coupes and a hatchback, with an emphasis on either features and convenience, performance or fuel efficiency and low cost of operation. All are notable for their excellent fuel economy, free-revving engines and solid handling, including the electrically assisted hybrid. Up-level civics come with powerful vtec engines that deliver brisk acceleration. All provide superb comfort for front-seat passengers.  three specialized civics are designed specifically to minimize environmental impact and deliver better fuel economy than all but a few cars currently available. The most extreme is the hybrid sedan, which gets up to 51 mpg with help from an electric motor that never needs to be plugged in. Owning and driving a civic hybrid is just like life with a regular civic, almost. The civic hx coupe gets 44 mpg on regular unleaded. There's also a civic gx sedan that burns natural gas; honda claims it has the cleanest internal combustion engine in the world.  subtle styling changes were made for 2004 when bumpers, hoods, headlights and grilles on the coupe and sedan were redesigned to emphasize a baby-brother resemblance to the slick, smooth honda accord. The sporty si hatchback was trimmed with new head- and tail lamps. The sedans and coupes offer several engines choices and trim levels. All come standard with a five-speed manual transmission. Honda's package-pricing policy means extra equipment is geared to the trim level, with few individual options. A new special edition trim package is offered for 2005. Prices have increased a modest $150 from 2004 for all models except the si, which rises $220.  the dx sedan 13,160) and dx coupe 13,810) are the least expensive civics. The dx sedan has wind-up windows and manual locks, and it lacks such features as air conditioning and seat-height adjustment. An optional vp or value package 400) adds air conditioning, a cd player and a center console. The vp is included in the price of the standard dx coupe.  in other civic trim levels, the coupes are less expensive. The lx sedan 15,510) and lx coupe 15,310) get the 115-hp engine with more standard equipment, including air conditioning, 15-inch (rather than 14-inch) steel wheels, anti-roll bars front and rear, power-windows, a height-adjustable driver's seat, remote keyless entry and a cd player.  the civic ex sedan 17,410) and coupe 17,010) get more power from a more sophisticated 127-horsepower vtec (for variable valve timing) version of the 1. 7-liter engine. Ex also adds 15-inch aluminum wheels, body-colored power mirrors, upgraded audio with six speakers and a tilt-and-slide glass sunroof. The se is actually an option package 450) on the ex. It includes an in-dash 6-disc cd changer with an auxiliary jack for ipod-style mp3 players and satellite radio receivers. The se also adds a leather-wrapped steering wheel, rear-deck spoiler, unique alloy wheels and special badges.  the civic si 19,220) is only available as a hatchback and the hatchback is only available as the si. The si comes with a high-output 2. 0-liter vtec engine delivering 160 horsepower, sport tires and suspension and ex-grade features. It's not offered with an automatic.  three specialty civics put a particular premium on fuel efficiency. The hx 13,860) comes with dx-style amenities and a lean-burn engine that combines up to 44 mpg highway with an impressive 117 horsepower. The hybrid is equipped comparably to the ex sedan, with a five-speed manual transmission or optional cvt. The hybrid system provides up to 93 horsepower and 116 lb-ft of torque with the electric motor 'assist.' fuel economy is improved up to 30 percent compared to other civic sedans, while meeting the epa's partial zero emissions standard.  finally, the civic gx sedan 20,190) comes with 100-hp, natural gas-powered engine that requires a special fueling station for home use. The gx may have the cleanest internal combustion engine in the world, as honda claims, but it's also the most expensive and one of the least powerful civics. For 2005, the gx gets the same styling changes introduced on other civic sedans in 2004.  safety equipment includes two-stage front airbags, child seat anchors for the back seat and an emergency release lever inside the trunk, all standard. Side-impact air bags come standard on the hybrid and are optional on all models 250) and we strongly recommend getting them. Anti-lock brakes (abs) are standard on the ex, si, and hybrid, and optional on gx. We wish abs was available on all models. The civic scores well in the national highway traffic safety administration's crash. walkaroundhonda's reputation for space-efficient design holds in the civic. This small car packs its motor into a condensed engine bay, leaving more space for passengers, especially in front, without increasing exterior dimensions. We like the civic's expansive glass, compared to some small cars. We're not crazy about the lever-type door handles, though, the grab-through style is easier to use.  now familiar, the civic's basic wedge profile rises from front to rear, with a low, abbreviated prow and high, curt tail. The hood sits amazingly low. Civic's flanks are interrupted only by a single crease that dashes from the front wheel opening to the taillight; there are no body-side moldings. Windshield pillars arch into the rolled roof to meet narrow c-pillars. Bold tail lamps dominate the blunt rear panel. Overall, both the sedan and the coupe remain conservative in appearance, but contemporary in design.  for 2005, the new special edition features a prominent rear-deck spoiler, unique alloy wheels and badges that quickly distinguish it from other civics. These features follow more significant styling changes introduced last year, when most models where fitted with redesigned bumpers, grilles, hoods and lights at both ends. The changes are subtle, but suggest the total re-style given big brother accord in 2003. The family resemblance is obvious.  the same shared blood is even more obvious between the civic sedan and coupe, yet the two cars are clearly different. While they share the same wheel base and inner structure, most of their exterior panels are not interchangeable. The coupe features a more aggressive windshield rake, intended to create a sportier look, and its tail lamps light up in a signature pattern. Its huge, flat windshield is steeply raked, and its nose slopes radically downward, generating excellent aerodynamics and allowing great visibility outward. The si is slab-sided, without any sculpture in the sheet metal, though in 2004 better proportioned 16-inch wheels gave the car more character by better filling the wheel wells. Some think the si is ugly; others love it and are quick to defend it. interiorgood seats, well-designed controls and excellent outward visibility make the honda civic an easy car to operate. The windows are expansive for a car this size and the hood is low, so the passenger compartment feels airy and open. Sight lines are excellent for driving and parking. From the front seat all civics are comfortable cars; from the back seat, they are less so.  front-seat accommodations in the civic are superb for a car in this class. The sedan's seats provide excellent support, thanks to a rigid structure with fairly aggressive side bolsters. High bottom cushions make entry and exit easy, though a lack of height adjustment in the base dx limits tailoring for driver size or taste. The civic coupe's front seatbacks stretch broad and deep, with headrests that are open at the center like a doughnut. The si hatchback's front seats are best of all, offering comfort for longer trips and more aggressive bolstering for hard driving.  seat fabrics have been upgraded in recent years, and the look and feel of materials are generally very good. The civic hybrid's interior is most posh of all, with automatic climate control and a two-tone finish lacking in the high-trim ex sedan. 1997 honda civic review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Still the small car gold standard. introductionmuch of the credit for elevating the status of inexpensive subcompacts can be given to honda. Before the civic came along more than two decades ago, low-buck offerings tended to be little more than alternatives to used cars, desperation purchases made by the financially challenged.  that's certainly not the case now. Clever engineering, good assembly quality and a comprehensive menu of features both standard and optional have made cars in this class, the civic among them, more than palatable. They can--and do--offer driving pleasure and surprising comfort on top of relatively low price tags.  the key word in the last sentence is 'relatively.' with stickers edging toward the $20,000 mark for fully loaded civics, alternatives go beyond the likes of toyota tercels, mitsubishi mirages, nissan sentras, dodge/plymouth neons and others of similar size, price and packaging. S. walkaroundhonda's small car presents a familiar face to the world, one that's retained its family character through several redesigns, inluding the wholesale 1996 overhaul.  three body styles are offered in a variety of trim levels: the 3-door cx hatchback is the least expensive (from $10,945), followed by the dx coupe (from $12,675) and dx sedan (from $13,030).  from the windshield forward, the trio shares sheet metal; a sloping nose and low cowl give the driver excellent visibility, and the front end is made more distinctive by the new headlight treatment that went with the 1996 redesign. All three civics have large doors, and offer good access to well-shaped stowage space in back. Amenities on the order of dual outside mirrors, an am/fm radio, and tilt steering are supplied. All sedans and automatic transmission coupes and hatchbacks also get power steering. The hatchback cx is somewhat plainer, doing without the radio. A mid-grade lx sedan adds air conditioning, cruise control, power windows and power locks, while ex sedans and coupes come with just about everything one might reasonably want in a civic and the option of the family's most powerful engine (127 hp), a power moonroof and abs.  but the most intriguing version for innovation-seekers is the hx coupe, which is available with a continuously variable belt-drive transmission (cvt). It is well-designed, roomy and comfortable, with materials selected more for durability. A base civic has but three instruments--speedometer, fuel gauge and coolant temperature. Uplevel models add a tachometer. Switches are easy to reach (these are compact cars!) and carry clear markings. In this regard, as in so many others, the civic will not disappoint.  getting small powerplants to do the work of larger ones is a honda trademark. Any one of the three civic engine choices combines sprightly performance and exceptional smoothness with outstanding economy. All civic engines use a 4-valve design for maximum efficiency; the ex and hx coupe units add a variable valve timing system (called vtec by honda) that makes them extraordinarily responsive at any speed.  combined with the standard 5-speed manual transmission--one of the easiest-shifting gearboxes around--the civic engines cater to people who like to drive. When mated to the optional 4-speed automatic, which uses electronic controls to minimize unnecessary shifting on hills, they deliver effortless operation.  good as they are, though, neither of the conventional transmissions is as impressive as the hx coupe's cvt. Controlled by what looks like an automatic's shift lever--complete with three forward ranges, though only drive is really necessary for most use--the belt-drive transmission is a fascinating device. Pull away from a stop and the engine rpm rises faster than the car accelerates. It is uncannily smooth, and more responsive than a normal automatic. It's also more fuel efficient.  the cvt does take a little acclimation before comfort sets in. One tester initially likened it to driving a manual-transmission car with a slipping clutch. This is most noticeable during hard acceleration: the engine spins right up to its maximum speed and stays there until the driver lifts off or the desired vehicle speed is reached.  throttle lift-off will likely occur first, as the cvt civic has a maximum speed well in excess of 100 mph. Used more prudently, the cvt is efficient enough to return real-world fuel economy in the high-30 mpg range.  there's nothing lacking in the remainder of the civic's mechanical hardware, either. In its latest form, the civic continues the tradition.  the only caveat to be offered here is pricing. As a functional and efficient innovation, it adds another techno-credit to the civic's long list of achievements. Honda is testing market response to the cvt initially only in the coupe, but we expect to see it become an across-the-option soon.  ever since its debut in 1973, the civic has been the car that defined its class. 1997 honda cr-v review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. That's because most sport-utilities rarely leave the pavement, let alone venture into tough terrain. The cr-v combines suv style and image with minivan usefulness. And it does so very effectively. walkaroundhonda marketing messages will pit the cr-v against toyota's spectacularly successful rav4, a strategy that's both logical and shrewd.  it's logical, because the cr-v is similar in concept and execution. Unlike most sport-utilities, it's based on passenger car components, specifically the subcompact front-drive civic line. Toyota used the same approach with the rav4, which is an amalgam of pieces from the camry, corolla and celica.  it's shrewd, because the cr-v is considerably bigger and roomier than the rav4. First, that's the way we keep telling the manufacturers we like 'em. Second, it maximizes interior volume.  like the rav4, the cr-v carries its spare tire on an external rack mounted on the tailgate. Unlike the rav4, and a lot of other external mounts, the cr-v's spare is low enough so that it doesn't interfere with vision to the rear.  the tailgate is a two-piece affair. The power window switches, for example, are located on the dashboard, to the left of the steering wheel, and they're a trifle awkward to get at when the vehicle is moving.  and the column-mounted shifter felt out of place in something that calls itself a sport-utility.  on the other hand, putting the shift lever on the steering column allowed honda to create a minivan-style pass-through between the front seats, a minivan feature that plays very well here.  we also liked the removable tray, with integrated cupholders, that flips up between the front seats. Two more cupholders slide out below the climate controls, and the interior has an abundance of storage pockets and bins, another typical honda touch.  for all its engaging detail touches, though, the most endearing trait of this interior is roominess. Lots of front legroom, which is common enough, and abundant adult-size rear legroom, which isn't.  headroom is also plentiful, fore and aft, and there's a sizeable cargo space behind the rear seats. The rear seatbacks flip and fold individually to expand cargo capacity.  and how's this for neat: the cr-v includes a picnic table that stows in the rear floor. That's typical of current honda designs, and it's one of the reasons for honda's success with ride quality.  good ride quality is a cr-v strong suit. It's supple enough to absorb the nasty little irregularities of warty pavement without excessive compromise in handling response.  the cr-v isn't quite as quick on its feet as the rav4, but it's thoroughly competent, and its steering is precise, with excellent feedback.  overall, the cr-v feels like a compact station wagon--which is essentially what it is. The torque peak is 4300 rpm, and standing start getaway is a tad sluggish.  once it builds up a head of steam, though, the cr-v is significantly quicker to 60 mph than a rav4 automatic, and the engine is reasonably quiet at most operating speeds.  however, the rav4's standard transmission is a five-speed manual, and a rav4 with a manual transmission provides livelier performance. summaryaside from the absence of a manual transmission, the cr-v is an excellent piece of work. It's much roomier than the rav4, has all sorts of nifty features and a respectable load of standard equipment.  it's not the best choice for tough off-road use, even though it has 8. 1 inches of ground clearance. But for the kind of duties that most sport-utilities perform, its all-around practicality and comfort are tops at the small end of the spectrum. assembled injapan. options as testedabs, aluminum alloy wheels. model testedcr-v. 1996 honda civic review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Thanks to a thorough and thoughtful redesign, the civic is now bigger and quieter, has a better ride, a more handsome interior, and an innovative array of technology. Despite these changes, prices are virtually the same as in 1995. It's no wonder the civic was the best-selling small car in america in last year, outselling saturn and the ford escort. walkaroundthe new civic looks bigger and more substantial, as well it should. The coupe (from $11,900) and sedan (from $12,280) models are two inches longer and three inches taller than before. It remains the pipsqueak of the family, however, with a body 10. 6 in. Shorter than the other two models, though it rides on the same wheelbase.  a new look of substance goes along with the civic's larger dimensions. Previously, the front end consisted of a pair of small headlights connected by the hood closure line. A tidy grille and bright, reflector-style headlights now dress up the nose, giving the sedan in particular the look of a junior accord.  the new coupe looks slightly less sporty, perhaps because of the greater height. The hatchback, which was designed in honda's european studio, is the most changed. Its egg-like delicacy has given way to more aggressive lines that sweep back to a steeply raked, one-piece hatch.  the trunk capacity for the sedan and coupe is 11. 9 cu. Ft., just about 1 cu. Less than the accord's. With a low liftover height and split-folding rear seats that open to the trunk, the civic sedan and coupe are flexible cargo-carriers. The hatchback is even roomier: 13. 4 cu. Of cargo space with the seats up.  we drove several civics, including a hx coupe equipped with the new continuously variable transmission (cvt), which adds about $900. The extra length has been allocated to rear legroom, making rear seating remarkably spacious for such a small car and a great improvement over the last model.  the increase in height allows more headroom and taller seats. The latter should please those who have complained about climbing out of the civic's traditionally low-slung seats.  once inside, the view is familiar to honda drivers. The dropaway hoodline and glassy greenhouse give an airy feel to the interior and provide excellent all-around visibility for the driver.  the redesigned interior is still--for the most part--an ergonomic pleasure. Edges have been rounded, creating a more soothing environment. The pod containing the radio and climate controls has been moved up on the center console, improving access. The big, clean gauges on the dashboard now feature a midnight-blue and red color scheme that is attractive yet readable. Oval-shaped warning lights freshen the look as well.  in general, the materials used throughout the interior are of better quality; the textures are more pleasant to the touch and less reflective. It's quieter inside the civic now, too, thanks to a stiffer body and more sound-deadening material. The new cupholders are placed at the base of the center console, where overhanging components limit the height of cups that may be inserted. Worse, though, is the fact that the flip-up cover for the cupholders blocks access to the optional cassette or cd player.  another gripe is that the power door locks can be activated only at the driver's door. A trio of 1. 6-liter, 16-valve, 4-cyl. Engines provides power for all the civics. The base 106-hp version is the first production gasoline engine to meet california standards for a low-emission vehicle (lev).  knowing this, we had low expectations when we got behind the wheel. These were quickly blown out the window. The high-revving little engine was zippy and quick. Paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, it was responsive and provided plenty of power. Peak power comes at 6600 rpm, which can be noisy. It's gratifying, however, to enjoy this level of performance while getting 30 miles to the gallon around town and 36 on the highway.  real environmentalists should try the 115-hp lean-burn vtec-e engine, which is available only in the hx coupe. Half the valves remain closed below 2500 rpm to improve fuel economy. With a manual transmission, this results in 39 mpg city/45 mpg highway, although there's 25% more horsepower than last year.  the second piece of earth-friendly technology available on the hx coupe is cvt, which combines the convenience of an automatic transmission with the fuel economy of a manual. The cvt-equipped coupe gets 35 mpg city/41 mpg highway. Compare those figures to the automatic-equipped dx coupe's 29 mpg city/36 mpg highway.  a cvt consists of a metal drivebelt and two pulleys. With an infinite range of shift points, the system can keep the engine at peak efficiency, improving fuel economy and reducing emissions.  for such a different technology, it's surprising how normal a cvt seems in operation. The most noticeable difference is a soft whine instead of the usual series of thunks of a gear-driven transmission. Some people may find the sound odd, but we thought its smoothness was well-suited to the honda's refined personality. The shifter has a short, light throw requiring only fingertip operation. The gates are more precise, making for fast, clean shifts.  the optional 4-speed automatic transmissions now feature honda's grade logic control, for smoother shifting when climbing or descending hills. Overall, though, the transmission has rather noticeable shift points. The civic's double-wishbone suspension is essentially unchanged, but more sophisticated shock absorber damping has transformed the ride quality.  the crisp, light handling of past civics came at the price of a somewhat harsh ride. The newly retuned suspension delivers the same bright handling, but absorbs far more road impact, an impressive accomplishment in a car this light. The civic now has the best ride in its class.  note that base models in each class have skinny, 13-in. We recommend stepping up to the 14-in. Tires.  one of the challenges to honda in this redesign was to improve the car while keeping the price low, despite the strong yen. To cut costs, honda went from 4-wheel disc brakes to discs in the front and drum brakes in the rear. Such an arrangement is more typical in this class of small, front-wheel-drive cars, and to be honest, we didn't notice a difference. Braking is still short and grippy. Abs is standard on the top-of-the-line ex sedan, a $600 option on the lx sedan and ex. summarythe honda civic is a class act. Sure, they cut some corners in the redesign. The rear disc brakes are gone. The cassette player is now optional. Abs is unavailable on some models. But the heart of the car--the powertrain, the suspension, the ergonomics--are better than ever. The civic is still a couple thousand more than comparable neons, escorts or saturns. Power Windows✔ Power Mirrors✔ Tachometer✔ Power Locks✔ AM/FM✔ Air Conditioning✔ CD Player✔ Sunroof/Moonroof
